I have a copy of the tax records for Rice Township 159 Range 71 for the year 1896. It lists each tax payer on separate lines with each of the applicable general and special taxes and the total paid that year. It lists 12 landowners on the page and Gust Johnson, Borre Johnson and Bernt Johnson are each listed separately. The Ox Creek Church Centennial Book lists Bernt Johnson, but not a Gust or Borre Johnson. Here is Bernt Johnson's history:

"The first members of the Mikkelson family came to the US in 1882. They were Hans (Mikkelson) Lokken, his wife and two children, and Bernt (Mikkelson) Johnson. Hans took the name of Lokken, the place he had worked at in Norway. Bernt took the name of his father, Johanas. Bernt worked his way over helping on the cattle boat they came on. It took them three weeks to land in the USA.

The rest of the Mikkelson family (except a son, Mathias) came two years later in 1884. They settled at Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.

Bernt married Nikoline Thorstenson at Pelican Rapids. In 1886-87 they came to ND with their infant daughter and settled near Rolette. They had nine children: Thora, born April 14, 1887, died October 20, 1943. Julius, born December 31, 1888, died October 15, 1966. Melvin, born October 12, 1890, died February 3, 1919. Albert, born October 12, 1892, died November 3, 1954. Thorvald, born December 22, 1894, died November 18, 1970. Emilia, born November 28, 1896, died April 30, 1981. Bernard, born January 17, 1899, died February 27, 19--. Thomas, born January 12, 1901, died November 14, 1970, and Norris, born August 1, 1903.

Nikolina passed away September 5, 1904. Bernt married Karen Hanson, and nine children were born to this union. Anna was born October 31, 1907 and died July 5, 1977. Clarence, born February 1, 1911, died February 1919. Alvin, born December 28, 1912, died February 1919. Henry, born December 31, 1914. Clara, born October 23, 1916. Twins, Thorlaf and Myrtle, born October 17, 1918, Myrtle died August 8, 1936. Arthur, born April 6, 1920 and Harry, born May 1, 1923.

They had 14 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Bernt died at Rolette, ND in 1942. Bernt Johnson was one of the charter members of the Ox Creek Lutheran Church.

Let me check the 1910 atlas for both Gust and Bernt Johnson.

Laura Thompson Law's Book on Rolette County history only listed August Johnson on page 125 as settling in Oxford Township Section 17. I'm not sure that is the same as "Gust Johnson."

Working on a chronology...

Ox Creek Lutheran is in Rice Township. Rice Township is in Rolette County, North Dakota.
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ndrolett/roletcem.htm

Timber Culture Act of June 14, 1878 requires you to plant and protect trees on 40 acres of a quarter section (160 acres) for 10 years and then it would be deeded to you.
Barny Samson and Alma H Samson were deeded tree claim land on 10/9/1897

Chronology
May 1882 * Arrival, port of New York * per First Papers #2 * Ramsey county, ND (south of Rolette county)
1886 * First Papers #1 (Declaration of Intent To Become US Citizen) * Black River Falls, Jackson, Wisconsin * this first filing is according to 1892 Naturalization papers
1887 * Tree Claim on quarter section in Section 1 Township 159 Range 71W * Rice Township * B Samson/Johnson? must have filed tree claim and commenced to plant and protect
1888 * Marriage of B and A * Rolette county ND * says B born 1859
1888 * First Papers #2 * Ramsey county ND (southeast of Rolette county) * Barny Samson filed Declaration of Intent to become US Citizen
1888 * First Papers #2 * Ramsey county ND * says he was born 1859
1888 * First Papers #2 * Ramsey county ND * says he arrived New York on or about May 1882
1892 * Final Papers/ Naturalization * Rolette county ND * Barney Sampson or might read "Borry"
1896 * Tree Claim Taxes on quarter section, Section 1 Township 159 Range 71W * Rice Township Rolette county ND * B Johnson paid taxes
1897 * Tree Claim Deed on quarter section, Section 1 Township 159 Range 71W * Rice Township * Barny Samson and Alma H Samson were deeded this land.
1897 * Tree Claim Taxes on quarter section, Section 1 Township 159 Range 71W * Rice Township * Berry Jonsen paid taxes
<<-------------------------------Tree Claim Taxes, Barney Johnson crossed off and Thos. Flynn paying taxes?
1898 * Tree Claim Taxes on quarter section, Section 1 Township 159 Range 71W * Rice Township * Borre Johnson paid taxes
1899 * Tree Claim on quarter section Section 1 Township 159 Range 71W * Rice Township * Barney Johnson paid taxes
1900 * US census says he emigrated 1882
1907 * Homestead Act CLAIM Filed, Section 19 Range 163N 73W * Willow Lake Township * Barny Samson FIRST filed ?
About 1907 * MOVE * to Willow Lake Township land. (Homestead Act requires residency and improvements on the land)
1910 * US census lists Berry Sampson * first written as Johnson, with the Johnson lined out and Sampson written over the last name
1910 * US census says he emigrated 1880
1913 * Homestead DEED * Section 19 Range 163N 73W * Willow Lake Township * Barny Samson and Alma Samson are deeded this land.

