page 400. ........Same day priest Jens hosted the priests due, his son in law Bent and his wife Anne Jensdatter and Jahanne Jensdatter (both were Jens daughters). With them was a young man Niels Claussen, son of Claus at Sonderborg, Jens´s family and a Matz Matzen, merchant, also a relative to Jens from Skien (town in Telemark) and a pupil from Oslo, Engel Lauritsen who arrrived the vicarage today.
Page 401. At 12 o`clock after the meal the Bisop left Heiderdal (Heddal) for Seude (Sauherad parish) he gave priest Jens (Jacobsens) "qvinde" wife Metthe 1 Daler and wished her good night. Those who traveled with the bishop were Jens Jacobsen priest, Matz Matzen, Niels Clausen and a carpenter from Skien and the bishops travel companions (guards and other helpers)

That is what I "got" from the translation as well. The relative, Neils Claussen, being from Sonderborg in Denmark makes me suspicious that Jens and Mette were also Danish. Someday I may find a listing of the Norwegian priests with origins in Denmark...sigh.
Thanks again for your translating assistance.

He is most likely in the records. The Archives has total 126 000 shelf meter (2009), most of it is not online. The intention is to get 10% online within 2030, much of it must be treated with caution.

As I browse through the Heddal bygdebok, it seems that a number of families were related to that priest, Jens Jacobson...and a known daughter was married to two priests in nearby parishes. The many connections whet my curiosity.
Also one translation of the bishop's visit says that Jen Jacobson's relative, Niels Claussen, was the son of HR. CLAUS of Sonderborg (in southern Denmark)....a pretty clear indication that there are Danish roots to this family. I realize there are NOT enough records from that time to establish the entire family unit of a minor church official in a small parish, but I continue to be intrigued! |

You are probably right. Its almost 100 years since Heddal bygdebok was published, but it was of great advantage that the author O. H. Holta born 1851 in Sauherad knew most of the persons or families he wrote about.
Just a piece of information if you do not know; Hr. is not the initials of Claus first name but it means Mr.

I've been thinking that the use of "hr" was for priests and translates to Sir John Doe, to show respect for someone a bit above the common man. That is why I've been thinking Niels Claussen's father "hr Claus of Sonderborg" may have been the piest in a parish there in Denmark. Not correct?
