The problem is that it says Brother in Law.. Saul Jacobson, and Irving had no Brother.. At least not an older Brother.
Found a famely that matches in 1940, and i think its the wrong Irving..

Actually what it says is Saul Jacobson is a son -in-law which means he is married to a daughter of the head of the household Rebecca Jacobson and even if his last name is the same as Rebecca's he may or may not have any blood relationship. Rebecca is born in Roumania.

I think you need to take a hard look at Irving and Belle, this Irving may not be the Irving Jacobsen you are looking for.

To the poster do you have information about when Ingeborg left Norway and to whom she was coming in the US?

I dont think its the right Irving either, so it looks like a dead end in that case. She left Norway in 1907 With her father Karl Johan Andersen.
He went back a couple of years later after working as a policeman in NY. Then he had a new wife and a kid.

Passing the clothing store owned by Philip Greenberg at 219 Roebling st. early this mornlrg, Patrolman Daniel Hart of the Bedford ave. station, smelled gas. He forced open the door, and tracing fumes to a room in the rear of the store, he found Teddy, the Gxeenbergs" pet cat, overcome. On the second floor he found Greenberg, his wife, Jennie, and their 9-year-old daughter, Evelyn, unconscious in the gas-filled apart ment. Mr. and Mrs. Greenberg were quickly revived, but it was necessary to work over Evelyn nearly an hour. GAS VICTIM DIES Jacob Jacobson, 55, who lived in furnished room at 328 43d st., died today in; Kings County Hospital from accidental gas poisoning. He was found yesterday in his room, overcome by gas escaping from a Jet which had been accidentally left on (From The Brooklyn Daily Eagle 23 march 1929)

Sad but not enough information to rule him in or out. You may have to get the actual death certificate to do that.

At Ellis Island website I took a look at a couple of Jacob Jacobsen / Jacobson arriving 1902-1907

Arriving on Cymric 14 Sept 1902
Jacob Jacobsen aged 22, sailor, last residence Arendal; going to uncle in New York Bens Berntsen?* 643 Hicks St, Brooklyn

Arriving on Baltic, 9 Mar 1907
Jacob Jacobsen age 28 b. Stavanger, destination dittoed from previous entry: friend O.C. Hilt (or Helt, Kilt) y16 8th Ave Richmond San Franciscio; left blank--have you ever been in US before; arrived with $50.

Arriving on SS California 27 Aug 1907
Jacob Jacobsen age 31 b. Norway last permanent address Arendal; nearest relative is grandfather Peter Petersen in Arendal; final destination either Boston or Philadelphia; Yes in Newark 1899-1904; passage here paid by owner of the ship; going to join the Norwegian steamer "Brighton", A.F. Flaveness Co. Christiania, 5' 7", blond

Arriving on Oceanic, 27 March 1902
Jacob Jacobson age 21, single, laborer, arrived with no money; destination uncle Corlis Clausen in Tacoma, Wash.

*this name was written the same time as Jacob's entry--ink is the same darkness as the rest of the entry--but is positioned between his and the next person's record.

Since Irving was in an orphanage in 1930 perhaps he was adopted by someone and underwent a name change as a result?

That should be him, his famely is from Egersund, beside Stavanger. The others dont match.
But i cant get any closer to Evelyn and Irving.. But he was about 15 when he was in an orphange, was it normal to get adopted in that age? Thought it was hard for the older children to get a new famely..

Here is the Ancestry.com record for that Jacob Jacobsen.

New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Jacob Jacobsen
Arrival Date: 9 Mar 1907
Birth Date: abt 1879
Birth Location Other: stroanger
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Scandinavian
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Baltic

Looking at the original manifest, it appears to me that the person directly above him is Jorgen Sandberg. he is listed as an architect, travelling to San Francisco, whether before in United States, answer yes and place San Francisco, going to join a friend or relative, answer lists friend O C Holt or Halt. For Jacob all of the above answers are dittoed. I would be a little suspecious that the dittos really applied to Jacob. Perhaps a mistake was made since Jacob doesn't seem to fit the dittoes very well. Here is the entry on Jorgen.

New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Jörgen Sandberg
Arrival Date: 9 Mar 1907
Birth Date: abt 1859
Birth Location Other: fredrcksted
Age: 48
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Scandinavian
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Baltic

Well, generally that's true today but back in the day, don't necessarily think so. I've heard stories of folks being adopted to provide "additional" labor on the farm or whatever, right off "orphan trains" and the like. Not every person's motive in adopting is pure.

Picking up late on this thread, and not sure if this is helpful ....

Jakob Jakobson (transcribed as Janob Jakobson), farmer, age 28 departed Liverpool 27 February 1907 aboard the Baltic. The names next to him on the manifest are George Sandberg (??), Farmer and Simon (??) Gjerderik, Labourer, but unclear if they were travelling together. All three arrived Liverpool via Hull.

Jacob Jacobsen age 19 single, male, labourer, departed Liverpool on 27 March 1907 for New York aboard the Baltic. Rasmus Jacobsen age 17 is the next name on the manifest and was apparently travelling with him. They came to Liverpool via Hull. I guess they would have arrived New York around 2 or 3 April ??
