An acquaintance asked for help in finding ancestors in Norway before the family members immigrated to the US. He writes:
"I would like to ask for assistance with Ragnhild Andersdatter Bjorkerud, b 1750 who m. Helge Nilson Jellum in 1774. She d. in 1810 in Jellum, Eggedal. I am interested in learning more about her mother, Guri Olsdtr Bjorkerud, b 1720, d. 1754 Bjorkrud. Is it possible to learn who Guri’s parents were?"

I have found Ragnhild and Helge and family in the 1801 census http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01058273003919

But I have searched the church records for Sigdal, Buskerud, without success. The records from the mid 1700s for Sigdal/Eggedal seem to be organized chronologically, but I have found only a few christening records for girls. Link to church records: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?ls=1&idx_id=8501

Does anyone have experience with the Sigdal records for this period and know where the girls are listed?

The baptismal pages (at least 1770s-1790s era) are divided into 3 columns. On the left is Holmen which is apparently the main Sigdal church, Krydshered which is Krødsherad and the far right is Eggedal. Girls and boys are intermixed. Dates on the pages are intermixed as well. More baptismal action in Holmen means the registers run through paper faster than Eggedal.

Bjørkerud is in Krødsherad, Jellum in Eggedal.

On the Jellum pages in the Sigdal og Eggedal III book it says that Nils Larsen on Jellum sold one half of Jellum to his son Lars in 1760 and the other half to him in 1775. Nils died in 1777. My Norwegian isn't good enough to understand all the details but paraphrasing Lars Nilsen sold to his brother Helge first in 1778 and then another part Lars purchased in 1790 he sold to Helge in 1792.

In the biographical part on Helge it says that Helge was born about 1750, and had Bjørkerud in Krødsherad until he bought Jellum

Hope this helps

Thanks so much! I found that there are a number of farms in Sigdal, Hole and Krødsherred named Bjørkerud, with various spellings. But the one in Krødsherred is probably the likely one. I'll pass this on to the descendant. I wonder if you could send me the link to the appropriate page, and I can study the text to see if more can be learned. I did see the three column set-up, but on the pages I was looking at there was not a three column division for the christenings. These were always on the lefthand page, and the righthand page was devoted to burials, engagements and weddings. As for the girls mentioned, all the ones (only 2-4) I found mixed in with the boys seemed to be illegitimate!

If you are referring to the Sigdal Eggedal bygdebøker, as far as I know, they are not online. The author is Andreas Mørch. You'd for sure want both Volume (Bind ) II and Volume (Bind ) III. Volume 3 has an every male farm owner name index, alphabetical by first name, then patronymic, then farm. You could try for ILL.

OK. I thought we were talking about the church records. But I am grateful that you had the bygdebøker and could share the information with me. I can borrow the books from the library and check the information there.

If Guro is your goal it might be best to look for her marriage or confirmation as the baptisms for Sigdal only seem to go to 1722....

I had a few minutes with the Krødsherad books the other day and info on Guri under Bjørkerud was very limited. It did say that Ragnhild was her only child and it gave a birthdate for Ragnhild of 1752. There was an Ole Engebretson mentioned in the paragraph concerning the time just before Guri's husband came there but my Norwegian not good enough to figure what the reference was. Anders married a 2nd time and had only one daughter with the second wife as well.

Thanks! I haven't gotten to the state archives yet to check the sources, but I will check the bygdebøker as soon as I can. I'm sure Galen will appreciate the information on Guri.

I have now borrowed the bygdebøker for Eggedal and Sigdal. In case other people are looking for this information, I will give a summary here on Bjørkerud, from Andreas Mørch, Krødsherad, vol. I, Gard og slekt, pp. 271-2 and p. 300.
It is uncertain when Bjørkerud farm was cleared and cultivated, but in 1605 it is mentioned as a royal holding under the farm Bjøre. the first owner mentioned is Jon Berg, called Jon Bjøre in 1674, when he was given concession. There were a number of different owners up to 1762, when Anders Gunnarsen Grimeli took it over for 400 riksdaler. In a document from 1765, Anders and his wife Guri are described as so destitute and in debt that they were unable to pay a required surtax, and they were therefore exempted from paying it. Anders must have been one of the more prominent farmers in the district, as in 1766 he was a "lagrettemann", a combined juror in trials and official who witnessed the signing of documents and officiated in taxation matters. Anders Gunnarsen Grimeli (ca. 1718-73) was married (1) to Guri Olsdotter. Their daughter was Ragnhild, b. 1752, who married Helge Nilsen Jellum from Eggedal. No other children are mentioned, and Guri had died by 1754, when her inheritance was passed on. Anders married (2) Kari Østensdotter Jare (Eggedal), with whom he also had only one daughter named Ingebjørg, b. 1759. Anders must have done better than expected at Bjørkerud, as he left 493 riksdaler to be divided between Ragnhild and Ingebjørg. Following Anders' death, Ragnhild and Helge took over the farm, but they soon moved to Jellum, where Helge was from, and Bjørkerud passed to other owners.
The parents of Anders Gunnarsen Grimeli Bjørkerud were Gunnar Andersen Bjørkerud, b. ca. 1680, and Barbru Andersdotter. They lived at Grimelibråtan, a tenant farm under Bjøre farm.Gunnar later cleared Gunnarplassen at Bjøre and ran it from 1727. His son Anders mentioned above also ran it for a time before he moved to Eggedal. Gunnar and Barbru had seven children: Narve, married to Johanne Johannesdotter from vestre Grimeli, nordre Råen; Knut; Ivar (ca. 1715-1801, confirmed Holmen Church in 1738), married first to an unnamed wife who died in 1792, then to the widow Åse Kittelsdotter; Anders (see above); Gjertrud, married to Knut Fosslia; Mari, b. 1723 and mentioned as a servant in 1744; and Kjersti, b. 1725 and mentioned as a servant in 1744.

