Ok so not sure what to make of all this as both the following census and Ellefs gravestone has his birth as 1862. And his immigration to the USA in 1863 Yet all the information you have all posted has his birth as 1864 with immigration to Canada in 1865.

There is always a lot of conflicting data among all the records one finds, however I think the records clearly show that the family arrived in Quebec in 1865, (see my posting of the immigration record on page 2 and even better Jackies posting of the orgianl immigration record) and Ellef was born on Oct 14, 1864

The date on Jackies posting, which can be seen on page 9, looks to me to be May, 1865, but it is clearliy 1865.

Only people with an Ancestry subscription can see what records you think are in conflict.

Conflict resolution often has to be done in genealogical pursuit.

His headstone might not be, having been created for the purpose of memorializing his death, as accurate as to his birth date as it might be for the record of his death date.

Sometimes a headstone might be the only indication you have as to a person's birth date but in this case, as in others you should examine the multitude of records on him before accepting a single record as "sure" of any given fact on a person.

You are right Anton.
They left Porsgrunn with Laurdal April 8. and arrived Quebec Mai 22. 1865, see passengers #110-119

Recidence; Holmestrand, Holmestrand and Botne is the same municipality.

The link that Ted posted for Ancestry.com was the 1900 US Census. Ted you can show the summary of the data by clicking on View Printer Friendly, then highlight the part you want to show and click copy, go to Norway Heritage and click paste. The 1900 Census has his birth year of 1862 and immigration year as 1863. Both are incorrect.

A link to the document was posted earlier by Hopkins using the Family Search program.

Ted, we know that you have received a lot of data in the last few days and may have missed some of it. However as I mentioned above Elleff was born on Oct 14, 1864. Kċre, (Kċarto) did provide a link to his birth record on an earlier page. I repeat here for you. Click on the highlighted link and look at person number 47.

So you all were so great with the previous help I figured I would request your assistance once again. I have records of one of the boys going by. Simon Olson Leagjeld however I do not get any hits when searching that name on this site but the American records show his emigration as 1865 as well. Also does LEAGJELD mean anything to anyone?

Todd county is ground zero for Leagjeld in Minnesota apparently.

Here's a Simon Olson Leagjeld in the Minnesota Death index:
LEAGJELD, SIMON OLSON
Date of Birth: na
Place of Birth: na
Mother Maiden Name: na
certid# 1928-MN-015820
Date of Death: 27 Apr 1928
County of Death: TODD

According to the following he was born about 1854, does this match the Simon in the Rolles family?

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FDQG-ZQD

Checking in the farm name index of the 1865 Norwegian census, finds no Leagjeld farm. But there are 2 places that start with "liagjeld" in Sunddal in More og Romsdal fylke, quite a different place than Holmestrand, Botne, Vestfold.

1910 census says he was married to Steena Leagjeld and they had the following children:
Olof Leagjeld,
Emma Leagjeld,
Louis Leagjeld,
Joseph Leagjeld,
Selma L Leagjeld.

Here his birth is 1856 and immigration in 1878.

Maybe his name Leagjeld = Lihjell or Liagjeld
If so that farm was in Sundalen, Mĝre og Romsdal.

Could Simon be Seming (born out of wedlock in 1854, father Ole Evensen, Liagjeld) ?

So did everyone seem to name themselves after the farm they lived on at that time?
was the farm named after the owner or was it more of a district or county of norway? I had hoped that Rolles held some meaning to the norwegians. and likewise for Leagjeld that Simon seems to have adopted.

In Norway the classic name consists of the given name, the patronymic (derived from your father's given name) and then the farm name of the place you were currently living.

In America, the system was an inherited surname usually from your father.

So immigrants were at the cusp between the two systems. Each person and each family make their own decision how to go. Generally an unusual farm name taken in America can be used to track the origin of the person in Norway. Rolles and Leagjeld (actually spelled as Liagjeld or Lihjell) are farms, indicating places to search for the relative's origin or connections.

Farms in Norway are named based on all sorts of sources. Most generally they are derived from geographical features of the farm itself. Other sources sometimes are the name of the owner, occupations followed at that farm (beside farming), etc.
