For almost 5 years I have thought I had one line from Norway pretty well whipped. I had passenger info from both the Norway side and the Ellis Island arrival. I had parish records for several generations and some census data from Norway, 1910-1920 US censuses, US birth and death records, etc.

Two days ago I found the person (Louise Larson born Telemark ca 1887) still living in Kragero in 1910... 3 years after mine had married in Chicago! In spite of several rationalizations, the last two days have made me think that I have the wrong ancestry for her, but there is nothing I can find in any records that prove it either way. Death records put her birth date as Mar 1887, and the person in the 1910 census was pretty definitely born in Dec 1887.

So my main QUESTION IS: Is there any way to track down the birth/christening of a person who's father was Swedish who probably was not a member of the Norwegian church?

I have checked for baptismal records for Louise and her sibs as listed on the 1900 census. Here's the link: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=6&filnamn=f00816&gardpostnr=384#nedre

If that doesn't work, head of house is Emil Lars. born 1852.

Louise appears to leave Norway 12/15/1904 for Chicago (under name Aase Louise Larsen, age 16), and arrives Ellis Island 12/26/1904 as Louise Larsen.

Any help gratefully received.

Yes, Norwegian Lutheran parish registers often include non-Norwegians. If there were large enough populations of non believers or other Christian denominations occasionally you will find seperate dissentere registers.

Obviously for Emil his birth / baptism record will be in Sweden.

Regards the 1910 person, lots of folks travelled back and forth between North America and Norway at that time. If you click on the name the window will open and if she is a repatriated Norwegian it will contain her dates in America and last home there--valuable pieces of information. Does her birthdate in the 1910 census match what you've found in the parish registers for her? Does she have Aase as part of her name in her baptismal record?

She married in Chicago as Louise Larsen to Hans Nordness?

Not sure.
I wonder if Louise was bap. Anne Lovise in Sannidal church, born Dec. 16. and that Emil Larsen b. 1852 was Nils Emil Larsen b. 1852 and the mother Ingeborg was Ingeborg Bolette Aslaksdatter b. 1865 (she was ca 12 years younger than Emil in the 1900 census.
the 1900 census tells that Louise was born in Skafse (Skafså) in Tokke parish, Telemark.

Emils occ. in 1900 was "Veivokter" taking care of the roads and when Loiuse was born 1886 his occ. was stoneworker.
Anne Lovise is on the lower part #1

Aslak born 1889 in the 1900 census for Sannidal was bap. Aslak Emil in Skafså church June 10. born Mai. 13. 1889
Same parents as Anne Lovise, see right page #22

Her family in 1900.

Aase Louise's parents were married July 3 1884, see #8.

Aslak's family in 1865.

Hi

The Louise Larsdatter living in Kragerø in the 1910 census is NOT the same Louise as the one living 1900 in Sannikedal as I understand it:

Aase Louise Larsen who becomes Louise Larsen at Ellis Island was going to her sister Johanne Marie Larsen, most likely this Johanne Marie Larsen leaving in May 1904 from Sannikedal:

Thanks you all, and especially Einar who I think has solved it. The birth date is almost the only piece of data I have that fits with my Loise. Finally!

For the past hours I have been following the idea that Kåarto also posed on Nils Emil Larsen and Ingeborg, and had almost convinced myself.

Getting late here so will check back later. Thanks ALL!

Well, I've been following all these great leads, and now I'm too excited to go to sleep (I'm on West Coast of US).

Johanne Larsen might have married Alfred Amundson in Chicago in 1906; will do further research. Louise's 1904 Ellis Island entry form says she is going to see "brother Trygve Jacobsen" which I found 5 years ago and had always confused me. Won't worry about that any longer.

Sorry Nick but the forms are a bit confusing to follow. Louise's says to sister Johanne Marie Larsen. Trygve belongs to next person below Louise.

Thanks for all of this. I find that Aase Svendsd. was 24 yrs old and born 18 Jul 1827.

Can anyone make sense of the scribble that is Halvor's birth place in Einar's #4 above?

Most likely ment to be Kammerfoss.
Halvors baptismal record #39, his parents Thor Halvorsen and Maren Larsdatter were then living at østre Cammerfoss under Aasen.
Halvors confirmation record is #14.

- since they married in 1847 and she was 24 years old the birth should be approx 1823.
Her birth was Febr 19 1823, the baptismal record is #13 - parents Svend Halvorsen, Asdaltangen and Johanne Maria Larsdatter.

Yes, sorry I mis-typed the date... thinking of her husband's birth year. I had her birth record before I posted. I am gradually digging back several generation on these lines and will be sure to shout when I need additional help. I already have other questions brewing in my mind for this forum.

I usually try to attack in a logical fashion: Find birth, marriage, and death for Aslak Larsen; then same for his father Lars Abrahamsen; then for Lars' father Abr. Gundersen; then for Abe's father Gunder Abrahamsen (born ca 1770), until I run out of options. Keeping notes in my online file all the while to ease going back and finding the same data for their spouses.

So I will make a note of the excellent leads on Halvor's birth and his parents, and probably get to that family in a couple of days. (I just clicked your link #39 and amazed that you were able to decipher "øsytre Cammerfoss under Aasen"... I guess a good familiarity with the language helps.)

Thanks! Nick
