Here is a copy of your reference and its environs:
To Chris - about Christian Hansen Baalsrud
Feiring local-history book:
From the part about the farms Bålsrud (Baalsrud) - "Around 1810
Buråsdelen was divided from Stenset. It is unknown which who bought it
at that time. Probably it was this farm witch was sold in 1838 to Hans
Kristoffersen Melby, born 1808, died 1851, married 1834 with Marthe
Olsdatter (Oles daughter) Stenberg, born 1810. His parents was Mari
Lukasdatter and Kristoffer Olsen at Søstun Melby (farm in Feiring). Here
parents was Anne Toresdatter and Ole Olsen at Stenberg (another farm
in Feiring). Hans Kristoffersen got the deed for 235 spesidaler (1
spesidaler was equivalent with 4 NOK Norwegian kroner) dated 2.
September 1838. Hans Kristoffersen was a soldier. In 1834 they was at
Melby and in 1837 at Limset (Gjelbek), both farms in Feiring. Child:
Kristian, born 1834. Emigrated to Westby, Wisconsin in 1854 and was
married in 1858 with Marie Enersdatter Bø. They got 8 children."

Gjestebok
Sorry to tell but the history-book does not tell anything about the voyage
in 1854, other then that among those who living Feiring it was a family
with grandparents, parents and 7 child.

Thank you jkmarler! I had thought to go to the library or a friend's house to get that PDF open and I appreciate you doing this for me.
Okay, then at least we have the name of the farm Gjelbek appearing, which earlier could not be found. Also we have others in addition to Lars Olson Gjelbekk traveling to Westby, Wisconsin area.
Do I understand correctly that the farm Limset was formerly called Gjelbek?

Well, I quickly checked and there is no Limset listed in the 1865 census. In 1801 there is a farm of that name in Nannestad in Akershus. In 1900 there are 4 farms names starting with Limset in Feiring. Perhaps Gjelbek was a local name for the place and fell in and out of favor?

Isn't that interesting....So when Lars Olson emigrates to Monroe County, Wisconsin, in America in 1872, he takes with him this farm name that is out of useage? As you say, it may be a name for that farm that is used locally, and variably. Maybe it is a new name for the farm that occurs after 1865 - but no, because then it would have been found earlier in this thread. Odd.

Thank you!

There are many new leads to pursue, thanks to the forum. At the moment i tried looking for Marthe (Mary?) Haagensdatter Bamerud to emigrate - of course the name on the grave marker might not be Lars Olson Gjelbek's mother....

From the book Coon Valley by Hjalmer R. Holand published by Augsbrug Publishing House, Mpls Minn 1928, pg:

"Else Marie Bamrud was born in Feiring, Hurdal, Norway, Dec 25, 1829, the daughter of Jens Bamrud and Margrete Christophersdatter.

She emigrated to America in 1873, and settled in Coon Valley on Section 31, Town of Washington, LaCrosse County, shortly afterward, and lived with her brother Christopher J. Lium and wife.

She never married.

Else Marie Bamrud died May 7, 1905, and is buried in Upper Coon Valley Cemetery."

Found no indexed entry for Gilbeck, Gjelbekk, nor Limset. The Skogdalen congregation was formed in 1898.

From the English version of Norwegians in America, Their History and Record: A translated version of the 1907 and 1913 Nordmændene i Amerika, deres Historie og Rekord; by Martin Ulvestad; Odd-Steinar Dybvad Raneng, Benjamin Keith Huntrods, Deb Nelson Gourley; pub by Astri my Astri Publishing, Volume 2, page 346 list of emigrants from Feiring, Hurdalen Parish:
"Lars. O. Gjelbeck, farmer, Cashton, Wis."

Ha - I searched for that book! How do you do this stuff?? Thank you. And my goodness - there is Lars O. Gjelbeck in Cashton, Wisconsin. So is Elsie a relative? Are you thinking she is Marie Bramerud on the grave marker of Lars O. Gjelbeck? Well, you can't know of course - but I'm wondering what your thoughts are.

Earlier you wrote, "There is a really sketchy database at rootsweb which contains the Lars Gjelbek you have found. Also not recently attended last date of update is 2008":

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2454674&id=I528705260

Funny thing about that tree - gives a Karoline Kristiansdatter Bjornstad for wife of Lars Olson Gjelbek, who travelled to America in 1872. Okay, second wife - Marie Paulsdatter died in 1882, when she and Lars had young children.

But the family tree goes on to say the Karoline journeyed to America WITH LARS in 1872.

Puzzling. Maybe that is family oral history (there is no source given) and they just have that part of the story wrong....?

So that's another assertion to be investigated.

Skogdalen Lutheran Church Cemetery records at US GenWeb:
http://files.usgwarchives.net/wi/monroe/cemeteries/Skogdalen-cem.txt

Address for Skogdalen is WESTBY, Wisconsin

Christopher Jenson Olsen Bamrud (Leum), born 9 February 1823 in Feiring, Hurdels [sic] found on online tree - not seeing him or Elsie in census

An Else Maria Jensen Leum, b Dec. 25, 1829, died 1908, is buried Coon Valley Cemetery, Coon Valley, Vernon, Wisconsin

About the rootsweb family tree that says Lars Gjelbek traveled to America in 1872 with Karoline Kristiansdatter Bjornstad.
No he did not.
She is not on that ship.

Caroline Christiansdatter from Hurdalen deparating Oslo 15 May 1872 destination Sparta [Wisconsin] -- yes! that certainly looks like the woman on the family tree.
She is "pige,' unmarried. Lars can't marry her when she arrives, as he has a wife and a houseful of children.
Unless there are two different Lars Olson Gjelbeks ?
I'm not letting this woman horn in on my family. ; D

Interesting about the candidate third wife! The plot thickens...

Thanks so much for both records. I very much appreciate your help.

About the book that referred to Limset (Gjelbek) farm, below is a link to a family tree for Christian Hansen Ballsrud (1834-1902) b Feiring, Akershus lived Wisconsin including Westby, Vernon, Wisconsin, wife Marie Enersdatter Bo. Worth noting because the tree creator might have further researched the location of the farm Gjelbek. A long shot:

Is there an exact date of death for Lars Olson Gilbeck's first wife and has there been a look into the church records for a funeral for her?

There is a Math Gilbeck in the WWI draft registration database at familysearch. His birthdate is given as 8 June 1882 and his nearest relative is listed as Tillie Gilbeck. Tillie's relationship is not stated (wife or sister or what) There is a marriage for a Tillie Gilboc to Andrew Gilbertson in 1889 in Vernon County.

Here is the Matt Gelback family in 1920, Tillie is the wife:

Thanks! Exact date of death for Marie Paulsdatter Roise - no we have not found that yet. She died in 1882.

There's a Mathias Gilbeck on the "sketchy" family tree you found with father Lars Gjelbek b 1833 and mother Karoline Kristiansdatter Bjornstad. b 1850

When I get a chance later I'll look at the Dolan family tree on Ancestry listing:
Sam Gjelbbeck b 1843
Inge Gjelbeck b 1848
Alfred Gjelbeck b 1885
Martinus Gjelbeck b 1883 (Martinus Gilbeck/Martinus Gjelbeck)
Daniel Gjelbeck b 1888
Johannes Gjelbeck b 1890
Marie Gjelbeck b 1894

I see them in the 1900 census but have not looked at the tree.
Lars Olson Gilbeck should be findable in 1900 US census.
