Good, maybe we can add a little data on the family from Norway then. Here are two entries from the Norwegian Census. In 1865 it looks as if Nils (Niels) has a different wife than in the 1875 Census posted earlier by Jane. However the birth years 1843 are the same for the two ladies, so is it just that they used different names in the two different census.

Could be.
"Christy - yanna" (Christiane) "Yanna" (Janna)
Maybe a Norwegian cousin of Julie's was searching for info here: http://forum.arkivverket.no/topic/176305-familien-amundsen-juuljuuhl/
Family Search Family Tree includes parents for Tomine, Lars Erikson b 1825 and Serina Mikalsdotter https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/99C2-FBR
Here is the family the Family Search tree is claiming for Tomine: http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=7&filnamn=f61124&gardpostnr=70&personpostnr=413&merk=413#ovre
1865 Norway Census at Haga farm in Haaland, Rogaland Lars Eriksen 40 b Haalands Serina Mikkelsd. 36 b Haa Enok 12 Martin 10 Tollev 8 Lars 6 Ole G age 1 Elen O age 14 Serina age 3 living with them are probably Serina's parents: Mikkel Sebjĝrnsen 67 b Helland Taletta Klausd 64 b Egersund
On first glance (not having checked Tomina birth) this looks credible, as an 1893 immigration for Tomine Larsen age 16 is traveling with Josephine Larsen 22 - and this family has a daughter Karen Josephine b 1871.
New York, Passenger Lists (Ancestry) Name: Tomine Larson Arrival Date: 22 Jun 1893 Birth Date: abt 1877 Age: 16 Years 5 Months Gender: Female Ethnicity/ Nationality: Norwegian Port of Departure: Christiansand, Norway Port of Arrival: New York, New York Ship Name: Italia |

My grandfather, Albert Einar Amundsen came from Norway as a small boy with his father, Einar, and his brother. I was able to find their names on a (I think) 1917 passenger list to New York.
I wanted to keep searching for their lineage in Norway, but I don't know how to search. I don't have much information and this may be my problem.
I'm one of many people who've been told we are related to Roald Amundsen however my instinct, with just the little I've been able to find, is not true. There are a lot of Amundsens out there. I would love however to find our family lines and go to visit some of my distant relatives in Norway.
Can anyone shed light on how to go about searching?
Since you do not have much information I wonder if it is a misunderstanding.
Your Albert Einar was born in America, father Einar Waldemar Juul Amundsen, son of Merchant Nils Amundsen and Kristiane Elisabeth Juuhl. Einar also had a brother Alfred Amandius Emil Amundsen born June 23. 1874 mentioned on page 1.
Both em. to America, but when Einar Waldemar was confirmated Oct. 9. 1887 their father Nils was already in America, see parents right page for Einar Waldemar #8 .."Handelsmand" Merchant Nils Amundsen, America...

Interesting Family Tree on Ancestry.com which appears to be owned by the same person who posted on Digitalarkivet Forum found by Jane . That is Halvor Skurtveit. On the Ancestry Tree he uses the username and address of
halsku Fjell kommune (Sotra), near Bergen, Norway
In his listing of the wife of Nils Amundsen he lists her name to include both the names found in the 1865 and 1875 Norwegian Census.

I love it! Reading through all of these posts is so great to see!
In talking with my mom, she remembers my grandfather (Albert) sister and brother (Nora and Walter). She did remember that my great grandfather (Einar) was widowed but remembers my dad (Albert's son David) calling his Einar's wife "Tasha Hanna". I have a feeling as a child he probably heard the name and pronounced it differently but my mom seems to think that my great grandfather was maybe with another woman at that time.
I'm hoping that if I look up Nils Amundsen I'll be able to find more consistent connections. I wasn't able to follow all of the posts, because some of the ages and names didn't quite fit together.
Thank you SO MUCH for posting all these! It is overwhelming to see how much help others (that have experience in this) can be of such great help in such little time!!
I'm so excited about my Norwegian roots and will keep on searching.

Hello Julie, yes in the way that we went about hunting down your ancestors the results can be a little confusing. However I think the family line from you to your family in Norway is fairly clear.
Julie Faher David Amundsen born in Stoughton Wisconsin died in Petaluma California Father Albert Amundsen born in Chicago Illinois died in Wisconsin Father Einar Amudnsen born in Norway died in Illinois wife Tomina Larsdatter All well documented above and probably known by you,
Father of Einar is
Nils Amundsen Birth 1837 in Bjerkreim, Rogaland, Norway
Mother is
Christiane (Janna) Elisabeth Juuhl Birth 1843 in Brattholmen, Fjell, Hordaland, Norway Death 1905 in Kopervik, Rogaland, Norway
The ancestors of Nils Amundsen are currently a mystery however the ancestors of Christiane Elisabeth Juuhl are well know and well covered on the internet. One of the best Famly Trees for this famly is on Ancestry.com which I think you may have access to since there are two trees on there that seem to belong to either you or a relative. If you have access to Ancestry go to the Family Tree section and type in the name of Christiane Juuhl and go to the tree owned by halsku. There you will find your family down to your great-grandfather Einar Amudnsen. You can then trace the Juuhl family back to the early 1600's in Norway. |
