I looked at headstone transcriptions today from Benson county, North Dakota. Lots of Olson! But no Ole with a stone and dates corresponding to Ole Andreas or Peter Leonard but there was an Albert Olson 1858-1909 in the Stony Lake Lutheran Cemetery.

The Oberon book was marvelous but found no stories / references to connect to your family.

Thank you jkmarler. You have worked hard on this - the other researchers also have contributed so much.

On the to do list for seeking more about Lars Olson Gjelbekk - and it is all USA research:
find probate/will if possible; re. marriage records for second and third wives, evaluate and follow the wives in the records; contact owner of the "sketchy" family tree with the wife Karoline Kristiansdatter Bjornstad; track Lars's children forward in time; write to the Skogdalen church; contact other descendants if possible; figure out who is Mary Bamrud whose name is inscribed on the gravemarker at Skogdalen; polish the sense of geography (Vernon County morphs into Monroe County or something); contact the Westby genealogical society; continue to follow up on forum research suggestions, etc.

So get back to me with that, would ya? hehe Clearly some of that work if not all must be carried forward by the family member working on this family tree.

The goal of the above would be to find additional evidence that Lars Olson Gjelbek is the father of Maren Janeta Larsen (Olson) who died in Montana in 1930. This is our main goal in this thread. The family member I am helping (it is not my family) is sceptical, largely due to unfamiliarity with Norwegian naming patterns and the series of unfortunate discrepancies in the census and other records. Another challenge is that the family oral history is somewhat uncertain about some points. One story is that Nettie has a half-sister Mary. The family member has identified a 1940 census as showing Mary, but that Mary Larson was born 1894 in Norway. I have not accepted that Mary as belonging to this family (but who am I to deny her?). Mary is living with daughter Minerva and Louis Larson; she is listed as sister to Louis. A cousin Minerva Larson is remembered. Always it has seemed likely that Lars Olson Gjelbekk remarried, even before this forum found possible marriage records, and it is remotely possible (I guess) that Lars had a child when Nettie was about 45. So I've got a bevy of siblings for Nettie, who aren't recognizable to the family member, but no Mary born 1894. The family oral history is uncertain enough that I am not sure that Minerva's mother was named Mary. My thought has been to develop all the information possible about Lars - and let Mary appear or no, as she may.

As for Lars Olson Gjelbekk family - To my ears, this forum is saying "it is the right family." The ancestry of Lars Olson Gjelbekk and his wife Marie Paulsdatter Roise has been investigated, which would not happen if there was not forum confidence in this connection. That said, it is not in the nature of a genealogy help board to hand out guarantees. One does the research and makes informed judgments about who is who. And that is that.

Ole Andreas Olson and his son Peter Leonard Olson are a separate problem, with the death record of the latter possibly identified by you - to be ordered. I appreciate you adding them to your research.

Do you like my last post of "e"? I was having technical difficulties, lol.

Yes, I've noticed that sometimes posts want to escape your hand before your hand is done...

When I have an opportunity I'll take a look for obits in the Rowberg file for the Gilbeck and Olson. There may or may not be any but it would be nice to find for sure.

I hope you or your client will try a trial at the ELCA records. Could be lots of helpful details in them.

Good Luck!

Thanks so much!
To clarify - I don't have a client - I am just helping as a volunteer, like you. Though we should compile our hours and send a bill, hehe. About the ELCA records, I agree, and have recommended it following your suggestion. :D

When I get a chance later I'll look at the Dolan family tree on Ancestry listing:
Sam Gjelbbeck b 1843
Inge Gjelbeck b 1848
Alfred Gjelbeck b 1885
Martinus Gjelbeck b 1883 (Martinus Gilbeck/Martinus Gjelbeck)
Daniel Gjelbeck b 1888
Johannes Gjelbeck b 1890
Marie Gjelbeck b 1894

I see them in the 1900 census but have not looked at the tree.
Lars Olson Gilbeck should be findable in 1900 US census.

Definately should be....

Here is a link to the so-named Sam Gjelbeck listing. The writing is very faint but the "S" in Sam could also be an "L" and the beginning of the letter identified as "m" appears to me to be more like an "r"
Age given for "Sam" is 67 and migration is 1873. I think "Sam" = Lars...

Shoot. But thanks a ton for looking - it's a big help to have Rowberg checked off the "to do" list. I followed up on your "Sam Gjebbeck" idea (allowing the possibility that the 1900 children could belong to "our" Lars), which led to the record below.

In 1910 the following family is indexed on Ancestry.com as "Alson" but the original clearly says "Olson." The handwriting for "Mardenus" is messy; to me it looks like Martinus.

1910 US Census
Portland, Monroe County, Wisconsin
John Olson 21 b about 1889 Wisconsin = Johannes Gilbeck in th e 1900 census
Mardenus Olson 27 brother b about 1883 Wisconsin = Martinus Gilbeck
Tillie Olson 19 wife
Mable Olson 0
Lars Olson 76 father, widowed, born about 1834 in Norway = Lars Olson Gilbeck

=========================
I agree that "Sam" can be read as Lars. The family in America tells the story that Nettie had a half-sister Mary who is identified in the 1940 census, listed there as born in 1894. And here is Lars Gjelbeck with daughter Mary born 1894.

=======================
From an online family tree: Mabel Alice Gilbeck, daughter of Martinus Gjelbeck and Tillie Thompson, born 22 August 1909 in Cashton, Monroe, Wisconsin, and died 02 February 1972 in Sparta, Monroe, Wisconsin. See this link for more posted on this tree about Mabel:
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/c/h/Robert-Paul-Schreier/GENE1-0004.html

The tree suggests that "Martinus Olson" of the 1910 census can be Martinus Gjelbeck. Sounds like a stretch and takes a bit of tracking to follow the logic - but it is possible.

Some info is missing from the following.

OBITUARY, Wisconsin State Journal, 01 May 1951
Larson
Rites services for John O Larson, 81, who died suddenly Friday at Timber Coulee, where he was employed,will be held at 2 p m today in Our Saviors Lutheran church, Westby The Rev L L Masted will ....and burial will be in the Portland cemetery. Mr Larson was born...[missing text]... In the town of Portland, Monroe county, and lived all his life in the Westby area. He is survived by his wife, six daughters: Mrs George Gates and Mrs Roy Gallatin both of La Crosse, Mrs Alfred Leis and Mrs Morris Blihovde both of Cashton, Mrs Robert Dahl of Winona Minn, and Mrs Allen Leum [of] Cashton, a son Leslie [of] Westby, a brother Alfred Gilbeck [of] Cashton and a sister Mary Larson [of] Culbertson Montana.

**This obituary is the first definite link between the two groups of Larsen children (children of Lars Olson Gjelbeck) - those found in Portland, Monroe, Wisconsin, and those found in Culbertson, Montana (where Nettie Larson Olson lived in her last years, and where she died). This obituary also bears out the family story of Nettie having a sister Mary. And no wonder it is Mary and Ole and Louis who are remembered as Nettie's siblings - they are the siblings who migrated and lived near her.

Here is a link:

=====================================
Obits for all the younger Larsen/Gilbeck children would be helpful.
Alfred Gilbeck (married Anna Hansen) was born 29 July 1884 and died September 1966 at 82 years old. Last known residence is at Cashton, Monroe County, Wisconsin. He is buried at Skogdalen (per Find a Grave), where Lars Olson Gjelbekk and Marie Paulsdatter Roise are buried.