1910 Map, Rice Township, Rolette county, North Dakota:
http://www.historicmapworks.com/Map/US/501987/Rice+Township%2C+Page+029/

In the 1953 history it says this: "In 1888, she [Alma Hanson] was married to Berry Johnson, who had filed on land in Rice, but gave up his right and filed on land in ...section 19 of Willow Lake [Township]." Records posted show he did file a Tree Claim in Rice Township and gave up his right to it sometime after 1899.

Just read the posts in answer to the previous question - thank you!

1910 Map * Willow Lake Township, Rolette county ND -- John Siem and Adam Siem have land here. You can see Barry Samson land in Section 19, Township 163N Range 73W.

Here is the link to the US Census in 1900 for Gust Johnson.

http://search.ancestrylibrary.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=MNstatecen&h=4632372&indiv=try&o_vc=Record:OtherRecord&rhSource=6224

In 1910 he owns land in Section 17 Oxford Township Rolette County according to the 1910 atlas.

http://www.historicmapworks.com/Map/US/501985/Oxford+Township++Page+045/Rolette+County+1910/North+Dakota/

In 1915, Gust Johnson appears in Holms Township Rolette County.

http://search.ancestrylibrary.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&MSAV=1&msT=1&gss=angs-g&gsfn=Gust&gsln=Johnson&msrpn__ftp=Rolette+County%2c+North+Dakota%2c+USA&msrpn=2555&msrpn_PInfo=7-|0|1652393|0|2|3248|37|0|2555|0|0|&MSFMC=1&catBucket=rstp&uidh=y43&pcat=ROOT_CATEGORY&h=2681737&db=NDstatecen&indiv=1&ml_rpos=4

Not sure if there is a connection here or not.

Right, we're not sure there's a connection. We're poking at the May 1882 record for Borge Justesen Siem registering in the parish to leave Eid; and the matching emigration registration for the same young man leaving from Ålesund 04 May 1882, and the seemingly matching immigration arrival record for Borre T Sieon (could read Borre J) landing in New York 25 May 1882. If - IF - he has a brother in Rolette county, North Dakota, that's food for thought.

I am going to go to Norway Digital Archives and try to find Just's birth record, maybe not tonight - it's late.

brejohns, Thanks for the Gust Johnson additions. Just a note about format - Ancestry links won't work unless a person is a subscriber, which most Norway Heritage researchers aren't. Transcriptions are great (copy and paste the information into this thread), and also Family Search links should presumably work for everybody. The Ancestry links are also making this page go wildly wide and unwieldy and hard to read. Sorry.

See page 4 and here for the birth record for Just

Well Just Justsen was born in April, but as near as I can tell it was April, 1865. See #13

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=6385&idx_id=6385&uid=ny&idx_side=-27

The two of them in the census. Borre and Just

Digging throough Ancestry.com, I come up with this for Adam Seim. Looks like he is really Adam Sime and maybe not related.

