I don't recall seeing that 1930 census posted? Or the name of the orphanage? Different institutions had different purposes and missions - for example, at least one place I know of in that area was a home for blind and disabled children. Not saying this is the case for Irving, just that a general discussion sometimes misses specific possibilities. |

So you know the Norwegian family. Do you know his parents' names? Siblings? Full birth date? These can be clues to identifying Jacob's fate in the USA. Your focus is on the children, apparently? It's possible - maybe - that his death or whereabouts might help fill in their stories as well. In any case, it never hurts to throw a little information at a genealogy problem.

The above story certainly matches the death record for Jacob Jacobsen posted by lyndal40. If you order a copy of the original, it might state his parents' names or his birthplace or his next of kin, and if so, since you know these, you can rule this Jacob in or out.
Note that the gas victim is said to have been born about 1874. As a roomer in a boarding house? (which he seems to be?) he may not have been well known by the person giving the information to the police and/or newspaper.
Look again at this: 1925 NY state census Assembly District 09, in Brooklyn, Kings, New York Jacob Jacobson 45, roomer, born about 1880, in US 25 years [immigrated about 1900] Same residence / or boarding house: Evelyn Jacobson 13, born about 1912 Irving Jacobson 11, born about 1914
What is the street address? If it's different, shows nothing, but if it's the same as the gas death...at 328 43rd Street... |

Arriving on the Saint Paul in 1902:
Manifest of Alien Immigrants, line 2 Jacob S. Jacobsen, age 24, Norwegian and last residence Norway, married [sic] Departing Southampton on the Saint Paul Arriving Ellis Island New York 19 April 1902 Destination Philadelphia, passage paid by ship owners Whether ever before in USA: Yes, as a sailor Whether going to join a relative: Holxxx, Philadelphia Norw [hard to read -- ship owner-company name?]
Somewhat similar to Jacob Jacobsen age 31 arriving 1907 on the SS California passage paid by ship owners - posted by jkmarler
I find it hard to imagine a man in a rooming house in Brooklyn in 1925 having a destination other than the East Coast when immigrating - but as we've all learned, one never knows. |

I dont think its the right Irving either, so it looks like a dead end in that case. She left Norway in 1907 With her father Karl Johan Andersen. He went back a couple of years later after working as a policeman in NY. Then he had a new wife and a kid.

So here's the extra note on Inga in the 1910 census: "Antatt oppholdssted: Brooklyn"
Actually she didn't travel with her father Karl to America but came to him already in America. Inga traveled with her cousin Oleivine Nielsen, what happened to Oleivine?
Did Inga go back to Norway with her father and later return to America on her own? Here is a family in the 1910 Norwegian census that makes me ask the question: http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01036558000354 |

Thanks, so no direct link - but the addresses are not too far apart.
1910 Norway Census posted by jkmarler says Inga Marie Andersen "Antatt oppholdssted: Brooklyn" Andrea Andersen born 12.07.1906 "Fødested: Brooklyn" (everyone else born Norway) Einar Andersen "Antatt oppholdssted: Canada" Alexander Andersen "Antatt oppholdssted: New York"
So three members of this family are living abroad. |

Part of The History of Longmeadow" dealing with East Longmeadow:
"The “East Village” section of Longmeadow split off from the “West Village” in 1894 to form the separate town now called East Longmeadow. At that time the population of East Longmeadow numbered about 1600, leaving what we now think of as the town of Longmeadow with a population of about 570. East Longmeadow by this time was an economically and ethnically diverse community with many businesses and industries, a busy railroad yard and a dozen operational red sandstone quarries. A map of Longmeadow from that year shows approximately 100 homes, most concentrated up and down Longmeadow Street." |

Great, that confirms the candidate lyndal40 posted on page 1, who married Stephen Rice.
