My great great grandfather came to the usa in 1869 Ole johanson rudd kjos with wife Gunnhild ATorstein Kjos from Gausdal,Norway from the Kjos farm. They six young boys they brought with them. Was said they came on a wooden boat. looking for any information or passenger lists that might tell where there port of entry was at and what port they departed from. Any help on any sites that might have any information would help.

Hi.
More than 2000 em. from Gausdal dep. via Christiania (Oslo).
They were reg. in Gausdal church book April 4.

Unfortunately passenger list do not exist for the majority of the ships leaving Christiania (Oslo) 1869

That family tree is missing the youngest son Amund.

One truism is that the majority of Norwegians came through Canada into the US. But the truth is, any port on the eastern seaboard is a possible entry point.

Did any of the Kjos' become US citizens? In a Declaration of Intention (the first papers to file in the process) often there is asked for the port of entry into US and a month and year of the entry. If Ole Johansen didn't file, then it's possible that any of the 6 boys filed at some point, most often to take a Homestead.

They emigrated from Kristiania/Oslo on 19 Apr 1869 on the barque Rubens. Destination was Quebec.

Ole Johannesen Kjør, 42, Gusdal
Gunild Torstensdatter, 38
Tobias Olsen, 18
Mathias, 13
Johan, 10
Olaus, 6
Martinius, 4
Tormod, 1

They are also listed here. See also this topic.
The barque Rubens was made of teak and oak. The outside of the hull (the part below the waterline), were fitted with copper-plates.

I haven't found any picture of the ship, but it would have looked something like this:

To Quebec
The fast-sailing, metal-skin clipper-ship Rubens ("size 315 commerselest"), will depart from Christiania with Emigrants one of the first days of April.
The Captain has previously commanded the well-known Emigrantship "Drøbak", and has thus long experience in passenger shipping, and he will personally guide the Passengers to Chicago.
The tickets are cheap; further information orally or in writing are given by the master of the ship.

I am overwhelmed with gratitude for all the information I received here, for sometime I have wondered about the passage my great great grandparents took to come to America. I have put together a Kjos history here and from time to time I search looking for information about my family. On my mothers side my grandfather immigrated from Oslo ,this history is more complete ,his name was Albert kulvik. I thrive to always get more information, on there lives back then, how they lived, how were the times they were living in, etc. I hope that if you have anything more on this area and the life they might have led that you might share with me,I thankyou so much for your help and to my eldest son who brought me to the attention of this site.
