My grandfather, Albert Einar Amundsen came from Norway as a small boy with his father, Einar, and his brother. I was able to find their names on a (I think) 1917 passenger list to New York.
I wanted to keep searching for their lineage in Norway, but I don't know how to search. I don't have much information and this may be my problem.
I'm one of many people who've been told we are related to Roald Amundsen however my instinct, with just the little I've been able to find, is not true. There are a lot of Amundsens out there. I would love however to find our family lines and go to visit some of my distant relatives in Norway.
Can anyone shed light on how to go about searching? |

More information is always helpful. Where did they live in the United States. When were they born etc. If you have any idea of a area in Norway from which they came that would be of major use. |

Anton has given you a good first--gather information from here first on your grandfather. I'd add these:
1. Start with what you know already. You are more expert on your grandfather right now than anybody else.
2. Name, a date, and a place are three things which usually unlock everything.
3. Arm yourself with family information from America. |

You do not know if Albert Einar was born after 1910? (Norway has a 1910 census) Do you know the name of his brother?

Looking at the various pieces of data on Einar Amundsen on Ancestry.com, I keep coming back to this family. Howevr this Albert was born in 1908 in America as was his sister. But here it is anyway. Einar was born abt 1874 in Norway and immigrated in 1893 and Married in 1899. Some of this fits, most does not.
1910 United States Federal Census Name: Albert Amundson Age in 1910: 2 Birth Year: abt 1908 Birthplace: Illinois Home in 1910: Chicago Ward 28, Cook, Illinois Race: White Gender: Male Relation to Head of House: Son Marital Status: Single Father's Name: Einar Amundson Father's Birthplace: Norway Mother's name: Lomina Amundson Mother's Birthplace: Norway Neighbors: Household Members: Name Age Einar Amundson 36 Lomina Amundson 32 Nora Amundson 11 Albert Amundson 2 |

From looking at that family earlier, I think that Albert is memorialized on Find a Grave, died 1987, wife Mildred, mother Tomine. This is the only Einar- Albert combo I found. Need the OP to explain who she is talking about, what is immigration record she found, when her Albert was born, etc |

The family in 1900 in Chicago with brother Alfred. If this is your famly there are a large number of Family Trees on Ancestry.com that have the brothers as having been born in Kopervik, Rogaland, Norway.
See number 23.

Your right on two counts Jane, first we need the OP to tell us what she knows and if we are on the right path and secondly the Family Tree on Ancestry with the most information has Albert with the middle name of Edward not Einar but with a wife named Mildred Anna Monson. That fits your informaton well.
Albert Edward Amundsen Birth 11 JAN 1908 in Illinois Death 30 Apr 1987 in Stoughton, Dane, Wisconsin, United States of America
Mildred Anna Monson Birth 7 AUG 1909 in Wisconsin Death 11 Sep 1996 in Stoughton, Dane, Wisconsin, United States of America |

Yes, that is the FAG data. Einar on FAG born 06 March 1873 died 31 March 1960, buried Chicago; Tomine born 21 Jan 1877, died 11 June 1916, buried Chicago. At least her death date fits with opening statement, of a father but not mother traveling w Albert in 1917. |

Actually she did not specifically say Albert was born in Norway, or where or when he was born, though born in Norway seemed implied. Maybe she means a different family, or she found wrong people, or found them traveling home from a visit?

quote: But he is born in Illinois not in Norway. So who did OP find coming to US in 1917?
Well there was an Able Bodied Seaman named Einar Amundsen who arrived in New York in 1917. I would doubt that that person is the same as the one living in Chicago.
New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 Name: Einar Amundsen Arrival Date: 2 Jun 1917 Birth Date: abt 1875 Age: 42 Gender: Male Ethnicity/ Nationality: Scandinavian Port of Departure: Namsos Port of Arrival: New York, New York Ship Name: Ranenfjord |

Recalling my look at these folks yesterday, I think Einar's brother Alfred married a Johanne; they had a son Magnus(?); the brothers lived together later; son Albert had a younger brother Walter (USA version of the name Valdemar); Walter apparently died 1977. Tomine "Mina" was born Larsen I think.
Title of thread says Albert was from Norway - so may I correct my previous statement that place of birth was only implied. Wonder if that was a slip, and we have right family...
An online conversation in Norwegian called "Forfedrar til Hans Krag Juuhl/Juul/Juel" calls Einar's mother Christiane "Janna" Elisabeth Juuhl. I think Albert's sister Nora is "Jannette Nora." |
