I have been searching for Axel Berntsen, born 1883 Arendal, Norway. He immigrated in 1910. He married Josephine Pedersen in 1913 in Brooklyn. On his marriage certificate in Brooklyn he lists his parents as John Berntsen and Elisabeth Andersen There is a WWII draft registration in 1942 showing him born Jan. 19, 1883 in Alendel (which probably should be Arendal). He was naturalized in 1938 at US district court in Brooklyn. His social security application shows him as Axel Wilhelm Berntsen b Jan. 19, 1883, and his parents as Berent Johan Ericksen and Marie Elisabeth Andersen on Feb. 9, 1937, and place of birth as Arendal, Norway. He is on the 1915 NYS census in Brooklyn, and on the federal census of 1920, 1930. They show his parents being born in Norway.
I've searched Digitalarkivet and cannot find Axel or his parents anywhere. Neither the census nor the Arendal birth records show anything.
Hopefully someone will be able to help |

A possibility: Carpenter Axel Wilhelm Brunstrom (27) from Arendal, Norway arrived New York on May 01, 1910 on the ship The Caledonia His destination was Scandinavian Sailors home in Brooklyn, New York. But: He is listed as born in Finland. Closest relative is Peter Erikson in Arendal. Possibly this one in Census-1910? Peter's wife listed as Marie. Census-1900 The parents are born in Holt, Aust-Agder, just east of Arendal. Peter is working at Nes Jernverk (Nes Ironworks) in Tvedestrand.

I think "Axel Wilhelm Brunstrom" is a very strong possibility.
First name is correct: Axel Middle name is correct: Wilhelm Year of birth is correct: 1883 Year of immigration is correct: 1910 Destination is correct: Brooklyn, NY Father's last name is correct: Erikson Mothers first name is correct: Marie Last residence is correct: Arendal Parents place of birth is correct: Norway
Being born in Finland could be wrong... the others below him on the manifest are Finnish, while the ones above him are Swedish and Norwegians.
He could be born in Holt or Tvedestrand, or it could be that the parents were on a trip in Finland when he was born (less likely).

That sounds interesting. I don't know where Brunstrom would have come from. Wonder how I can find out more information on this one. Being born in Finland could be wrong... the others below him on the manifest are Finnish, while the ones above him are Swedish and Norwegians.

Take a look at the original ship manifest at http://www.ellisisland.org/ Search for Brunstrom. The manifest also says he has been in New York in 1906/1907. The manifest has two pages.

Sailor Petter Eriksen & Marie Aslaksdatter got married on 04 Jul 1890 A bit late, if they had children born already in 1883...
Is there another Peter Eriksen in the Aust-Agder region, who could be the father to "Axel Wilhelm Brunstrom"?

I found the ship's manifest listing Axel Brunstrom. It says his father's name was Peter Eriksen. I don't think this would be the right one then since his US records Berent Johan. I am really stumped. Thanks for the hint, but I cannot find a "reply to topic". I am totally new to this forum, so don't really know how to get around it. Where did you find the other information such as his parents, etc. |

I'm sure you will find a "Reply to topic" if you look further down, towards the bottom of the page...
I haven't found "Axel Wilhelm Brunstrom"'s parents. The only clue is his fathers name from the ship manifest, and an address which looks like "34 ..... Arendal"
I found one Peter Eriksen in Holt/Tvedestrand, which is next to Arendal, in census-1900 and 1910, but I'm in doubt if he is the correct one. He and his wife are born in 1864, and they married in 1890. So it's likely that this Peter Eriksen could be ruled out.
But still; the Axel Wilhelm arriving in 1910 could be the right one.
