The county courthouse is your likeliest venue (unless Nicholas took a homestead from the Federal gov't.--good luck finding the search engine for homestead records during the shutdown) Here is a link to the Register of Deeds for Chippewa county, there is also a tab for the Chippewa County Genealogical Society:

http://www.co.chippewa.wi.us/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=121&Itemid=43

You might also want to look at www.usgenweb.com for Chippewa county and the catalog search for Chippewa at www.familysearch.org

You might want a copy of Thomas' and Mary's marriage record to get the names of witnesses (sometimes relatives) and which church or judge married them.

What does the middle initial "N" of the Richard N. Thompson stand for?

Have you seperated which of the 7 children in Austin Granger's 1900 household might actually belong to Thomas Thompson? Mary has born 8 and 7 are living. Austin was married in 1878 and had at least one child by the 1880 census...

Thomas and Mary had George Albert, Richard, Archie(Ward) he was given up for adoption, and John. Mary and Austin had Ella, Effie, Samuel, Archie Grangers. I will look and see if I can find what Richards middle name was.

So children born to Mary Ann / Marion Thomas with first husband Thomas Thompson:

1. George Albert Thompson b. abt 1877
2. Richard N____ Thompson b. Sept 1879
3. Archie (Ward) Thompson b. ? but before 1886
4. John Thompson b Oct 1882

with husband #2 Austin Granger
5. Ella Granger b. ?
6. Effie Granger b.Aug 1888
7, Samuel Granger b. 1893
8. Archie Granger b. Feb 1896

Is Ella the one who has died before 1900?

Is the Richard Granger in the household in 1900 actually Richard Thompson or is he the sone of Austin Granger and his 1st wife Ada?

Ella is listed as May in 1900. Ella May Granger married John Orville Inscho in 1902.

Did brother John Thompson marry a sister to John Orville Inscho? Same link as above.
John P. (Jack) Thompson, born 21 Dec 1884 in Diamond Ridge, Dunn County, Wisconsin, and died 01 May 1966 in New Battle, Saskatchewan, Canada
Ella Leora Inscho, born 04 Apr 1885 in Durand, Pepin County, Wisconsin, and died 14 Jan 1969 in Eau Claire, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin
Marriage: 27 Nov 1903 in Dallas, Barron County, Wisconsin.

Effie Granger Smith (1888-1976)

Austin GRANGER & Adda RERDEN
Marriage 09 Jan 1878

Here is a database containing some of Thomas (or as they also question Thorfin?) Thompson. Story about the accident very like yours but details about John who went to Canada and Archie who was adopted. Patricia Lenoir last attended in 2002 so old, old contact info:

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2185445&id=I113289481

There is a Thorfin Thompson in the Bloomer cemetery at Findagrave.com with dates b. 1866 d. 1924, so can't be your guy.

Here is one of 2 mentions of the name Nicolaus Torfindson at familysearch:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NHH7-1YD

And here is the other, marrying Anne:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NW6C-QH6

Nicholaus and Anne migrating to America 1854 top of the utflyttede column right hand page:

Kildeinformasjon: Hordaland fylke, Ulvik, Ministerialbok nr. A 13 (1853-1863), Utflyttede 1854, side 246.

I didn't know that any of them died before 1900. John Thompson married and Inscho to. In the 1900 census they listed all the kids as Granger. The census taker must have thought they were all one family.

I don't think it's a coincidence any more. There is a Jacob Thompson living in Chippewa county, Wisconsin and he is the father of the Torfin Thompson b. abt 1866 d. 1924 in the cemetery. Here is a transcription of Jacob Torfindsen's baptism--same parents as Nicholaus' already posted:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N4GT-W9V

Here is Jacob Torfindsen Hotle leaving #17 utflyttede:
Kildeinformasjon: Hordaland fylke, Ulvik, Ministerialbok nr. A 13 (1853-1863), Utflyttede 1856, side 250.
Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8315&idx_id=8315&uid=ny&idx_side=-195

Jacob Thompson's family at Eagle Point, Chippewa county, Wisconsin in 1880 census:
Self Jacob Thompson M 55 Norway
Wife Julia Thompson F 55 Norway
Daughter Lena Thompson F 16 Norway
Son Tony Thompson M 12 Wisconsin, United States
Daughter Rena Thompson F 11 Wisconsin, United States
Son Edward Thompson M 8 Wisconsin, United States
Son Albert Thompson M 5 Wisconsin, United States
Son-in-law Paul Jackson M 28 Wisconsin, United States

Jacob Thompson's birthdate 8 Aug 1825 matches the birth date of Jacob Torfindsen from Norway per findagrave:

So the census age for Thomas Thompson is wrong. He was probably born 1846 ,not 1836 like the census said.

If he is the Thoms in Nicholas Tophelson's household then the 1880 census is 20 years off.
