HI,

My great grandfather's sister died at young age of 16-17 years in 1905. A relative said that her death date was probably 4/14/1905. She lived in Hurdal on the Moen farm (according to 1900 census). Did Norway have death certificates back then?

Actually it is Nils Garsjomoen. I have not found his ship record yet. Martin was his brother that supposedly came later.

Nils Olsen Garsjĝmoen b. Oct. 28. 1880 "Utflyttar" Migrant and "Arbeider ugift" unmarried laborer left Hurdal Oct. 7. 1901 but was rec.1902.
He is not rec. leaving Oslo but in Hurdal link

So Nils paid for Martins ticket.

Is there a way to find out what ship Nils left on? I have had no luck, but I am not sure if he used "Moen" which is the last name that Martin and Nils used here in the States.

Cant find him leaving Oslo, sorry
perhaps he changed ship in England, in Hull or London.
Or more likely;
SS Hekla (2) dep. Oslo Nov. 7 1901 and arrived N.Y. Nov. 21 and dep. Oslo Dec. 28. and arr. N.Y. Jan. 16. 1902.

From what my cousin told me that Nils went to live somewhere else in Norway before emigrating - had to earn money

Since Nels became a naturalized US citizen, you could order his naturalization papers, which should or might tell his date of arrival and ship he came on. Found Martin Moen (date of birth 21 Feb 1886) arrived USA 1906 and date of naturalization 18 Nov 1912 Circuit Court, Dane county, Wisconsin and also Martin US passport application 1920. A naturalization index card for a Nels Moen in Darlington, Lafayette, Wisconsin (Lafayette county circuit court) dated 06 Dec 1921 has no further information.

1910 US census
Stoughton Ward 3, Dane, Wisconsin
Nels Moen 29 <---------------------- to USA 1903
Lillie A Moen 19
Martin Moen 23 brother, to USA 1905

1918 World War I Draft Registration
Nels O Moen
born 28 October 1880
naturalized US citizen
residing Stoughton, Dane, Wisconsin
wife Lilie
His signature: Nels O Moen

1920
Dunkirk, Dane, Wisconsin
Nels Moen 39 [36] <------ to USA 1902, became naturalized US citizen 1912
Lillie Moen 29
Bertha E Moen 3 years 9 months

1930 US census
Madison, Dane, Wisconsin
Nels Moen 49 <--------------- to USA 1901