I continue with the family of Helge Nilsen Jellum, from Andreas Mørch, Sigdal og Eggedal, vol. III, Gard og slekt, pp. 1032-5.
Most probably, Jellum was the original farm in a large area. Around 1600 it is mentioned in the tax lists under the names Gylden, Gyllem, Gielunn. Knut Jellum paid his war tax in 1614, and he was one of the group of farmers called odelsbønder in 1617. He was about 90 in 1645, when his son Anders sued him over some property rights. Anders Knutsen had taken over the farm in the 1630s, and he was the sheriff in 1658. Anders Knutsen (ca. 1601-74) married Ingebjørg Steinarsdotter Skåla. Known children are: Gudbrand, b. ca. 1639; Nils (see below); Tora, married to Reidar Halvorsen Sole, in Olmlia; Live, married (1) to Hans Andersen Kvie in Flå and (2) Klemet Gutormsen nedre Trommald; Elling, who lived at nedre Bøle from 1659. The oldest son, Gudbrand, lived at Jellum for a time, but then moved to Teige. His brother Nils bought out his sisters and owned the farm from 1679. Nils must have been fair to his sisters, as he later complained that his father-in-law had favored his sons over his daughters. Nils Andersen (ca. 1627-1705) married Guro Narvesdotter Eikje (d. before 1698). Their children were: Lars (see below); Ingebjørg, married to Anders Gutormsen Strand; Gunhild, married to Eivind Gunbjørnsen Teige, in Åsen; Kirsti, married to Engebret Andersen Grønhovd; Ingebjørg, b. ca. 1681 and married to Halvor Helgesen Medalen; Jøran, b. ca. 1684 and without descendants. Nils Andersen was sheriff in Eggedal from 1696.
Lars Nilsen (ca. 1680-1721) was married to Gunhild Helgesdotter (ca. 1680-1753). Their children were Kjersti, b. ca. 1710, married 1736 to Nils Engebretsen Tjernås; Nils (see below); Jøran, b. ca. 1717 and married to Jakob Aslesen Berg, nordre Teige. After Lars died, Gunhild married Steinar Gunnarsen in 1724, but they had no children, and Steinar died in 1729. Widow Gunhild had the farm till 1739, when it was handed down.
Nils Larsen (ca. 1714-77) married Berte or Berit Reidarsdotter Skare (ca. 1711-75) Their children were: Lars, b. 1737, married 1767 to Astrid Larsdotter Berget; Reidar (1739-63); Ingebjørg, b. 1740, married 1767 to Hans Olsen Skadeland, then to Anders Pedersen; Kjersti, b. 1743; Kristi, b. 1746, married 1774 to Gunbjørn Olsen Åsen; Helge (see below); Gunhild, married 1771 to Knut Engebretsen Kolsrud in Flå; Knut, b. 1755, married 1783 to Ingrid Sebjørnsdotter Kleiv in øvre Skåla. In 1760 Nils and Berte transferred half of the farm to their son Lars. Lars sold the entire farm to his brother Helge in 1778, but he later bought back the southern half in 1790. He resold it to Helge in 1792.
Helge Nilsen (ca. 1750-1824) married Ragnhild Andersdotter Bjørkerud (ca. 1752-1810). They lived at Bjørkerud (see my other post on this farm) till they bought Jellum. Children: Berte (1774-83); Anders (ca. 1775-1806); Ingebjørg, b. 1778, married 1797 to Jakob Jonsen Teige; Kari (1781-1802); Gunhild (1783-1829), childless; Nils, b. 1788, married 1810 to Guri Steingrimsdotter Tangen in Nilshusa; Reidar (1792-1800); Ole, b. 1795, married 1817 to Ingeborg Stenersdotter Kleiv. Helge and Ragnhild gave the northern half of Jellum to their daughter Ingebjørg and husband Jakob Jonsen Teige in 1796, and the farm was divided.
Jellum, nordre
Jakob Jonsen (1774-1847) and Ingebjørg Helgesdotter (1778-1806) had: Berit, b. 1798, married 1830 to Fingar Olsen Åsland; Jon (see below); Ragnhild, b. 1805, married 1827 to Bjørn Gunbjørnsen øvre Haugen. After Ingebjørg died, Jakob married his widowed neighbor, Anne Nilsdotter Jellum.
Jon Jakobsen (1801- married Kari Stenersdotter Kleiv (1798- Children: Ingeborg, b. 1823, immigrated to America 1852; Jakob (1825-25); Sigrid, b. 1826; Beret (1827-9); Jakob, b. 1831, immigrated to America 1852; Kristi, b. 1832; Ragnhild, b. 1835, married in America to Anders Skare; Stener (1837-8); Stener, b. 1842. Jon and Kari immigrated with their children Berit, Kristi and Ragnhild in 1857.

