looking for information or relatives for the family of above. i do know from the digitalarkvet for 1875-telling for 1235 voss numbers 4298 to 4305 8 are my grandfathers relatives he is number4300 3, all i know is that his dad was lars and his mom was karolina . i would love to go back on to their parents and then their parents. i also would like to know more on his and gudves family and maybe where i could copy the childrens birth baptism etc etc in fact all of their records but i need to be directed to the right area. can anyone help, and one question is was he on the rokne farm #1 , i think i was told that gudves sister married to knute rokne but was told no.
any one please i need your help especially if i have long lost relatives there?

There are many Rokne farms.
Your finding in the 1875 census for Store Rokne (Big/Large Rokne), farm nr 4/22.
Lars Steffensen Rokne born Dec. 12. 1835 on Store Rokne #12 farm 21; Parents Steffen Arnfindsen Rokne born 1797 takes over the farm 1818 and married 1829 Brita Larsdatter from farm Tveito. 3 children; Arnfinn 1830, Guro 1833 and your Lars 1835, he married 1859 Karolina Mikkelsdatter Rokne born 1835 in Bergen town.
Brita Larsdatter died 1859 and Steffen Arnfinnsen 1879.
Voss 1875
Oldest son Arnfinn Steffensen 1830 takes over his fathers farm Store Rokne (farm 21) in 1856 for 500 Daler, link
3 children and a servant maid Ingeborg and his father Steffen Arnfinnsen, (e) widower, occ. "Fĝderaadsmand" Legal contract on free supplies on the farm as long as he lived.

Steffen Arnfinnsen 1797, his parents; Arnfinn Knutsen Rokne b. 1762 and Guro Klasdatter Grimastad.
Arnfinn recieved deed (property) in 1782 and 1810 on Rokne and married Guro Klasdr. 1786.
They got 4 children; Klas 1793, Steffen 1797 mentioned above, Isak 1801 and Mass 1807.
Arnfinn Knutsen Rokne died 1811 and Guro married 2. time 1812 Olav Persen Rokne b. 1777 from farm Vetle Rokne nr 3.
Probate after Arnfinn; net value 1200 Daler and gross value 2068 Daler.
Klas recieved Rokne farm nr 5 and Steffen farm nr 4.
Isak b. 1801, master fiddler on Harding fele em. to USA 1845.

Barbara - You can get copies of the original Voss (district within Hordaland, Norway) church record entries for births/baptisms/confirmations/marriages/deaths/etc from the online scanned images of those records.
The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebĝker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
Clicking on "Skanna kyrkjebĝker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] will bring up another screen and listing to choose from. Choose "Lesa skanna kyrkjebĝker" [Norwegian version]/"Read the digitised parish records" [English version].
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmċl (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].
Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -

For the protection of privacy, there are limits for how recent church records can be published:
- Birth and baptism records up to and including 1929
- Confirmation records up to and including 1934
- Marriage and banns records - no limits
- Civil marriage up to and including 1950
- Death, burial and stillbirth records up to and including 1930
- Migration records - no limits
- Joins and leavings of the State Church up to and including 1950
- Records about dissenters up to and including 1950
If you cross these limits while browsing a register or a list, you will not see the digitised image, but a message informing you that the image cannot be displayed.
When you've studied and used the instructions and been able to find a scanned page on the Digitalarkivet that you'd like to capture as a URL to share with someone else or save for your family history documentation - just copying the URL that your browser shows will NOT provide a working link for longer than about 1/2 an hour -- it only works very temporarily.
Working direct links to the scanned images on the Digitalarkivet can be copied and pasted from the desired page from a display option available. At the top of the scanned image page is an option labeled "Bildeinformasjon:" [Norwegian version]/"Image Information"[English version] which is by default set to "Ingen" [Norwegian version]/"None" [English version]. Change that and magic is available. Of the three options I like "Ĝverst" [Norwegian version]/"On top" [English version] because it puts the additional information across the top of the page and is usually easier for me to see.
The first line "Kildeinformasjon:" [Norwegian version]/"Source information" [English version] is a really nice summary of the source of the information and is wonderful to have for making detailed source citations, footnotes, etc.
The second line "Permanent sidelenke:" [Norwegian version]/"Permanent pagelink" [English version] is the best line to capture if you want to save the exact URL location or share the actual scanned image and the source information. It allows the full capabilities for zooming in and out to best view the image and informs the recipient of the exact location, book and other details to be able to find WHERE you found the information.
The third line "Permanent bildelenke:" [Norwegian version]/"Permanent imagelink" [English version] is the best used to print a copy of the image or to save a copy of the image in a jpg format computer file. This line does NOT also capture the source information and therefore is NOT the best line to copy to share online when requesting help or assistance in deciphering the image found.

