Hello!
I'm a newbie, and I don't understand Norwegian. The Norwegian/English dictionary has been ordered but has not yet arrived.
I am searching for children of Knudt Iverson Offerdal, born 2 Aug 1852 in Laerdal, the son of Iver Olsen Offerdal and Berthe Kristine Andfindsdatter also of Laerdal. He came to the United States in 1873, and in 1880 was living in Wahpeton, Richland, North Dakota, with a wife named Erma or Enna. In 1885, the wife had disappeared, and he was living alone across the river in Breckenridge, Wilkin, Minnesota. In 1990, he could be found in Tacoma, Washington; in 1903, Everett, Washington, and in 1921, became a naturalized citizen in Seattle, Washington. I haven't found any death record.
Knudt is probably my great-grandfather, but I haven't proven it yet. He had one daughter out of wedlock in 1873 in Norway named Anna. I'm guessing as to the rest of the name. Perhaps Anna Knudtsdatter Offerdahl or Anna Knudtsdatter Seim? Her mother was Metta Kristine Tomasdatter Seim, who later married Ove Tomasen, Haereid. His second child, that I know about at least, was my grandfather, Frank O. Haraldson. Frank was born in Wahpeton, Richland, North Dakota in 1885, and was living with his mother, Gena Olsen, in Breckenridge, Wilkin, Minnesota, at the time of the 1885 Minnesota state census.
Because I don't know Knudt's daughters second and third names for sure, I can't find her anywhere in USA records, but I know that she came to the US in 1893. She was born on 6 Jul 1873, just prior to Knudt leaving for America. I would like to find her descendants to compare DNA with my uncle through the Family Finder test.
Thank you to anyone who can help me! My 90-yr-old uncle and 95-yr-old mother are trying to find out who they are before they die.

Here's a brief obit of your grandfather, published in the Fergus Falls (MN) Journal, Tues. Jan 21, 1975; pg 2, col 3:
Frank O. Haraldson Dies
Frank O. Haraldson, 90, formerly of Breckenridge, died Monday at his home in LeSeuer. Services will be held Wednesday at 1p.m. at the Zion Church of Christ, LeSeuer. Burial will also be in LeSeuer.
Surviving are three children; one sister Mrs. Daniel (Anna) Wilcott, Fergus Falls; and a brother, George, Fargo.

Annas mother Methe Christine Thomasdatter was born Nov 7 1847 and baptized Dec 5 1847, see #182.
Her parents were Thomas Johannesen, Seim and Anna Baardsdatter.
They were married Nov 23 1834, see #44.
Thomas father was Johanes Andersen, Seim and Annas father was Baard Halvorsen, Hofland.

Annas father Knud Iversen, Offerdal was born Aug 2 1852 and baptized Aug 22 1852, see #118.
His parents were Iver Olsen, Offerdal and Kistine Anfindsdatter.
They were married May 23 1841, see #14.
Ivers father was Ole Andreasen, Natvig and Kistines father was Anfind Pedersen, Offerdal.

| Has a record been found for a baptism for Frank Haraldson? There was probably a Norwegian-Lutheran church close to his birth location and that is where I would look if I were you. Lutheran ministers usually made note of the names of both parents in the church records - even if the child was born out of wedlock. |

| Good idea! I don't know if he was baptized before his mother remarried or not. His birth certificate was burned in the ever popular "fire in the court house." I'll check with relatives to find out. |

You've listed that Frank Haraldson was born "Wahpeton, Richland, North Dakota in 1885, and was living with his mother, Gena Olsen, in Breckenridge, Wilkin, Minnesota, at the time of the 1885 Minnesota state census.
So you'd have at least two areas to search for church records of a possible baptism. Careful study of maps may also show other congregations nearby which happen to fall just across a county line... Check with the book "Norsk Lutherske menigheter i Amerika 1843-1916" by O. M. Norlie (et. al.) which can be borrowed on microfilm #1035697 Items 1-2 through the LDS Family History Library catalog and sent to a LDS Family History Center of your choice near you.
I borrowed that microfilm in the past to learn of the Norwegian-Lutheran churches near where some of my immigrant ancestors lived. I then identified the church still in the area and found that they had later merged into one church and held the very oldest church records in the pastor's safe. I had to get the permission of the church council to view the records and had to take a summer vacation to travel to that state and be able to study them in person. The oldest records were kept in Norwegian and I was glad that I had already practiced in the church records of several parts of Norway before I encountered them for no one else at the church could read them past the names. Yes, my questions were greatly answered by that very useful trip.
Most Lutheran babies are baptised within a few days or weeks of birth. |

Perhaps Knudt lived in Wilikin County as well. Here is a candidate from the 1885 Minnesota Census.
