Another route to descendants is to follow the children of Nicholai Johan Skjarstad ("Nick"). Elizabeth seems to be "Betty" in the 1940 census. JaneC:. Nicks grandchild, Wendy Fesler says she don`t know about her great grandfather Oluf but I have now get information that he lived in 1954, 67 years old. See the topic earlier on this site
jkmarler: I have done some search for Olufs Brother Nic Hansen but I am not finished this. I am going on furhter searches. Thanks for help
Amazing how they changed their names when they came to America. His parents Norwegian names is Hans Larsen and Alette Martine Mortensdatter. They are born in 1848/1853 I am impressed how you can find information
-but have his parents lived in America?? I think they have not. Their graves are in Norway, burial 1925/1921 in Harstad, North-Norway - look at DIS-Norge
From Seattle Daily Times, Monday 3 Jan 1955 page 27 column 5, Nick Hanson:
"Funeral services for Nick Hanson of Edmonds, a deep-sea fisherman, will be held 11:30 o'clock tomorrow in the Beck Mortuary, Edmonds. Burial will be in Pacific Lutheran.
Mr. Hanson 70, died Friday in a hospital after a short illness. Born in Norway, he came to Seattle in 1910. He had his own fishing vessel for many years. He moved to Edmonds 14 years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Jenny, two daughters Mrs. May Scharnhorst, Prosser, Okanogan county and Mrs. Nellie Arundell, Seattle; a step son Henry Jacobsen Seattle, a brother Olaf Scharstad, Savanna, Illinois and three grandchildren."
Savanna, Illinois is located in Carroll county along the Mississippi River as it borders between Iowa and Illinois.
This marriage ended in divorce. In the Seattle Daily Times, dated Friday 5 Jan 1945, pg 18, col 6 in an article titled "Divorces Asked" Hazel from Nick Skjarstad, cruelty
And apparently Nick married again as there is another divorce granted found in the Seattle Daily Times Saturday, 27 Nov 1948 pg 10, col 6 under the heading "Interlocutory Divorce Decrees Granted": Lillian from Nick J. Skjarstad
This is from The Free Dictionary by Farlex online: interlocutory decree n. a court judgment which is temporary and not intended to be final until either a) other matters come before the judge, or b) there is a specified passage of time to determine if the interlocutory decree (judgment) is "working" (becomes accepted by both parties) and should become final. Interlocutory decrees were most commonly used in divorce actions, in which the terms of the divorce were stated in an interlocutory decree, which would be in force until a final decree could be granted after a period of time (such as one year after serving the divorce petition). The theory was that this would provide for a period in which reconciliation might be possible, and would also test the efficacy of the original order which might be changed upon a motion of either party. Interlocutory decrees of divorce have been abandoned as a procedure in most states, because they seldom had the desired effect and appeared to waste the parties' time.
I know that Nick Skjarstads married and divorces and have the marriercertificate from 1943 and 1946 ( Hazel and Lillian). The big question is have they got any children with Nick? I know Nick died alone in Fairbanks in 1972 without known relatives.
I have tried to order his deathcertificate, used a link on Ancestry.com but it should be problem. It seems to be only nearest Family whom can order this.
Nick Hansen had four brothers in addition to Olaf. Their name were Hagen Leonard, Emil Johan and Julius Kristian Bernhard. I have not heard they emigrated to America.
