I am looking for any information on Kaisa Karhula. She is my great grandmother. All we know is that she was born in Norway and her father's name is Peter Karhula and her mother was Kaisa Kustala. Kaisa Karhula came to the United States in 1891. She was born in 1872. Kaisa married Gustaf Pirkola in Michigan, USA in 1892 and she died in November of 1902. I am looking for any information on this family; birth certificate, baptismal records, any siblings etc...
Thank You, Julie (Pirkola) Harris

What evidence do you have that she was born in Norway. In a marriage record from Family Search she is listed as having been born in 1873 in Finland.

In the 1900 Norwegian census transcription there are about 2100 people born in Finland living in Norway. Although there are Finns living in every fylke, 1618 live in Finnmark.

Fylke Antall

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Østfold 69
Akershus 21
Oslo 58
Hedmark 6
Oppland 8
Buskerud 7
Vestfold 34
Telemark 19
Aust-Agder 25
Vest-Agder 9
Rogaland 6
Hordaland 6
Sogn og Fjordane 3
Møre og Romsdal 3
Fylke Antall
Sør-Trøndelag 13
Nord-Trøndelag 4
Nordland 34
Troms 178
Finnmark 1618

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Totalt 2121

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd assume that Finnish parents who may have had a child in Norway would likely have had it in one of the more populated places first.

Here are the individual parishes in Finnmark from the table above. To follow the stategy one could start with the most heavily populated and work down the list:

2001 Hammerfest 31
2002 Vardø 109
2003 Vadsø 309
2011 Kautokeino 19
2012 Alta 93
2013 Talvik 44
2014 Loppa 14
2015 Hasvik 4
2016 Sørøysund 5
2017 Kvalsund 11
2018 Måsøy 17
2019 Nordkapp (Kjelvik) 124
2020 Kistrand 35
2021 Karasjok 20
2022 Lebesby 37
2025 Tana 103
2027 Nesseby 132
2028 Båtsfjord 65
2029 Nord-Varanger 194
2030 Sør-Varanger 252

The only reason we think she was born in Norway is because of her death certificate. We can't find any information on her at all. I will check out these sites that people posted. Thank you, Julie Pirkola Harris

Well this Karhula is born in Jan 1873 and then confirmed in Vadsø. Her name is Grete Katherine top of the page:

Source information: Finnmark county, Bysoknet in Vadsø, Parish register copy nr. 4 (1885-1895), Confirmation records 1888, page 96.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=9970&idx_id=9970&uid=ny&idx_side=-97

Here is Gretha in the 1875 census, Karhula name is not carried:

And here is Grete with husband and son and probably her father in 1900:

In the 1875 Norwegian Census for Finnmark there are 11 Brita Kaisa's, only two born in Norway, 9 born in Finland. None born in the 1870"s. Enter Brita Kaisa, Check 1875, check Finnmark and click search.

Kaisa Karhula is for sure a "kven".

She is most likely born in Finnmark (Varanger, Tana, Vadsø...), by finnish immigrants. Her father Peter Karhula was most likely a fisherman.

Kaisa Karhula was married shortly after she arrived in Houghton Michigan and she listed Houghton Michigan on her destination when she left Norway. Do you know if she knew people in Houghton or had relatives there?