I came across this blog by accident the other day. I started to read it and it turned out that it was about my family. Helge Nilsen Jellum is my 7x grandfather. I’m a descendant of his son Nils. What I would like to know more about are these items.
We have Nils birth date as 20 Mar 1788 in Eggedal. Is this the correct birth date and place or do you have a different birth date and place?
Nils married Guri Stengrimsdotter Tangen according to your entry in the blog. You have her birth as 1792-1800. Some family trees have her birth as 13 May 1792 in Eggedal. Yet the 1885 Minnesota State Census shows a Guri Jellum living with her son Stengrim Nilsen Jellum with a birth date of 1786. We don’t have any other Guri in that generation or about that age in the family. So we assume that Guri is Guri Stengrimsdotter. There some mistakes with this census so the date could be wrong and State Census don’t show relationship to the head of household as the Federal Census does. Some in our family think she died in Norway in 1865. Is there a death record or immigration record in Norway for her? Can you confirm what her birth date was?
Can you tell me how many children Nils and Guri had. We know of two children and they were Helge, my Great Great Great Grandfather and his brother Stengrim.
Our records show that Helge Nilsen Jellum married Anna Karine Larsdatter Åsen in 1839. Do you have a better date and location for this marriage? Also I’ve seen middle name spelled several ways. Is this the correct spelling?
We’re not sure when or where she died. Some think she died in Norway, on the passage to the US or in the US. We just don’t know. We just don't know when or where she died. There is some indication that she died about 1852.
According to Helge's son Nils's obituary and two US Censuses, Helge and his family immigrated to the US in 1851. But according to other sources Helge and his family, Stengrim and his family, and other Jellum family members came to the US in 1852 by way of Quebec. Canada wasn’t keeping track of passenger list at that time so we can’t track them through any Canadian records. Are there any records in Norway that might show when these family members left. According to the book “A Letter Written Back to Norway” Stengrim and his family left Drammen on May 15th 1852. They arrived at Quebec on July 2nd 1852. They left Quebec on July 5th 1852. Traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and then on to Jefferson Prairie, Wisconsin. It’s also known that Helge and family made it to Jefferson Prairie because Helge married his second wife there.
According to your blog entry on page 4 Jon Jakobsen’s daughter Ingeborg and his son Jakob immigrated to the US in 1852. Did they immigrate with the rest of the family?
A question that is puzzling the family is why Helge used the farm name of Hefta and not Jellum. Stengrim used the farm name of Jellum. I've found Hefta on a map, but it's hard to tell if it's a farm or a community. Can you tell me more about Hefta?
In 1858 Helge lived in Silver Lake Township, Worth County, Iowa. There was another Hefta family living there, but we've been unable to establish any relationship to them. The father of that Hefta family was Halvar O. H Hefta and he was born 1816. Do you have any information about him?
In the blog you state that the Jellum farm was split and the northern part was given to Helge’s and Ragnhild’s daughter Ingebjørg and her husband. What happened to the other part of the Jellum farm? We’re trying to figure out again why Helge was using the last name of Hefta and reasons that he and Stengrim immigrated.
I've asked a lot of questions, any answers would be of great help.

Russell -
You've stated "Some family trees have her birth as 13 May 1792 in Eggedal. (Guri Stengrimsdtr).

The parish church records of Eggedal parish in Sigdal district, Buskerud, Norway show that 13 May 1792 was the date she was baptised. See the third column across the pages linked below - the heading shows you those are the records for Eggedal. Guri's baptismal record is listed in that column (her given name is underlined.)
Guri's baptism record.

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

She appears in the 1801 Norwegian census still living on the farm where she was born -

An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
Clicking on "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] will bring up another screen and listing to choose from. Choose "Lesa skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Read the digitised parish records" [English version].
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records.
