My grandfather Albert Clarence LINDHAL (known in New Zealand since his marriage in 1908 as LINDALE) may have been born c1883 in NSW, Australia to a Nicoli (also known as Harry) LINDHAL who we believe to have been from Scandinavia, probably Norway.

So I am looking for a LINDHAL born circa 1855 who emigrated to Australia in the late 1870s or 1880s.

This missing data on my grandfather is a major brickwall in my ancestry.

I have recently taken a Y-DNA test which has my haplogroup as I12b1, which indicates ancestry from Scandinavia.

Any help in tracing the origins of my grandfather and his ancestors would be ery very much appreciated.

I believe you have to look to Sweden when the last name is Lindahl (not likely that you find Lindhal). First name could be Nicoli or Nicolay.

In the 1865 census transcription online (for free!) at the Norwegian Digitalarkivet there are 27 farms with names like Lindhal see after gard below, the list below that are the counties with those farms. Because of Norway's naming customs in the mid 1800s it might be worth your while to take a look at the inhabitants of these farms to see if any have similar first names or biographical information which matches your guy in New Zealand. Below the double line are surnames in the 1865 which begin with Lindh and the county total where the names are found.

And if you go to www.familysearch.org in the first search engine there and put in Nicholai Lindhal b. between 1850-1860 and choose each of the Scandinavian countries in succession these are the numeric results:

born Norway / 10 references
born Sweden / 88 references
born Denmark / 6 references
born Finland / 11 references
born Iceland / no references

None of these may be about your guy but this is just a place to look in the beginning.

So we are perhaps looking for a Nicolai Lindhal born in Scandinavia. Lindhal sounds Swedish.
Could Lindhal be Lindal (Lindale)?

There were Lindal farms in Norway in Haa (Hå) parish, Rogaland county in 1865 and 25 persons with lastname Lindahl.

There is a Nicolai Lindahl in Tønsberg, Vestfold. He fathered a son in 1863 though, so age doesnt fit... https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NWYR-S1Q

Here is the birth / baptism of Adolf Nicolai Berntson Lindalen, #26:

Source information: Vest-Agder county, Spangereid in Sør-Audnedal, Parish register (official) nr. A 2 (1848-1867), Birth and baptism records 1856, page 34.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=939&idx_id=939&uid=ny&idx_side=-35

The family was still on Lindalen farm in 1865
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=12&filnamn=f61029&gardpostnr=967&merk=967#ovre

Not sure but this may be the father Bernt Berntson in the 1900 census--details not exactly right --he's single and born 1829:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=20&filnamn=f01030&gardpostnr=387&merk=387#ovre

He might be alone because of this, the death of farmers wife Berte Gurine Kiddelsdtr on Lindalen #12:
Source information: Vest-Agder county, Spangereid in Sør-Audnedal, Parish register copy nr. B 2 (1853-1878), Death and burial records 1868, page 171.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=9865&idx_id=9865&uid=ny&idx_side=-172

Very likely this is Bernt And Berntson the father of Adolf Nicolai, #3:
Source information: Vest-Agder county, Spangereid in Sør-Audnedal, Parish register copy nr. B 4 (1893-1909), Death and burial records 1902, page 165.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=6202&idx_id=6202&uid=ny&idx_side=-128

Further research could rule Adolf Nicholai in or out.

Another possibility from Tønsberg:

#79, Nicolai Lindahl
Born: 25 Aug 1854
Christening: 17 Sep 1854, Tønsberg, Vestfold, Norway
Parents: shopkeeper Thorvald Hauff Wallø & Thomine Haufline, born Wallø

Census-1865

He looked like a good possibility, but unfortunately, he is an agent in Oslo in Census-1900...

Adolf Nicolai Berentsen Lindalen, confirmation 1870 Spangereid: nr 20
His parents were Berent Andreas Berentsen Lindalen, b. 1819 on Lindalen, Spangereid and Berte Gurine Kiddelsdatter, b. 1827 in Halse.
His father was born on Lindalen out of wedlock by widow Anne Nilsdatter and Berent Nilsen Gitlevåg, mentioned p 83 in bygdebok "Spangereid vest for Lenesfjorden". His father is not in 1900 census.

There are two other Bernt Andreas Berntsen in 1900 census: one who died 1902 was born 1821 on Ballestad in Lyngdal (Austad II bygdebok), one bachelor (1829-1914), born on Daland in Spangereid, (bygdebok Spangereid vest for Lenesfjorden)

Lindalen, Spangereid, is not covered by a bygdebok.
