Hi all you wonderful researchers,

I'm trying to help someone trace the family history of her ancestor Maren Janette Larson.

She was called "Nettie" and born about 1857- 1863 in Norway. Her father was Lars Olson Gilbeck.

She immigrated as a youngster ca 1870-1878 and is first found in USA in Dunn County, Wisconsin.

We've found the following USA records for Nettie that fit her family's oral history.

I've added records of a Norwegian family that might be Nettie's family. I based this on a burial in Wisconsin of a Lars Olson Gjelbekk.

The discussion of Nettie started on an Ancestry message board; I've transferred the findings here.

Your advice, additional information, and illumination are much appreciated!

==================================================
ABOUT NETTIE

Nettie Larsen married Ole Andreas Olson,
next married Oscar Olson.

Death Date: 12 Jan 1930
Death Place: Roosevelt County, Montana, USA
Age at time of death: 67 years old, 6 months, 7 days
Spouse Oscar Olson, informant
Father Lars Olson Gilbeck

Death record puts her birth at about 05 July 1863?

In the 1910 census Nettie is younger than in 1900, but family oral history says both records are correct.

LARS OLSON FAMILY IN AMERICA

The following 1880 US census lists the children of this family as Olson, but I think that's a mistake stemming from their father's name of Olson. I'd appreciate your comment on that.

1880 US Census
Portland, Monroe, Wisconsin
Lars Olson 46 born about 1834 in Norway
Maria Olson 41 born about 1839 in Norway
Agerton Olson 19
Louis Olson 16
Jany Olson 15 [maybe = Jorgine Caroline]
Christian Olson 9 born in Norway
Lina Olson 6 born in Wisconsin
Thilla Olson 2 Born in Wisconsin

Find a Grave lists the following burials that I believe may be for the above couple:

Lars Olson Gjelbekk 1833-1917
Marie Paulsdatter Roise Gjelbekk 1837-1882
burial Skogdalen Cemetery, Vernon County, Wisconsin

The name Marie Bramerud is also on the grave marker of this couple, with no dates (a daughter? a second wife for Lars?)

==================================================
LARS OLSON DAUGHTER "LINA"

I include the following info for Lina because here the name "Gelbeck" pops up.

MARRIAGE
03 January 1895
Westby, Vernon, Wisconsin
Lina Larson, born Portland, Monroe, Wisconsin
Father: Lars Olson
marries
Mathias Fremstad, born Coon Valley, Vernon, Wisconsin, parents Torger Fremstad, Marthe Fremstad

1900 US CensusPortland, Monroe, Wisconsin
Mathias Fremslad 41
Lina Fremslad 26 born April 1874 in Wisconsin
children Milton T age 5, Lorenda M age 2, Ruben A and Ruth A, twins, 1 month

1920 US Census
Portland, Monroe, Wisconsin
Matt Fremstad 60 born about 1860 in Wisconsin
Lena Fremstad 45 born about 1875 in Wisconsin
Melton S age 24, Loranda M 22, Ruben A 19, Ruth I. 19, Edgar N 13

Still in Portland, Monroe, Wisconsin in 1930 and 1940 census.

from Find a Grave:

Lena Gelbeck Fremstad born 1874 died 1947 <---------------------
Burial: Moen Cemetery, Cashton, Monroe County, Wisconsin

Also buried at Moen Cemetery is Mathiew Fremstad 1859-1940 and four of the Fremstad children with names and birth years that match the census

=================================================

Again, we are seeking the correct Norwegian family for Maren Janette "Nettie" Larson (married name Olson) - whoever they may be.

Thanks so much.

Immediately comes to mind that there are several printed records & county records which might assist you.

History of Coon Valley published about 1927 or so.

Centennial History of Oberon, North Dakota

Obits for siblings (Rowberg file or some other)

Estate settlement for Lars Olson Gjelbekk

The radical reduction in age is a bit of a puzzle but perhaps explained to "close" the gap in ages between Nettie and husband #2. Otherwise it might be some kind of census taker error either in the original or in the transcription / interpretation.

I think you have found the correct family, coming from Hurdal in Akershus county.
Marie Paulsdatter was named Røise, and there is a Røise farm in Hurdal.

I'm not sure where Lars Olsen got the name Gilbeck from?
Different spellings of the farmname:
Gelbeck
Gilbeck
Gillebak
Gjelbekk

Thank you so much for the ideas for further research. Definitely worth pursuing!

