Perhaps Jan Peter (jwiborg) might have time to help you.
He is an expert on that sort of thing.

It seems like no "John Brown" was born in Fredrikstad or Halden August 5. 1885.
I wonder if the info comes from oral tradition or written sources?
If the source is written, are the dates blurred so that they may be misunderstood?

Hi

I have looked up his naturalization-papers here; http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/NameSearch/Interface/ItemsListing.aspx

and the date and place are very easy to read.
It says he was born: the fifth day of August in the year 1885 in Frederikshal, Norway

But on his Enlistment-papers dated Sept 25, 1915 he is said to be 30 years and 7 months old. This should make him born about Feb./March 1885.

(I don't know how to make links to it, sorry)

Fredrikstad is eliminated
Fredrikshald is Halden.
There was a Fredrikshald farm in Ringsaker, an old couple, Hans Fugleseng and his wife Gĝnner Olsdatter, lived there in 1900.
An Johannes was born in Ringsaker August 4. 1885 to Ole Halvorsen and Ingebjĝrg Johannesdatter so we can probably exclude him.

Feb. March 1885 there are several good candidates in Halden. Espeseally Johannes, a very common name in Halden.
A problem is to find out the origin of Brown or Brun/Bruun.
Many em. changed name to the unknownable, but most kept the initials.
J. B?
