Thank you so much - the link to the list of words was just what I needed. However, I still have another problem. I tried to look at the digitalarkivet records for the birth records of Hans Gudmundsen and Kari Olsdatter listed above and haven't been able to find them. I do have the marriage record and I believe it says Kari was 24 making her born about 1799 but I couldn't read Hans age. Can you help me?
Hi Bobbi, my name is James(Jim) Skjelbreia and I guess we are related several generations back. My father's name Lars Skjelbreia who immigrated to the USA in 1945. I was born in California but moved to Norway in 1986. My grandfather's name is Anders and his father's name is Lars Kristensen. Harry Olsen Skjelbreia was the younger brother to the latter. I often pass the Skjelbreia farm and occasionally visit it. Just a few years ago the farm was sold outside the family. If you use Facebook you can find me by searching using my name. I can send some pictures of the farm and you with translations if you like. The entry "Arbeider ved Sagbrug Husmand % til Mathissen %" mean worker at the sawmill (located between the lakes Skjelbreia and Skjerva and powered by the stream between them) and Husband is sort of a foreman or caretaker of a farm or section of a farm. In this case it seen the farm was owned by Mathissen. In those census the livestock and land under cultivation was listed, by is barley, po is potatoes. I think the land measure must be hectare and 1 hectare is about 2.5 acre. A line like ku4 få6 means 4 cows and 6 sheep.
Hi Jim - you just made my day. The Olson line was always a dead end until I found this site and got some great help from the folks here. I have pictures of Harry and his brother Lars if you are interested. I would love pictures of the farm. I will look for you on Facebook and will private message you my email. Thanks so much
