Ole Jensen Rise was born ab. 1823 in Toten, Norway and was married in Østre Toten i 1845 to Helene Andersdatter Rise, born ab. 1823 in Toten.

In 1865 they lived in Stubbrud, Østre Toten.
Ole Jensen went to America in 1870 and Helene in 1871.

Their children who went to America i 1871, were Birte Marie (b.1850), Johanne (b.1855), Olianne (b.1858), Ole (b.1860) and Karine (b.1863).
Their sons Johan (b.1845) and Gustave (b.1847) went in 1875.

I found Ole H. Jenson and wife Hellene Jenson in the 1880 census in Hartland, Pierce county, Wisconsin in 1880.

I can´t find them after this, and I have only found information about one of their children, Johanna. She lived in Christiania, Dane county, Wiscinsin all her life and had many children.

Can anyone help me find Ole, Helena or their children in the censuses after 1880 ?

What surnames have you searched for them? The children might carry Olson rather than Jenson. If there were too many Jensons maybe Ole and family adopted Rise or Rice for a last name.

Do you have the full dates of birth of the family members? In the 1900 US census birth month and year are given. You may search for just the first name and look through the potentials taking those with the correct month and year for further study.

Yes the birth day-month-year of a person is often stated on his/her death record in the USA and this helps to identify him/her as being the same as the person in Norway.

How do you know the emigration dates? It is helpful to see the record, so will you please post it if you can? Thanks.

Is this "your" Johanna, below?

1880
Christiana, Dana, Wisconsin
H. C. Jacobson 40 b abt 1840 Norway, farmer
Johanna Jacobson 27 b abt 1853 Norway
Julia Jacobson 7 b Wisconsin
Oscar Jacobson 1 b Wisconsin
Gulich Johnson 29 b Norway, works on farm - all these single men are born in Norway and work on the farm
Ole Strand 26
Ole Tostenson 25

Find a Grave Memorial for this Johanna Jacobson says she's born 30 July 1855, died 03 Nov 1945; husband Hans C Jacobson b 27 Nov. 27 1838, d 01 Dec 1901

Thank you for the replies.
The birth dates of Oles children :

- Johan, 9 Aug 1845
- Gustav, 23 Aug 1847
- Birte Marie, 23 Aug 1850
- Johanne, 23 Sept 1855
- Olianne, 19 May 1858
- Ole, 11 Oct 1860
- Karine, 6 Febr 1863

I think Ole Jensen is the one born 23 April 1822 and Helene 6 June 1824.
About Johanna, from the Toten emigrant project :

Johanne Olsdatter f. 30. jul. 1855 Skjefstadeie. Pigen Johanne Olsdr. f. 30/7-55. Att. 15. apr. (7-p355) Hun giftet seg 1872 med Hans Christian Jacobsen.

Hans Christian Jacobson, farmer, born 27.Nov. 1838 at Lae, Ostre Toten, Oppland County, Norway, died 1. dec. 1901 in Christiania, Dane County, Wisconsin.Married 17.Jan 1872 to Johanne Olsdtr. Born 30. July 1855 at Skjefstad, Ostre Toten, Oppland County, Norway, died 3. Nov. 1945 in Cambridge, Wisconsin.

Johanne utvandret April 15. 1871

They got 9 children:

Julia Jacobsen, born 13. Sept. 1872 in Christiania, Dane County, WI , died 15. Oct. 1961 In Richland center, WI. Helmer Oscar Jacobsen, born 22. May 1874, in Christiania, Dane County, WI, died 17. July 1877 at the same place. Olive Josephine Jacobsen, born 13. May 1876 in Christiania, Dane County, WI, died same place 11.dec. 1877. Oscar Jakobsen born 2. sept. 1877 in Christiania, Dane County, WI, died 4. Sept. 1933 same place. John Cornelius Jacobsen, born 16. Apr. 1882 in Christiania, Dane County, WI and died 28. July 1968. Herman N. Jacobsen born 3. March 1885 in Christiania, Dane County, WI, married 3. March 1907, died 6. June 1955 all at same place. Hilda Josephine Jacobsen 26. Aug. 1888 in Christiania, Dane County, WI and died 22. June 1974 in Hartford, Connecticut. Ella Rosela Jacobsen born 4. Apr. 1892 in Christiania, Dane County, WI and died 9. July 1911 at the same place. Alice Marion Jacobsen born 24. May 1897 in Christiania, Dane County, WI and died 10. Apr. 1978 in Stoughton, Wisconsin.