About the radical reduction in age, yes Nettie could be deliberately misstating her age. Certainly the earlier records are more credible re. her date of birth. Oscar (#2 husband) was brother to one of Nettie's son's wife. Not sure if this makes it more - or less - likely she would lie.

Have you thoughts on the discrepancy between the date of birth given on the death certificate versus the date of birth in Norway for the "candidate" Nettie?

I have had no luck tracing the other Larson siblings (aka Olson in 1880). If I had found them, they might provide a clue.

Thanks again for the info and for commenting!

Thank you for the research, and also thanks for the comment/advice! My confidence in this Wisconsin-Norway connection is much increased by the fact that you find it credible.

I had not found Røise farm, so yes that is additional evidence that the family in Wisconsin is the family from Hurdal. That hint also definitely helps link the grave marker to the family in the census.

Do you think as I do, that the 1880 census shows a bunch of "Olson" children who grew up and used the surname "Larson"?

In the marriage record for Lina Larson, her father's name is listed as Lars Olson. (though Lina Larson could be a name from a first marriage.)

The bevy of siblings in the 1880 census are unknown to Nettie's family. Plus the surname in the 1880 census is wrong, Plus I'm saying Lars Olson in the census also has the name Gjelbekk, which is not shown in the census. Plus Nettie's surname is Larson. It's a lot of discrepancies for an American descendant to swallow.

I too am wondering about that name Gilbeck. That is the tie between Nettie (who dies in Montana), and the couple buried in Wisconsin, and the family in Norway. I posted an emigration record for Lars Olsen Gilbeck - I see the name Gilbeck in the transcription but not in the original document.

The name Gilbeck does not appear in the immigration record, arriving Quebec. The voyage date and name of the ship make it apparent which immigration record is correct.

Do I understand you, that there is no Gjelbekk, Gelbeck, Gilbeck farm where Lars might come from?

The family in census 1865.

Røyse and Brosshaug (modern spelling) are neighbouring farms in Feiring, Hurdal, Akershus.
There are no farm named Gilbeck or similar nearby, They must have lived on such a farm before Lars' emigration in 1872.

Thank you! So delicious to see the family in the census that way!

About the farm Røyse: That does it - I am now convinced 100% that the 1880 census in Wisconsin is correct. The first names of all people in the family corresponds to the family in Norway, along with ages, plus the immigration record lists the family traveling to the nearest large town in Wisconsin. The "Olson" siblings in 1880 used the surname Larson as adults - or at least Nettie and Lina did, and likely Louis/Laurits and Ole.

Wow - thank you everyone - it is affirming to see the Norwegian census!!!!

> "There is a farm named Glabak just north of Feiring, in Eidsvoll, Akershus. -- Jan Peter" <

Sold! I'll take it!

1865 Census in Hurdalen (as posted for us; Marie Poulsdatter's parents)
everyone in family born in Hurdalen
Poul Christenson, Huusfader, Gaardbr. and Selveier, married, age 63, born in Hurdalen, ..?..?...?
Marthe Jorgensdatter, his wife, age 68, born in Hurdalen
Christian Poulson, their son, age 34, hjelper Faderen med Gaardsbruget (helps his dad on the farm) (?)

Another family also listed in another household - wife is Inger Poulsdatter, could be sister to Marie Poulsdatter.

Re the Olson vs Larson dustup:
As they acclimated to Yankee styles a family might gradually or abruptly change their name usage. In Norway they were all Lars sons/ datters. Over here someone asks your father's last name and the assumption is that it will be the same as his (if you are male or an unmarried female) He was an Olson therefore your father's son must be Olson, too.

Yes - applause - thank you for explaining the Norwegian way! That was my sense of it, but it's a hard sell, when I'm saying I'm no expert...

Also thanks for the enjoyable use of the word "dustup."

I'll continue to transcribe, if you all don't mind, as that will help the person I am trying to help.

1865 in Hurdalen on Braadshaug farm
Lars Olson, age 32, huusfader, Husmand med Jord (he owns land), born in Hurdalen
Maria Paulsdatter, his wife, age 29, born in Hurdalen

Agathon Larson, age 5, born in Hurdalen
Ole Larson, age 4, their son
Laurits Larson, age 3, born in Hurdalen
Tina Larsdatter, age 2, their daughter, born in Hurdalen

NELLA LARSDATTER!

Love it. Thank you!
