Click on this link to read "Tending a Comfortable Wilderness" by Eric Macdonald. Includes an AMAZING amount of biographical information about both Mads Nerland and John O. Anderson and their families. The book lists twelve children for Ildri and John O. Anderson: Albert, Eda, Martin, George, Eleanor, Arthur, Hans, John, Gertrude, Gladys, Margaret, and Mable.

Their daughter Gladys gave information for this book:

Here is information from the North Manitou Cemetery website about Mads Nerland:

"Mads Nerland, native of Norway, immigrated to North Manitou Island circa 1888. He built the homestead house known as the John O. Anderson. Mads Nerland was a fisherman. He lost his life lifting nets. Mads Nerland's body was not recovered. His skiff later drifted ashore."

As was already posted, John O. Andersen is buried in North Manitou Cemetery.
