Immigration is when you arrive in a new country. Immigration year was one of the questions in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 US censuses. Check those censuses for what info was given. If you have ancestry.com that should be fairly easy.

Emigration is when you leave the old country. Norway could only have emigration records of people leaving. Norway had a good number of different ports for persons to leave from. Where a person lived before they emigrated might let you better guess which port they left from.

Here is Oluf and Gunbjor in the 1900 census. Gunbjor is listed as born June 1865 and came to US in 1882:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M938-ZDQ

head Oluf Gunderson M 32 Wisconsin
wife Gunbjor Gunderson F 35 Norway
daughter Marie Gunderson F 8 Minnesota
daughter Anna Gunderson F 7 Minnesota
daughter Josephine Gunderson F 6 Minnesota
daughter Inga Gunderson F 4 Minnesota
daughter Olivia Gunderson F 2 Minnesota

This obituary index notice was found in the database at pchs.org (Pennington County Historical Society). Don't know if its your gal or not but was published in their covered area. Gazette is the name of the newspaper--don't know where it was published, it is the Red Lake Falls Gazette, the date is the publication date of the paper, not necessarily when this person died:

Gunderson Olaf Mrs. 27-Mar-1902 Gazette

Here is the family in the 1895 Minnesota State census. Her name is given as Gunvor. Red Lake county was created out of Polk County in 1896:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MQ6J-XLF

Here is Olaf and Gun--- marriage in MOMS, her name is given as Julia Olson:
POLK E/48 8/12/1891 GUNDERSON, OLEF OLSON, JULIA

Possibly Julia Olson age 20 living in Crookston, Polk County, Minnesota in 1885:

Based on the information in the 1900 census here are a couple of possible Gunbjør:

Gunbjør Asbjørnsd b abt 1865 Kinsarvik

This is not Gunbjør's leaving in 1882 but her older sister Ingeborg #96:

Those two Gunbjørgs are married in Norway in 1900 census:
Gunbjørg Asbjørnsdatter - Gunbjørg Aslaksdatter

Also in Norway 1900: Gunvor Salvesdatter (Kile), born 1862 (she never had the names Julie or Drangsholt)

Alternative spellings: Gunbjørg/Gunbjør/Gundbjørg/Gunnbjørg/Gumbjør

Which source brings in the surname Drangsholt?

A lot of information here, so will check it all out. Gunvor did die, after the birth of her last child, so it'll be great to have the obituary. Olaf Gunderson then went to Saskatchewan, Canada and later married my great aunt Inga Kyllingstad-Clausen. Thanks again for the help. A great site for information, from Norway.

The site is Minnesota Official Marriages
www.mncounty.com

It's a site for the information the actual certificate would have to be ordered with information at the site. You'd probably want to do that just to make sure that this is your Olaf.

Did have an opportunity today to look at the database you mentioned on Ancestry. Actually there are 3 with approximately the same information: Nielsen Family Tree, Mom'smysterioustree, Pederson-Petterson Christianson Wold Olson Jensdatter Nord. The initial problem I had about Salve Nielsen the father is no longer an issue as the databases which give Gunvor's parents list his birth year as 1824, a much more plausible parental birthyear for someone born in 1863,1864,1865.

Perhaps the people who owned the databases have some other compelling document or legitimate search history which really ties your gal to a Drangsolt or the Salve Nielsen /Anne Olsdatter family (maybe even a different one entirely) all I know is I haven't seen it yet. Hopefully they'll share.

The website with ordering information for the obit for Mrs. Olaf Gunderson is www.pchs.org

Thank you for those sites They could come in handy for other relatives too. Will be sending all the information to the great granddaughter tonight.
Does it say the name of the boat Gunvor came across over? I looked on the Ellis Island site and didn't find her name there.
Does the family information go back further, in Norway or is the information given me, the last of it? Just wondering.
Thanks again,
Diane

Ellis Island didn't open until 1892, so would not have been her point of entry.

The parish register listings of people leaving the parish typically don't have have anything more than a place where the person is travelling to. The police emigration lists will sometimes say the person's ultimate destination. The names of ships, either a feeder or an trans-Atlantic vessel are often in the police emigration lists, or the name of the shipping line.

I looked in Kristiansand and Oslo and Bergen but I can't say that I'm confident that I saw--perhaps some of the forumites have found her?
