I'm seeking information on a Tellef Gunerius Tellefsen born abt May1878 he came from Oyestad, Aust-Adger, Norway. He may have settled in either Brooklyn, NY or Staten Island (Richmond) NY. He may have been married to either a Jennie or Berta, and may have had children named Gil and Goodie. His siblings were Johan Martin Tellefsen (gone by "Martin) , Anders Anton Tellefsen and Anna Marie Knudsen. I know about the other siblings, but cannot find much on Tellef Gunerius Tellefsen. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. jcravi@aol.com

Here is your Tellef's confirmation #9. His birthdate, given in the confirmation is 5 May 1876 not May 1878, a factual difference which might make your search easier or more successful:

Source information: Aust-Agder county, Øyestad, Parish register (official) nr. A 17 (1887-1896), Confirmation records 1891, page 163.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=851&idx_id=851&uid=ny&idx_side=-166

Where did you get the information you have about "may have been married to either a Jennie or Berta and may have had children named Gil and Goodie?" Were these observations a family tradition or something else?

Hi - do you mind helping us understand, What is the reasoning that your Tellef is in New York? What sources or family stories led you to considering that possibility?
http://www.norwayheritage.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3702

One reason I ask is that you seem rather tentative about him ("may have been married to either a Jennie or Berta and may have had children named Gil and Goodie?") so it may be helpful if the forum looks at the evidence together with you.

Here is poster's Tellef in the 1900 Norwegian census, he's a sailor away on a trip to "Cap Werd Forenede stater" Cape Verde?:

3633 Tellef Gunerius Tellefs. m f Paa reise til Cap Werd Forenede Stater s ug Sømand, Styrmand 1875 t n s

No Tellef in the 1910 Norwegian census with his birthdate of 5 May 1876.

This is likely the birth of the Tellef in the census records (US and Norway) posted by lyndal40.
Tellef, born 13 May 1878 in Froland, Aust-Agder, father is Tellef Olsen.
SOURCE: Aust-Agder county, Froland, Parish register copy nr. B 9 (1875-1893), Birth and baptism records 1878, page 15.

1900 census in Øyestad for jcravi's Tellef, cited by jkmarler earlier:
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=10&filnamn=f00920&gardpostnr=657&personpostnr=3632&merk=3632#ovre

His parents are Tellef Knudsen and Gunhild Andersdatter.
Øyestad is a former municipality in Aust-Agder county, Norway. It is located in the present-day municipality of Arendal

Although that first candidate was not your Tellef, jcravi, this one probably is:

Ellis Island, New York, USA
IMMIGRATION RECORD
Sailing on the SS United States
Departing Christiansand 08 May 1907
arriving New York 28 May 1907
Tellef G. Tellefsen, age 31, seaman
born about 1876 Norway
Last Permanent Residence: illegible --stad Arendal
Passage paid by myself
Whether ever before in the United States? Yes, in NY 1903-1907
Whether going to join a relative or friend: Scandinavian Sailor's Home in Brooklyn
Birthplace: Øiestad, Arendal

Check out the Ellis Island site for more records that could be for the same man. For example:

First Name: Tellef
Last Name: Tellefsen
Ethnicity: Norway, Scandinavian
Last Place of Residence: Areudal, Norway
Date of Arrival: Oct 08, 1915
Age at Arrival: 42y
Gender: M
Marital Status: M <------married
Ship of Travel: Bergensfjord
Port of Departure: Kristiansand, Norway
Manifest Line Number: 0007
....says he's traveling to NY to join a Norwegian ship

This might be his first time sailing to USA, from Ellis Island website:

First Name: Tellef
Last Name: Tellefsen
Ethnicity: Norway, Norwegian
Last Place of Residence: Arendal
Occupation: Sailor, traveling to Scandinavian Sailor's Home in Brooklyn
Whether ever before in the USA: NO
Date of Arrival: Sep 02, 1904

Manifest Line Number: 0001

Italian Genealogical Group has indexes of marriages, births, deaths, and naturalizations in the New York City metropolitan area (Brooklyn, Queens, King, Richmond, Manhattan)
Is not limited to Italians. Tellef Tellefsen appears in several lists but without the needed information to identify him as "yours." Copies of the original records can be
ordered and would probably tell more about each Tellef.

Thank you for all of your efforts in researching my family. It is greatly appreciated.
My mother used to speak of having an Uncle Tom, her mother's brother, I'm assuming this is Tellef. I thought she may have mentioned that he lived in Staten Island, but I may be wrong. I found an old Memorial Book for my grandmother's funeral services, and in it was the names Tante Jennie, Uncle Tom, Goodie and Gil. There was also a Tante Berta Tellefsen, but no other information. I believe the Tellef in Staten Island was born in May 1878 and not 1876 which would be my Tellef, and he was a sailor.
Hopefully, I can find some answers someday. Thanks again.
