I did find a Nils born June 16, 1834, Father is Haldor Halvorson however the mother is listed as Anne Tiedmannsdatter?. Could the mother be a mistake or could it be a second wife. See #51.

No, this is Sæbu in Skrautvål, Nordre Aurdal, Oppland
Gulbrand's origin was Sårbu in Øye, Vang, Oppland.

I still wonder about immigration year of 1865 (on census ) vs. 1870 when they actually came?? Also, location of her family and connecting with Gulbrand? Looks like I'll go after some obits from this Halverson family and see if survivors list Anne as a Sorbo. Also, I'll try to find this particular Anne's marriage and see who that is to. Too bad she's not on the MOM's site. That would be too easy! Got my work cut-out for me, but if this is the right Anne, you guys have done the rest. Thanks!

You should check the MOMS site for which counties are in the base and which are not. Freeborn is not listed as being in the base(however today results from Freeborn show up--go figure) so it's possible that she & Gulbrand married there or some other Minnesota county not covered yet.

Yes there is still a ways to go to connect her to the Halver Haldorsons, the birth date is very close, the immigration date is within the +/- years rule of thumb. There were significant numbers of Norwegians in McLeod county and the county's records begin fairly early, marriages 1865 and b& d 1870. It would be very interesting to know why Lars Øyane thinks she is person from Nord Aurdal...

Jan, Can you ask Lars why he thinks this is my Anne? Just want to know the thinking. Thanks

Jackie, I didn't realize that the MOMS site doesn't include all counties. Freeborn county is certainly a possibility, too. These Halversons seem to stay in McLeod County, so I need to be sure it is this Anne who wed Gulbrand.

Here are the Gjester entries for homestead at www.glorecords.blm.gov site:

Accession Names Date Doc # State Meridian Twp - Rng Aliquots Sec. # County
46712 GJESTER, GILBERT 2/15/1909 0235 ND 5th PM 140N - 069W SE¼ 32 Stutsman
840993 GJESTER, JULIA 1/4/1922 053827 MT Montana PM 037N - 029E SE¼ 20 Phillips

Julia's was an original homestead so the file is apt to be very interesting, also spendy at $40/.

Not a whole lot of details on this family. The son Gilbert apparently married in Grand Forks county in 1910 to Annie Kortness. He also died on 2 Feb 1916 and was buried at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Forks. There is a Hannah Gjester who attended the School for the Deaf in Devils Lake and is living there in 1900. A Gunda Bertine Gjester married in Traill county on 10 Apr 1897 a Hagebart J. Hanson.

Here is a link to Julia Jester's death in Washington in 1941. This is a promising detail her father is listed as Halver Halverson:

www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/Record/View/8E5666AB2FF4146F4BF57F88ACC56DB2" target="_blank">http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/Record/View/8E5666AB2FF4146F4BF57F88ACC56DB2

Here Julia is widowed living on her own in Washington, same place as in 1935:

Great work!
The link to her death in Washington in 1941 was indeed very promising! It will be hard to find any better proof of her origin.
But even though it looks like she must be the twin sister to "our" Anne Halvorson, it might be hard to find any link to Gilbert Sorbo.
Is it possible that the death certificate could contain a Next of kin?

Below is his additional information (my translation):

I have several points that substantiates my thoughts about Anne Halvorsdatter:

* She is listed with different ages in America, between 1853 and 1856, and we know that the exact date of birth often can diverge from Norway to America. The important thing is that the calendar-difference is not too big. Up until three weeks mistake in dates is not uncommon, even if the year does not match. I've seen examples of bigger differences than this!

* The parents listed on her death certificate fits very well with the aforementioned Anne.

* Gulbrand Olson came from Valdres, and then it is likely that also Anna was from that area.

* I can't locate their marriage, but I have several examples of marriage that has not been reported to the authorities as it should have been done...

Sincerely yours,

Lars E. Oyane

Had some difficulty finding Gilbert Gjester the son in the 1910 census. At HeritageQuest his last name is indexed as "Chester". He is employed as a shipping clerk at the Biscuit co. He is boarding in a household headed by a Mary Berg age 42 b. Norway, who is widowed has had 5 children and 5 living. Her oldest 2 children are also employed at the biscuity co. All the children born in North Dakota.

At genealogybank.com in the Grand Forks Herald, there is an obituary of sorts for a person whose last name is "Chester" on 17 Feb 1916, stating he is being laid to rest today and his parents are unaware. No other details given. There is no one with the last name "Chester" buried at Memorial Park Cem in GF (as of 1995)--could be some other cemetery entirely--the snippet is mostly just the headline. There is no Gjester mentions in 1916

The North Dakota Public Death Index finds no entries of the last name Chester in 1916 but Gilbert Gjester is listed.

The 1920-census for Phillips, Montana shows they have a divorced daughter named Gundar Hansen, born ab. 1884 in Minnesota