They were married on 17 Jan 1872. Could they have been married in Minnesota ? I saw somewhere that a Johanna Jenson (or Olson) was married in Polk county.

Thank you.

Question: Do you have the other emigration records also?

Question: Do you know why 10-year-old Johanne is not with the Ole Jensen family in 1865? (You are sure she is a daughter of the same family?) Do you know why her birth date (23 Sept 1855, the date you gave) is different from the birth date for Johanne, wife of Hans Christian Jacobsen (30 July 1855)? if you have given us baptism dates, please know that it is the date of birth that will appear on records in the USA.

Since Johanne Olson Jacobson had a child already in Sept. 1872 in Christiana [township?], Dane, Wisconsin, it may be that the Olson family appears in the early records of East Koshkonong Lutheran Church, a Norwegian immigrant church. Johanne Olson Jacobson is buried at East Koshkonong cemetery. East Koshkonong Church is located at 454 East Church Road, Cambridge, Wisconsin. The church phone number is (608) 423-3017. Here is a link to a website that shows the church and the cemetery:
http://www.eancestry.org/showmedia.php?mediaID=2274&cemeteryID=52

In the emigration record for Ole and his brother, they say their destination is Milwaukee, Milwaukee county, Wisconsin. It seems unlikely that Johanne married in Minnesota, which is to the west, and then traveled east back to Wisconsin to have a child in 1872 - though of course it's possible.

Question: Can you add birth information for Ole Jensen and Hellene Andersdatter? If so you can help us identify them in the USA. The parents' names may be on his/her American death record. Less likely but possible is a place of birth. Various questions can be answered with research, but if you've already done a given bit of research it is better that you share it. Thanks.

Thank you, Jane

Question 1 : Here are the other emigration records. Helena and her youngest children :

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=199&filnamn=em03011867tillegg&gardpostnr=9169&merk=9169#ovre

Her son Gustav Olsen and wife Ingeborg :

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=213&filnamn=EMIOSLO&gardpostnr=34650&merk=34650#ovre

Her son Johan travels together with Gustav, but is not mentioned in the emigrant records. He was married in 1868 to Oline Olsdatter.

Question 2 : There is a Johanne Olsen on the farm Slaatom in the 1865 census. She is 10 years old, and is staying with that family, probably because her parents couldn´t take care of her. That was common at that time.

In the "Toten emigrant project" is says that Johanne Olsen was born 30 July 1855. That birth date also appear in the church records when they left Østre Toten. I have gone through all the birth dates to Oles children again, and they all are correct, except for Johanne. You were right, the date 23 Sept was the date of baptism. She was born 6 August 1855.

Question 3 : Ole Jensen was born 23 April 1822 at Høveren, Toten. Father was Jens Gulbrandsen og mother was Johanne Jacobsen.
Helene was born 6 June 1824. Parents were Anders Enersen and Berte Enersen.

Thanks RF.

EMIGRATION
registering to emigrate from Kristiania
19 April 1871
sailing on the ship Anna Delins
Destination: Port Huran [=Port Huron]
Traveling together:
Helene Andersdtr, g, 48 Bustad = Ø. Toten [all 6 persons]
Berthe Marie 21
Johanne, 16
Oleane, 10
Ole, 8
Karine, 6

Port Huron is an inland port located near Detroit, on the Great Lakes. This probably means they traveled to Quebec and from there up the St. Lawrence seaway, and from Port Huron they would perhaps travel part of the way to Wisconsin by train, and probably at least part of the way by wagon.

Gustav Olsen, arbeidsm., 27, Bustad: østre Frosen destination: Stoughton Wiscon.

Also traveling from østre Frosen to Stoughton Wisconsin:
Oline Olsen, kone, 24, born about 1851
Emilie age 4, Inga Helene age 3, Olaf age 2, Oleane age 1 -- all surname Olsen

Is this Oline the wife of Johan, do you know? The children's names seem to maybe reflect his mother and father and sister.

Will wait to hear from you.

As lyndal40 posted, this family arrived Quebec 14 May 1875 (per Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935, transcribed on Ancestry.com)

Johan Olsen 29, lab., destination Stoughton Wis.
Oline Olsen 24
Emilie age - 4-1/2
Olaf age - 2-1/2
Gustov - 27
Ingeborg - 25
Inge - age 3-1/2
Inf - age Infant (?)

--the surname Olsen is given only once, after Johan's name, giving the clear impression this family is traveling together.
--the first names are listed in the order as shown, giving the impression that each couple has two children
