I am looking for any Information on my great grandfather Marthin Christiansen. My Grandfather Meydel was born in Osso Norway. On Passenger ship he listed mother's name as Anna. The vitals I have are 1872 - 1925. I would appreciate any info.

Hi Linda, welcome to forum.

This could be your family in the 1910 Norwegian census. However Martin Kristiansen is apparently deceased by that time.

Hi. In the census jkmarler posted, Kristian, Paul, and Meidal all have seaman's occupations. Click on the Person No. to see more information about each person - Kristian in Canada, Paul in America, and Meidal in Australia. Is your Meydel born 19 October 1894?

Also Meidel is listed with religion as Methodist, so he may or may not appear in parish registers.

Here is the family (with Martin still living) in 1900. They are already outside of the state church --Lutheran--:

Age varies a bit but probably your Martin Kristiansen in the 1865 census:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=10&filnamn=f60231&gardpostnr=45&personpostnr=275&merk=275#ovre
Probably not

Martin died early in 1908, 23 on right hand page:
Kildeinformasjon: Aust-Agder fylke, Arendal by, Dødsfallsprotokoll 3 (SAK/1222-0001/H/Ha/L0003), 1908-1917, oppb: Statsarkivet i Kristiansand.
Permanent sidelenke: http://arkivverket.no/URN:sk_read/35295/11/

He is survived by widow Anne and 7 children and 1___? There is more of an entry would be best for someone with better Norwegian skills than mine to read.

Martin Kristiansen (Christiansen) and Anne Severine Aslaksdatter were married in Hisøy Nov 26 1886, #12.

Their first son Kristian Arnold was born in Drøbak #21.
(Here is noted that he moved to Arendal 1902.)

When Martin died in May 1908 it is noted that he recieved poor relief.

Hi again lindachristiansen, please say more about the person you know best (Meydel?) and also please explain the sources of your information.
That will be a big help. Thanks.

Thank you, thank you! Yes, I do believe that the information given to me is correct. My grandfather Meidel was born Oct 19, 1894. I have his occupation listed as a seaman, His older brother, Paul immigrated to America 1st, then sponsored my grandfather. I do not know where I got the death date of martin, or where I got the spelling of his name. I also did not know about Kristian Arnold. I have a photograph of the family with the names hand written by my father, who may have remembered exactly. However, the names do coincide with the information I have received here. I wish I could read Norwegian to better understand the censuses. Also I have many letters and postcards that would give my valuable info if I could just read them. I am new to this web page (came across it while looking up something about Norway.) How to give you the needed information? Do I just list everything I do know about Paul and Meydel. It would be a lot.

PS: Meydel immigrated to America on March 6, 1913. He is listed as a passenger on the Oceanic. He did not have to go through Ellis Island because His Brother Paul sponsored him. From there He took a train to Alabama. He and Paul found their wives there, then moved to San Francisco, along with my grandmother's brother Trygve Forland, who also was newly married. In San Francisco, Paul, Meydel, and Trygve found jobs as longshoremen. Later my grandparents and her brothers family and parents moved to Oakland across the bay,
leaving Paul and his family in San Francisco. My Grandfather died in in 1972, Trygve died in 1973, and Paul died in 1986.

List what you know about the photograph, color or b&w size, photo studio, any date approximation and the names. They might make more sense as we go.

If you search in the censuses you can select for the standard parts to be printed in English. They may not stay in English however. Copy & paste a line or two into Google translate and for these simple communications Google will usually do alright.

Hi Linda, thanks, that helps a lot.

You write "My grandfather Meidel was born Oct 19, 1894. I have his occupation listed as a seaman, His older brother, Paul .."

This confirms beyond doubt that the family posted here is "your" family.

Now you can scratch out the birth and death dates you have for Martin and use the findings from the forum. Maybe that was accidentally added from someone else in your tree. Who knows?

About understanding the Norwegian records, Jackie gave good advice. I'll try to add a little more (though I'm not expert). Notice dates are written day-month-year:
From the 1910 census, see the headings at the top of the column.
P.nr. - person number
H.nr. - house number
Navn - name
Alder/født - age/birth/ birth date
Fødested - birth place
Familiestilling - position within the family (son, daughter, etc)
Sivilstand - marital status
Yrke - occupation
Bostatus - residence status, living here or away (I think that's the meaning)

1910 Norway census
Arendal kjøpstad [city of Arendal], Aust-Agder, Norway
Anne Kristiansen born 08 August 1865 in Hiisø, husmoder (=housemother), enke (=widow), "Forsørges av sine barn" (= living dependent on her children)
Kristian Kristiansen born 16 August 1888 in Drøbak, son, ugift (=unmarried) occupation matros (which is a seaman's job title)
Paul Kristiansen born 30 January 1890 in Hiisø, son, ugift, occupation sjømand (a seaman's job title)
Bergljot Kristiansen born 21 December 1892 in Fjære, daughter, ugift, occupation tjenestepike (servant girl)
Meidel Kristiansen born 19 October 1894 in Hiisø, son, ugift, sjømand (seaman)
Osvald Kristiansen born 19 May 1896 in Arendal , son, ugift
Atle Kristiansen born 21 May 1898 in Arendal, son, ugift
Dorthea Kristiansen born 19 March 1900 in Arendal, daughter, ugift

In the 1900 census posted, your grandfather's name is Meidel Ander Kristiansen. So this is Meidel arriving at Ellis Island, below.

from Ellis Island website, passenger ship Oceanic arriving Ellis Island, New York, 1913:
(Passenger info for each passenger extends over two pages)

Manifest Line Number: 0006
Meidell Andor Christiansen

Ethnicity: Norway, Scandinavian
Last Place of Residence: Avendal, Norway [= Arendal]
Nearest relative in place whence he came: mother Anne Christiansen in Strømsbu Kreds ??, Arendal (I can't read it)
Whether ever in USA before? Yes, in 1912, and a note I can't read
Destination: Brooklyn, NY. Meidel is traveling to "brother Christian Christiansen" at 103 Summit in Brooklyn, New York
Description of Meidel: 5'10", fair complexion, blonde hair, blue eyes
Birthplace: Hiisø, Norway

Now that you have more of a hold on names and dates, you'll have fun finding out more about this family!

There's a Christian Arnold Christiansen with wife Anne in Brooklyn - you can check or someone can check census for address or World War I draft registration card for birth date to confirm (it will tell exact day-month-year of birth) - or I will later. A Christian Christiansen emigrates from Arendal to NY in 1907

Below, this is likely Meidel's younger brother Oswald
First Name: Oswald Christiansen
Ethnicity: Norway, Scandinavian
Last Place of Residence: Arendal, Norway
Date of Arrival: Oct 04, 1920
Age at Arrival: 24y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Frederik VIII
Port of Departure: Christiania
Manifest Line Number: 0018
Traveling to brother Christian Christensen at 514 48th Street, Brooklyn, NY
Nearest relative in place whence he came: mother Anna Christiansen, Aarbetjern, pr. Arendal, Norway

1900 census in Norway gives his name as Osvald Georg.