Adam Ellendson Sime
Birth Dec 1863 in Norway
Death 21 May 1916 in Rolette County, North Dakota

Married to
Bertha Undie
Birth Jan 1871 in Norway
Death 1912 in Willow Lake, Rolette, North Dakota

Just Justesen was born in April. A long shot, but haven't been able to rule out the possibility that Gust could be Just.

Probably belongs to this family in the 1865 Norway census:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=5&filnamn=f61417&gardpostnr=152&personpostnr=701&merk=701#ovre

John E. Seim's birthdate from the N.D. Public Death Index:
21 Jan 1866 so he just misses the census.

The chronology listed by JaneC is a great summary. You asked "when" the taxes were paid by Thos C Flynn. This is on the tax statement for the year 1897 page 201. Barney Johnson is crossed out and Thos C Flynn is written above the name of the land owner for Section 1 in Township 159 Range 71. Taxes of $10.87 were paid on January 4, 1898 by Thos C Flynn.

It is interesting that Borre settled in Willow Lake Township and Gust Johnson moved to Holmes Township as these townships border each other. I asked my husband (he does have a very good memory) if anyone ever spoke of Borre Johnson's family. He said that none of the family members mentioned or referred to Borre's siblings. However, Borre did die in 1914 so some of the children were not very old and may not have had heard much history. Do we have a death date for Gust Johnson?

Interesting to note that the 1930 US Census for John Seim in Holmes Township is only 2 miles from where our farm is today. The son Arthur (age 22) farmed the land until his death. The Dunseith History Book lists John Seim - Homesteader with this information.

"Looking for homestead land, John Seim left his native state of Iowa to come to ND. He left Iowa in June, 1900, coming to St. John by train. He came to his brother, Adam Sime, who had squatted on land in Willow Lake Township in 1897.

After looking for several weeks he chose Section 25 Township 163N Range 73W, now part of the International Peace Garden. After making a small clearing for a cabin, he walked to St. John to catch the train to Devils Lake to file, which was July 3, 1900. After proving up in 1903 he sold his household furnishings to the late Henry Miller, another homesteader for $7.50. He then went back to Iowa. There he met Ingrid Espe, who became his wife in 1906. In the spring of 1908 they moved to ND and located in Holmes Township Section 29-163-72. He still owned the homestead land until in 1931 when it was sold to the state for the Peace Garden.

While clearing land close to where the Chapel is now, located in the Peace Garden, a forest ranger and a mounted policeman came along and asked him if he would clear the land six rods wide on the Canadian side, he could have the use of it. He asked them "Why?" They told him they wouldn't have to plow a fire guard every year. So for 30 years he had free rent and no taxes on the six acres of land.

He hauled the first load of grain from Little Prairie to St. John in the fall of 1900 for Joe Millang and Adam Sime, taking three days to make the trip.

John Seim was also the last one to deliver the last load of wheat to the Bottbreht Mill before the mill burned. That was in 1913. Interestingly the check was signed by the late Ole Evans.

The Seims had a family of three sons and a daughter: Arthur, Elvin, Morris and Bernice. Arthur married Eva Berube and they had three children, Edwin, Marion and Margaret. Morris married Victoria Smith and they had one daughter, Dorothy. With his second wife there four children: Shirley, John, Donna and Sheila. He passed away August, 1968. Elvin married Alice Miller.

Bernice married Archie Metcalfe and they had a son, Conrad. Archie passed away. Then Bernice married Elmer Lindberg."

Also in the history book under "Leslie Irving Sime" it only has a couple of sentences - "John E. Undi born 1844 died April 17, 1902, wife Bertha born 1834.

Adam Sime born 1862 died 1916, married Bertha Undi born 1871-1912. Adam homesteaded in Montana around Havre area anad there as a drought, so they moved to Cass County and lived for awhile, before coming to the Turtle Moutain area, and they homesteaded west of Kelvin in 1898. He was one of the first settlers to produce a load of wheat on Little Praire, and the first one to sell grain at St. John, ND. Children were: Ellend, Janet (Nettie), Leslie, Emily and Russell."

It appears "Seim" and "Sime" are interchanged quite often.
