I am searching for info on my grandmother Nora Lund. She was born in Eidsvold or Eidsvoll in 1882. I believe she was the youngest child and only daughter with 6-7 older brothers. I was always told her father was a tailor. She emigrated to America in May, 1908, where she married Bennett Larson and lived in Spring Green, Wi. The Ellis Island site lists her cousin as John Johnson, Spring Green, Wi

A little more here:
http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=9599&p=localities.scan-balt.norway.general

A researcher in the other thread says "The emigrant register from the city/port of Oslo (Kristiania/Christiania) shows Nora Lund leaving on or about 24 April 1908. That register lists her birth as 7 May 1882 and gives her prior residence as an address in the city of Oslo."

(Full date of birth - day/month/year - is always helpful when tracing a person from USA to his/her birth in another country)

1900 Census in Norway
Lund in Eidsvoll (=alternate spelling of Eidsvold), Akershus, Norway
Nils Lund, hf, g, Skræddermester, 1837, Eidsvold Ak
Maren Dorthea Olsdatter, hm, g, Håndværkerkone, 1840, Eidsvold Ak
Nora Lund, d , ug, Handlende, Landhandler egen, tøier, 1882 Eidsvold Ak

I don't speak Norwegian but I read what the Norwegian researchers have to say in this forum, so I've picked up a wee bit. I'll try to translate and to explain the abbreviations in the above record. Hope some one else will correct any mistakes.

1) Nils Lund, husfader (male head of household), gift (married), skræddermester (master tailor) born in 1836 in Eidsvold, Akershus, Norway [so he is about age 64 here]

2) Maren Dorthea Olsdatter. husmoder (female head of household), gift (married), Håndværkerkone (wife of a workman), born in 1840 in Eidsvold, Akershus, Norway [so she is about age 60 here]

3) Nora Lund, daughter, ugift (unmarried), Handlende, Landhandler egen, tøier, born in 1882 in Eidsvold, Akershus, Norway [So she is about age 18 here]

According to a poster in the other thread, "Handlende, Landhandler egen, tøier" has something to do with a store where the family sells fabric? and Nora works in that store?

Apparently the older children are grown and gone by this time.

As you probably know, Oslo, Christiania, and Kristiania are different names for the same city.

[Back in an edit and deleted the link to the erroneous family tree]

The father's name is given as Nils Pettersen Lund in another version of the 1900 census.
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01037041006391

in 1875 Norway census, this could be the same Nils:
Vengermoen, Eidsvoll prestegjeld
Nils Pettersen 1837 Eidsvold S og Prgj Husfader G Huseier, Skrædder
Anne Olsdatter 1840 Eidsvold S og Prgj Kone G

Nils Pettersen is the name of Nora's father; a Norwegian often also used a place name and this would change when he/she moved. He was apparently called Nils Pettersen Lund when he moved to Lund farm. When Norwegians emigrated to USA, they adopted either their patronymic name or their place name (or another name entirely) to use as their permanent, American-style surname. It seems Nora used "Lund." She is the daughter of Nils ("Nilsdatter") so she could just have easily used the American-style surname "Nilsen." Don't know if you need this info, or if it helps, but adding it "just in case."

Here is a link to the 1875 Norwegian Census mentioned by JaneC above. While the spouse is named Anne Olsdatter here, I suspect she is the same person as in the 1900 Norwegian Census.Maren Dorthea Olsdatter. Looking at the siblings I do not see a N. A. Lund, but I do see a Nikolai who may be the person mentioned in the ships manifest.

Here is the baptismal record for Nikolai found in the 1875 Census. His name is Nikolai August ie N. A. so he is very likely the brother that Nora was travelling to see in Wisconsin. See number 78. Parents are Nils Petersen and Anne Dorthea Helvig Olsdatter.

Good finds!

Couple comments - on the Ellis Island free website her name is transcribed as Nora Lund. She didn't come up for me when I searched there before, but after adding details from lyndal40 posting in my search criteria, she showed up.

A correction: She is travelling to her cousin Mr. J. H. Johnson in Spring Green, Wisconsin (according to djhottma this is John Johnson). He paid for her passage.
The nearest relative in country whence she came (Norway) is her brother, Mr. N. A. Lund, xx Thranesgd. 15, Chris. [a street address in Christiania, I think].
Her occupation is "needle woman."

1875 Census in Vengermoen, Eidsvoll - everyone in the family born in Eidsvold Sogn, Eidsvold Prestegjeld
Nils Petters. is a Skrædder (tailor) born 1837
Anne Olsd. his wife b 1840
Ole Nils. son, b 1862
Johan Nils. son, b 1864
Gustav Nils. son, b 1871
Nikolai Nils. son, b 1874
Matias Petters. brother to Nils, single, Logerende, Skrædder b 1833

Thanks for all of the above info. The Pettersen, Petersen last name is new to me. Also I now have the names of some of her brothers. Any additional info would be very welcome.

Do you have any of Nora's hardanger pieces as heirlooms? If so, what a treasure! And fun to see the job titles in these old records that reflect her sewing skill.

This could be Nora's brother Johan in Oslo in 1900:

Johan N. Lund born 1867 in Eidsvold, married, Skræddersvend
Laura Lund b 1863 in Sverge [Sweden], Husgjerning
Agnes Lusie Lund b 1894 in Kristiania
Adolf Melker Lund b 1898 in Kristiania
Nils Einar Lund born 02.07.1900 in Kristiania

We have lots of hardanger pieces. She made all of us hardanger tablecloths and napkins as graduation gifts. She made pieces for people in town as we'll. When my mother-in-law died I got all the hardanger she had from Grandma. My sister has framed the first piece Grandma made at about age 8. We also have a spinning wheel she brought from Norway with the name Lund, dated 1865.

Noras siblings were:
Ole Petter, b. May 30 1862, #137
Johan Adolf, b. Dec 29 1864, #18
Gustav Martin, b. July 30 1867, #114
Anne Nikoline, b. Febr 18 1869, #15
Martin Gustav, b. Jan 8 1872, #27
Nikolai August, b. April 8 1874, #78

The family left the Norwegian State Church March 17 1882, #1.
The baptismal record for Nora therefore does not exist in the state church books.

Nils Pedersen, Vengermon and Maren Dorthea Hedevig Olsdatter, Habberstad were married May 22 1862, #15.

Nils Pedersen was 25 years old and his father was Peder Nielsen. At the 1865 census he was dead and Nils mother Anne Sophie Jensdatter was a widow living with her daughter Kattrine (Nils sister) 1865.

Maren Dorthea Hedevig was 22 years when they married. Her father was Ole Pedersen, Julsrud.

Wow, that's a lot of information. Shows that the family tree posted is wrong about Nora's mother. I will delete the link.

The March 1882 churchbook record for the family leaving the church is a very interesting find. It shows another brother for Nora, I think - Anton born 1876. The mother Maren Dorthea must have been pregnant with Nora at the time, so the 1882 record demonstrates there are no (surviving) children born between Anton and Nora.

Nora's birthdate is May 7, 1882. There is no family Bible or any other info except the spinning wheel dated 1865 with the name Lund on it.
I have a portfolio with the names of 3 brothers: ( I didn't remember this until I learned the above names.)
Ole Nilsen, Bjargars gade No 26 IIII, Kristiana, Norway
G.N. Lund, Bidenkaps Gade 4 II, Kristiana, Norway
N. A. Lund, Akers Gaden, No. 28, Kristiana, Norway
