gday guys/gals, I am trying to find information on my Great Grandfather details below:
name: John BROWN (doesn't sound Norwegian)
birth: 5th August 1885, Fredrikstadt? Fredrickshal?
landed in Australia: 1906 on the Barque HERMES in Rockhampton from Bristol.
naturalised: 14th September 1915
enlisted WW1 sept 1915
killed in WW1 9th October 1917
apparently he served in the United States Navy for 3 years (on his service record)
his children names:
1st born John BROWN
2nd born Alfred john BROWN
3rd born Frederick BROWN
many thanks for your time I really want to trace this line back..appreciate all help

With this information, he should be easy to find...
Fredrikstad and Halden (previously named Fredrikshald) are two cities in Ĝstfold, Norway. The christening records are available for free online.

Perhaps he shoosed the simplest solutuion.
Brown is Brun in Norwegian.
Brun/Bruun is a familyname in Norway.
Jon/John/Johan/Johannes Brun/Bruun.

Since John Brown born August 5. 1885 in Fredrikstad or Fredrikshald (Halden) has not been found I have a candidate to investigate.
Carl Johan Chresten Andreasen
He was bap. in England August 20. 1885 by (I suppose) Norwegian parents.
If he was born August 5. and one of the parents was a "Brown"........ Link

| hey Kċre this would make some sense because the ship he came out on left from Bristol, its unfortunate that he possibly was working on it and wasnt any passenger lists, many thanks appreciate your help, im coming up to days off so will put my head down and do some more hunting, take care and stay safe |

I have a candidate for his mother Maria Kristine Nielsen, there is a but, she was very young, born Sept. 18. 1870 in Oslo.
Her mother was Helene Dorthea Braun, see #32
Braun is German for Brown.

good morning to all, tyvm for all the help its so appreciated (ty Jane for your email its very informative) ok lets see how i go.
JaneC - i have his full WW1 personnel records as he died at war there is no death certificate issued 
David - he enlisted under John BROWN
Janes Email - the source for birth date is his naturalisation papers (we have copy),
he was never officially married (lived in sin lol) so no marriage records.
i have my granfathers birth certificate which states his father as Jack BROWN born Fredrickshald..
as far as immigrating to Australia, we have him on the ship Barque Hermes (naturalisation papers) arriving in Rockhampton queensland australia in july 1906,
it appears he must have been working on the ship as there are no passenger lists for that ship and stayed??
i appologise for the referencing on ancestry i am uploading all his records now so you all can see, i really appreciate all the help you guys have provided |

| Thanks Stephen - no need to apologize for the referencing on Ancestry. Lots of people provide only a brief sketch there, without upoading all their background and source material. As far as accessing your info on Ancestry, a person needs a subscription to do so (I think an individualized personal invite also works) and many don't subscribe. |
