Hi everyone, I've been researching my Norwegian ancestors in Chicago and have found a picture of my great-great-grandfather's store. His name was Iver F. Iverson, he was married to Ellen Marie Theslie (also spelled Elen, Maria, Thestli, and Tesli). They had one son, Arthur Louis Iverson. They appear in the census and city directory between about 1880 - 1900, and Iver is sometimes listed as a "sailor"-- we knew he sailed on Lake Michigan-- and sometimes listed as a "clerk." However, I'm not able to find any digital records of him operating this store. The store is called "Scandinavian Book Store" at address 95 (not sure of the street name). You can see from the sign on the sidewalk that they also sold steamship tickets, railroad tickets, drafts, and money orders. Family rumor says that Iver's business partner left, and Iver disappeared shortly after. We therefore don't know when or where he died. If anyone could help me figure out more about this bookstore, such as where it was located, what the exact year was, or who the business partner was, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thank you, Carrie |

Could the birth given for Ellen Marie Theslie married to Iver Iversen Dec 1858 be wrong? An Elen Marie was born March 6 1847 at the farm Teslid in Sør Trøndelag, baptism #26. Her father was Peter Olaus Bjørnsen and the mother was Olava Olsdatter Elen Marie, her sister Oline and brother Ole Bjørn left for America in April 1880 (same year as the Ellen Marie married to Iver Iversen emigrated).

Arthur L. Iverson (b. 1882, d. 1933) is the boy in the photo?
The LDS Family History Library collection has a large collection of Chicago (and surrounding area) city directories available as photocopied to microfilm/microfiche. They have not been digitized and made available on the Internet but are available to be ordered and sent to any Family History Center convenient to you. |

Thanks everyone. I've tried the city directories including the business classifieds but have not found this bookstore. The directories occasionally list Iver F. Iverson as a "com trav" (commercial travel agent) or "clerk," but I still haven't seen the store in any listing.
We have the original marriage certificate of Ellen and Iver, and they were married in Chicago in 1882. We also have the original birth certificate of their son Arthur, and he was born in Chicago in 1883. On this paper it says "Ingeborg Thestli" was present. On the online emigration database, an Ingeborg (age approximately 52), Elen Marie (age approximately 25) and Petra (age approximately 10), all with surname Tesli, are listed as passengers for Chicago. So I assumed that Ingeborg was Elen's mother. The only Norwegian birth record I've found with an Elen Marie daughter and Ingeborg mother were from Sør Trøndelag 1858, and Ingeborg's surname was listed as Tesli there. But I will still look into this Teslie farm. Very interesting! |

Thank you so much for the link to the baptism record you found of Elen Marie! I noticed on the right hand page there is a name listed that looks like Ingeborg Bjorns-- ? I have seen the person I thought was Elen's mother (Ingeborg) listed as Ingeborg B in another reference. Could anyone offer insight as to what the names on the right hand page indicated? Were they just other people that lived at the farm? |

The column you refer to are the witnesses at the baptism. I read as follows Mdm (madam) Teslie, P (maiden) Ingeborg Bjørnsdatter, Teslie, Jomf. (maiden) Anna Birgithe Embu?, Bjørn Teslie, Byggmester (builder) August Peter, Ole Bjørnsen, Teslie. |

Elen Marie, her mother (now married to her 2nd husband Ole Sivertsen), and her sister Oline and brother Bjørn in 1865.
The family in 1875, Elen Maries brother Bjørn Petersen is now the owner of the farm.

Thank you greatly for all this research.
Do you think the following is an error, or a different person?

Elen Marie Jonsdatter, born to Ingeborg Tesli and Jon Granaas, Dec 1853? |

- it is another Elen Marie - she was the daughter of Jon living at Granaas in 1853. His wife Ingeborg Tesli was the daughter of Bjørn - i.e. she was Ingeborg Bjørnsdatter.

Thank you, that is what I thought. I believe Elen Marie Jonsdatter is my ancestor, because her mother's name is Ingeborg Tesli.
An Ingeborg Testli was present at the birth of my great-grandfather (Arthur Louis Iverson) in Chicago. |

You are member of a great family. Ole Olsen Teslie b. on farm Bakken 1770 in Røros, Sør Trøndelag, moved to Strinda where he bought both of the Tesliefarms in 1803.
He was temporary Sheriff in Strinda 1818 and member of the Parliament the same year. In 1814 Ole Teslie was "Valgmann" one of the participants who choosed representatives to the parliament on Eidsvoll where the Norwegian Constitution was founded Mai 17. 1814 (Norways National Day) He participated as member in 15 committees in the Parliament and took part in the coronation ceremony when Karl Johan was crowned in Nidarosdomen Sept. 7. 1818.
1831 the Tesli farms was taken over by his son-in-law Bjørn Pedersen Ole Teslie d. on Nedre Tesli 1851.