The famous football coach Knute Rokne came to the US as a child and married in the US. Information about his wife would be better looked for in American sources. Wikepedia seems to have a good summary of info about him. |

The famous Knut Rokne, bap. Knut Larsen Rokne March 4. 1888.
His parents; Smith and wagon maker Lars Knutsen Rokne 1858-1912 and Martha Pedersdatter 1859-1944, #25
Lars Knutsens parents; Black smith Knut Knudsen Rokne b. 1824 and Martha Andersdatter.
Black smith Knut Knutsen Roknes father was Knut Larsen Rokne, he bought farm nr 4 Vetle Rokne (Little Rokne) in 1824 for 700 Daler and was married two times, 1.1817 to Kirsti Olsdatter Saude and 2. time in 1846 to widow Brita Andersdatter Vangen.
7 children with Kirsti and 3 children with Brita.
Lars, Ingebjĝrg 1820, Olav (to America), Knut 1824, Brita 1828, Ivar 1831 (to America), Lars 1836, Johannes 1848, Olav 1850 and Knut 1855 (died 1875)
Knut was a mastersmith and handyman and died 1873, 86 years old.
He was mobilized in the army 1813 for the 1814 war against Sweden.
1892 "Vognfabrikant" Wagon manufacturer Lars Knutsen Rokne 1858-1912 went to Chicago where he partisipated in Chicago 1893 with a two weels wagon and was awarded. He decided to stay in America and send for his family 1893, #44-48

I believe Knut Rokne married in Sandusky Ohio on July 14. 1914 Bonnie Gwendoline Hines 1891-1956.
Cant find any connection between these two families in Voss so fare, but there are som many names to check out.

Scroll down, the first photo shows Vetle Rokne 1931 and the next is Store Rokne 1931, your ancestors home.

wow you did awesome very over whelmed with what you have told me.but it is very confusing to understand.i wish i was sitting next to you and getting your knowledge of you you have sent me,
but by any chance would you know if i would still have relatives over there?i do have some mementos that my grandmothers family had of hers when she passed away at an early age of 31.
i do have a lady here in minnesota by the name of Jean Marthaler and a lady from canada Vivian Gullickson White whose families also came from Voss area.so i am hoping they can help.
to you that helped me from the bottom of my heart i thank you so very much, this is so very precious to me that it really does bring tears to my eyes, for that you are my heros.
now i have to ask about Gudves family i think she was from the gerald farm. do you know anything on them?

Don't get confused. Don't get sidetracked. Keep your research well organized and study new topics carefully until you understand them. Then practice and practice.
Jean Marthaler and Vivian White are both knowledgable and would probably be able to give you advise in your research. I don't know if either of them is willing to do the work for you.
I have friends whose ancestors were from the Voss area and they met living relatives in that area when on a trip to Norway. First my friends researched all that was possible from their home in the US and resources online and through the LDS family history library collection so that they KNEW who their ancestors were, where they lived, who they married, and children they had. They could definitely point to known past residents of the area and show exactly how they were related to them. They kept in mind that relatives still living in the Voss area might have no interest in family history and might not have any information about the early family history but MIGHT recognize the more modern names of common great-grandparents, etc.
They had a very enjoyable trip and the story of the family 'get-together' even made a Norwegian newspaper or two.
There are privacy limits on information more current so finding living relatives is more difficult. For the protection of privacy, there are limits for how recent church records can be published:

I understand it can feels like meeting a brickwall when you for the first time look into Norwegian church books, censuses and on top of that bad English
Follow Hopkins recommendations and you will find it much easier than expected.
I found a Gudve Johnsdatter b. 1800 married 1825 to Olav/Ole Olavesen/Olsen Store Rokne born on one of the other frams on Store Rokne, I will look into her ancestors and post it here.

Gudve Jonsdatter born 1800 on Store Rokne married 1825 Ole Olsen Rokne. Soldier in the 1814 war against Sweden.
Ole died 1847 and Gudve 1876.
3 children;
- Erik Olsen Rokne to Amerika
- Nils Olsen Rokne 1828 married 1847 Anna Oddsdatter and recieved Deed (property) on the farm from his father. Nils sold the farm to his sister Anna brother in law Lars Knutsen and em. to America.
A son Ole changed name in the US to Oliver Rockney Nelson. He married 1880 a girl from Skien, Telemark, Norway, Julia Marie Salveson.
Oliver did well and became a businessman in Chicago. When he died his wife gave 5000 Kroner ca 800 Dollar to Voss orphanage.
- Anna Olsdatter Rokne 1830 married 1853 Lars Knutsen and takes over the farm.

| oh please forgive me for not paying attention to information i have found,this is pertaining to the Gudve that i made into a secret . Gudve would of been my great grandmother.her name on the digitalarkivet from 1875-telling for 1235 voss number on left side is 694 circuit number 12 she would be 4673 4 ,gudve Endresdatter year of birth 1860 place is Vangens sogn vos pr. i guess her and steffenwere married june 7 1887.their children were kari or carrie - ingeborg- lars and lars and bertha who was my grandmother, when we started this we had no information, bertha died at the age of 31 and her son my dad was 7. he did not even know where she was buried until he was 65, that was when the research started.he died 5 years later, but now i want to know what he missed out on about his mother and her life.,i am 68 and trying to get it all before i go, not knowing when but the eagerness to do, i want to do a family book on what i learn so this is why i desire to know, but i am sorry i dont inform you correctly.i will try to do better.but please i i am so very grateful as to i have gotten from you ,i just need to like you say take it easy. |
