It might be this Gunder Johnsen who is shown as born in Sigdal, Buskerud, Norway on 23 July 1860 -
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N481-MPT

You'll need more info to verify -- when did your Gunder leave Norway? where did he settle after he emigrated? do you have names and vital dates for any other family members?

If Gunder appears with his family in Clearwater Co. MN for the 1905 MN census and 1910 US census then he is probably the Gunder above born in Sigdal.

If Gunder Johnsen was married to Maren Eriksdatter they both emigrated in 1900.
The one from Sigdal is your Gunder then.

Kimberly -- You have to have more information about 'John Torgerson' before you can research him. His son Gunder with a birthdate and both parents names was the best possible chance to find out the WHERE in Norway the family was from.

The 1865 Norwegian census shows over 100 men who could match the meager information you had about 'John Torgerson' -- but Gunder was luckily found using the free databases of familysearch.org -- his birth year and parents names reinforcing the search.

So now you are interested in 'John Torgerson' known to be married to woman with a name like Kristi or Christine and living in Sigdal, Buskerud when he had a son named Gunder (or similar variation).
The 1865 census shows the family living in Sigdal (the date for Gunder is wrong but censuses anywhere are prone to such simple errors).

http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0621&kenr=003&bnr=0058&lnr=000

So now you know WHERE in Norway to research and at least approximately when John Torgersen was born and where. You know he wasn't a land owner and you have names and dates of other children he had that can be researched and added to your stores of family information.

The detail available in the extensive parish church records is a marvelous gift from Norway. The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005. To be able to use the parish records you must first know WHERE in Norway you want to search for this documentation.

The Digitalarkivet web site - (http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar)
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
When you click on that link another page will present a short list of choices - choose "Read the digitized parish registers"[English version]/"Lesa skanna kykrebøker" [Norwegian version].
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
(http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html)

Are you already familiar with the other resources in Norway and online about researching your Norwegian ancestors?

An example of using the Sigdal parish church records to find actual documentation about a member of that family --

The youngest child shown in the 1865 census was the daughter, Thora, born circa 1865 in Sigdal.
The actual church record of her birth and baptism lists her birth as 21 April 1865, parents Jon Torgersen and Christi Nielsdatter living on a Sigdal farm I cannot read the name of.
You've now seen additional name spelling variations and can add them to your collection of 'names of interest'. Spelling was NOT an exact science and if it sounded the same - it probably was the same. Also make note that European date formats are recorded in DD/MM/YYYY order -- don't use the American date format.

I hope you have quick success in using the parish records yourself and ENJOY!

You have the names of Gunder Johnsens 10 children.

Was Gunder Johnsen married to Marie born Eriksdatter ? (from Krødsherad)
Three of the oldest childen were;
Elen b. 1889, Gunhild b. 1891 and Kristian b. 1892 ?
This family em from Bø-eiet in Sigdal August 15. 1900.
If this info correspond with yours its the right Gunder Johnsen mentioed above.

Kåre Torgersen.

Not a relative but my lastname comes from Torger Torkildsen 1854-1916 in Sigdal

Thank you everyone for the information. I have been looking under the last name Johnson and not Johnsen,( I guess I am new at doing this) I just had found under Family Search website a marriage between Gunder Johnsen and Marie Eriksdatter, marriage was 4/15/1883, Father for Gunder was John Torgerson and Marie's father is Erik Knudsen. Marriage took place in Sigdal, Buskerud, Norway.
My great grandfather was born in Norway his name was John Gunder Johnson born in 1885, there was a Christian born 1892, I don't see a Elen or a Gunhild though, I have the 1910 census and it lists Christ, Martin, Ragna, Gathred born all before 1900.

Your John was born Nov. 29. 1884, bap. Johan Gunnarsen Feb. 2. 1885.
His father was now rec. as "Inderst" Gunnar Jonsen Ramstad-eie, a sub farm under Ramstad, #8

"Inderst" means they lived on the farm and that one of them was related to the owners.

Spelling names was never an exact science. Expect variations - some slight, others quite surprising. Use database search wildcards whenever you can and never ask the computer to do EXACT matches only.
Add on the 'Americanization' of names that emigrants often chose and you'll have quite a collection of names and spellings before you finish. You can learn to laugh and enjoy the variations.

I saw that familysearch record for Gunder's marriage in Sigdal too and feel fairly sure it is your guy. Glad you found it. Every success will give you increased confidence. With an exact date it should be pretty easy for you find the original marriage record in the Sigdal parish books online. You can save a copy of the record in jpg or pdf format and/or print it to paper for your records.

You'll also want to learn to use the many databases of the Digitalarkivet website. For example the emigrant protocols (registers) kept at most of the Norwegian ports of departure after the mid-1860s.
Here's Gunder's wife and children leaving through the port of Oslo on or about 23 Aug 1900 --
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=9&filnamn=EMIOSLO&gardpostnr=129136&sokefelt=skjul

It's interesting that they are listed with a last residence as Krødsherred rather than Sigdal. A quick map of Buskerud informs me that Sigdal and Krødshered districts are right next to each other. The family could easily have moved there at some time.

The Gunder Johnson you are looking for is my great Grandpa. Unfortunately I know nothing about his parents. I would love any information that you may have. Gunder had a son named Fred, my grandpa, and Fred had a son named Gerhard. My dad. Gunder and his wife Mary are buried here in Clearwater county. I would love to hear from you.
