So happy to be a part of this community, as I have always been proud of my Norwegian heritage! I am searching for any info on my great great grandfather Halver (or Halvor, Holver, Holvar, etc.) Bergsland Olson (Oleson, Olsen). Born January 4, 1824. Died in Winchester WI on Dec. 2, 1885. His wife's name was Syrena Tine Christianson (also born in Norway). I believe that they were all from the Telemark region. My great Grandfather's name was Otis, and my grandfather was Arthur Oleson. Many thanks to anyone who can help me in my search!

Bjørn H and Halvor H are probably brothers, if they are releated to Halvor O is a question. The father of Bjørn H and Halvor H is Halvor Bjørnsen and the mother is Bergitte Halvorsdatter.

Bjørn is #6 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7987&idx_id=7987&uid=ny&idx_side=-15

And Halvor H is #10 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7987&idx_id=7987&uid=ny&idx_side=-36

Thank you Jan for all your help, the name Bergsland is inscribed on his headstone as his middle name in the Winchester cemetery. The baptism record was especially exciting, with the exact birth date. Lots to go on from there! Many thanks again, Peggy

Any idea whether Halvor married in Norway or America? I haven't found a matching marriage record from Telemark, so so far it looks like they married in America.
Skien, Telemark would be a natural port of emigration for people from the Telemark area in the 1850's. Later (after 1865), most people from this area emigrated through Oslo.

The Hjartdal History Society has collected a lot of early emigration history from Hjartdal, Telemark.
It's all in Norwegian, but you might wanna try google translate.
It says that Winchester, Winnebago, Wisconsin became a popular area of settlement for the people from Hjartdal.

And there is a farm named Bergsland in Hjartdal, Telemark.
I feel confident that your Halvor Olsen is from the Hjartdal/Brunkeberg area.

Jane, I think you have mixed two diff. Halvor's above.
I don't think Torkelie is related.
On the page you linked, Halvor (Torkelie) OLSON is born 22 Aug 1817, and married to OLSON, Anna 'Olsdtr' 'Tokelie' 27 Dec 1821 16-May-1910

This is not the same person as OLSON, Holver (Bergsland) . 4 Jan 1824 2 Dec 1885.

Yes I did notice Halvor born 1817 married to Anna Olsdtr Tokelie. It is very easy to mix up these Halvors, and perhaps in the prep of the cemetery list they got mixed. I"ll go back to the cemetery list to try to find the source of the "additional information" (i.e. the name Torkelie and the family relationships noted).

I also looked into Halvor OlsenTurkelie/Torkelie married Syrene-Severine Tine b. Feb. 23. 1831, she died Mai- 15. 1900, buried in Grace Lutheran Cemetery, Winnebago County.

I have searched the Bjaaland family to find a connection to Bergsland without any luck.
Bergsland are farms in the neighboring municipalities Sauherad, Hjartdal and Gransherad (Hiterdal/Heddal) and Bamble.
The father Ole Bjørnsen was from Bjaaland/Bjåland, the mother Gunnhild Halvorsdatter was from Haukom in Kviteseid.
