Hi, I'm looking for information for my grandmother on any information about her mother and family. Her name was Laura Sofie Lindseth born in Rusland in 1895 according to the 1910 census but her baptism in Vadso shows 3/29/1897. Laura Sofie Lindseth mothers name is to hard to read and her fathers name was Karl Gustav Lindseth born 1875 in Vadso to Jakob Steng Lindseth born 1828 in Sundalen. Karl Had sister named Thora E Lindseth born 1866 in Vadso who later married Adalbert Hanssen born 1861. Karl Gustav Lindseth brothers were Harrald Lindseth born 1872 and olaf nikolai Lindseth born 1864. My GG Laura Lindseth came to the united states in 1917 and had a child shortly after who died around the age of two everyone is unsure of name. My grandmother never met any one from her mothers side (Laura Lindseth) so its all a mystery and I have been running in circles for months. Sorry for such a long post. If any one could help I would be very thankful. |

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMITROND&personpostnr=170229&merk=170229

A Laura S.G. Lindseth married a Peter Terkelsen in Kings County New York: Lindseth Laura S G Jul 30 1918 8812 Kings L532
There are 2 other Lindseth female marriages listed at the Italian Gen Group web site.
In the New York City death index also at the Italian Gen Group site, no Lindseth babies found but there is this:

You mentioned the 1910 census. Here she is living with her father, grandfather, aunt & uncle and first cousins. Her birthdate here is 3 Mar 1895. Apparently was not living with her father in 1900:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01036985000258
Here are her father and his parents in the 1900 census: http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f02003&personpostnr=1016&merk=1016
Karl Gustav's birth / baptism, #59: Source information: Finnmark county, Bysoknet in Vadsø, Parish register copy nr. 2 (1875-1884), Birth and baptism records 1876, page 11. Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=9796&idx_id=9796&uid=ny&idx_side=-10
The S in his father's name is short for Stengrimsen, meaning his father is a Stengrim.
Laura's baptism (which you already found) #15: Source information: Finnmark county, Bysoknet in Vadsø, Parish register (official) nr. 7 (1896-1916), Birth and baptism records 1899, page 19. Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=88&idx_id=88&uid=ny&idx_side=-23
Her mother's name is Alma Otilia Jul and born in Vacdgulia (?). Her parents weren't married at the time she was born. She was baptized at home and for four years was between Vadso and Vacdgulia. See Einar's comment below for significance of remark. |

I think Laura Sofie's birth date given in the parish record should be trusted, it is March 29 1897, she was baptized at home by the mothers stepfather Erik Ingilæ, Vaidaguba. The mothers mother Johanna Ovidie Ingilæ was one of the witnesses. Laura Sofie's mother, Alma Otilie Jul, had been in Vardø 4 years.

Bapt. record for Thora Hanssen, the wife of Adalbert Hanssen in the 1910 census, i.e. Laura Sofie's aunt and Karl Gustav's sister, see #2 Thora Elise.

wow this is amazing! Thank you for all your help. I really appreciate this. My grandmother is so excited that things are coming together. Leif Terkelsen was my grandmothers half brother who had passed away. We are going to look into cemeteries in Kings County for his burial. Is there a way to access death records in 1897? My grandmother was told that her grandmother alma died while giving birth to Laura sofie. |

Looked at the deaths / funerals in Vadsø bysoknet for 1897 and Alma is not listed--at least I didn't see her. Laura is listed as born in Russia in the 1910 census, and her Ellis Island arrival. The town looked like Vacdgulia, Vardogub, or Vaidgulia. It's possible that those are Russian variants of Vadsø or Vardo or some other place entirely--just not sure.
You might want to let your fingers do the walking for Leif's burial:
www.findagrave.com
or www.usgenweb.com, select New York and then select Kings County. There are lots of cemetery transcriptions here.
Otherwise buy his death certificate and the disposal of his body is likely to be listed on it. |

Briefest of info in Wikipedia on Vayda guba, in Murmansk region of Russia, active settling push in 1860s, located on the very western most point of a penninsula in the very western most part of Murmansk. So both Laura and her mother Alma were born there. Alma's birthyear was given as 1872. If Laura was born there and baptized in Vadsø, perhaps Alma was also? |

View of Vaida Guba bay with the Barents Sea in the background, link
It seems to have been Norwegians there in the 17th and 18th century, I have seen a photos of a Norwegian tombstone and a vell there from the 1700s
A stamp and two photos of the characteristic light house at Vaida Guba, link
