Looking for descendents of John (Johan) Johansen born 1921..father was Anders Johansen. John married in Swansea Uk 1941 and had a son John, but later returned to Norway. At the time of his marriage he was a merchant seaman on MV Ferncourt.John divorced in the 1950's and possibly re-married.

Was Johan a seaman on Norwegian tanker MT Ferncourt owned by shipping company Fearnley & Astrup, Oslo?

It was attacked by German aircrafts outside Milford Haven July 7. 1941 but managed to get to Swansea where it was 10 mths for repair.
There were 410 Anders Johansen living in Norway acc. to the 1910 census.

This could be tricky without any further information.
Any idea of which part of Norway he came from? Do you have his exact birthdate?

Unfortunately, only information I have is from my mothers marriage certificate, which gives John Johansens age as 20 in December 1941, no other clues. Apparently he was in Oslo about 1947. Thankyou for your replies.

Unforunately I don't have exact date, just age at time of marriage in December 1941. the marriage certificate shows his father Anders Johansen as deceased .

Did the certificate give John's father's occupation?

The certificate showed John's father as deceased. Nothing positive to go on unfortunately. I know this is going to be very difficult, and appreciate your reply.

Did your parents divorce? Perhaps a record of that might be available...

Yes this is correct . My mother was Flavin. They later divorced as John returned to Norway. The divorce would have been before 1953, but don't know how I can get hold of divorce records.

Yes they did divorce after John returned to Norway, estimate the divorce to have been sometime before 1953. I assume he was still in Merchant Navy then. Possibly re-married himself.

Maybe David Yaw, a poster here at the forum, could help with information about divorce records in Britain. In US, its usually a county level record and information about them is available in most cases because of the need to make sure your bills are getting paid and that you draw the line clearly that you are no longer responsible for someone else's bills...

Fearnley & Astrup, Fearnley & Eger, same company and owner of MT (Motor Tanker) Ferncourt.
I would hope the crew list is saved in the archives.
After the ship was hit by 4 bombs, and a torpedo on port side that opened a big hole below the waterline, 2 foreigner were killed and one injured.
The captain recieved a letter from W. Churchill on behalf of king Edvard............
The story of the bombing of MT Ferncourt is ca 3/4 down page, click here

Because of that I hope the crew list is saved, it will give the homeplace of the crew.
Fearnley & Eger has a web site where you can "Kontakt" Contact them Link

The Norwegian National Archives have a register named 16/5 - Ferncourt. File 1940-1946. Crewlist 1943-1945.
This archive is restricted for 80 years (until 2026?), and therefore not widely available. For transparency, there must be an approval. Please contact the National Archives for further information.
