I believe this is her in the Census of 1900 and 1910

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01037112000671

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01036465001563

married Johannes Torgerson Nessa (Næsse) in USA as his second wife.

After Nessa died in 1940 in Long Lake Ill., USA , Ranghild supposedly went back to Stavanger, Norway and died about 1942.

Is a 1942 death record in Norway available and, if so, can someone look this record up?

Thanks for any assistance

Undoubtedly the records from 1942 (both parish registers and probate dødsfallprotokol) were kept but they are unlikely to be available online due to privacy considerations. You may have to contact the archives to see if they would search the records for you.

If Ragnhild returned "home" to Nes in Hallingdal, she may appear in the in-the-process-of-being-published Nes bygdebøker. I believe Devegge area is included in Book 4 in the series, I'll look at my next opportunity. You could see if she has a headstone in the DIS Gravminner i Norge database online.

She doesn't appear in the index to Hallingen, the publication of the Hallinglag of America as Ragnhild Øye or Nessa.

You are certain that she returned? Traveling to Norway anytime after April 1940 was exceedingly dangerous especially for those coming from America. I've heard of some local folk --civilians-- who were traveling in Norway at the outbreak of hostilities but were held captive for the duration because they were American.

Obviously going to be more of a story here but this record has Ragnhild being naturalized in US on 5 Nov 1942 (even though it says "Cancelled".)

Here is the baptism of the Ragnhild you have identified, second from top on the right hand page:

Source information: Buskerud county, Nes in Nes, Parish register copy nr. I 2 (1872-1912), Birth and baptism records 1885, page 32.

Thanks for all your work.

I have been unable to find her in the US after 1940 and the info I have from one source is that she returned to Norway.

You are correct in that was dangerous to travel in the early 40's

Great information, I did not have the other records

The story about the family is in Book 2 of Gards og Slekts Historie for Nes i Hallingdal, pg 398.
Ragnhild was the 6th of 12 children of her parents. It says she came to US in 1921 (differs from the census listing of 1923), that she married Johannes Nessa from Nessa in Ryfylke, he was a building carpenter, they had no children and he died about 1940. She came back to Norway in 1946 and died in 1950 and is buried in Oslo (actually in the same plot as her sister Borghild Hjorth). No exact date of her death is recorded in the book but the burial record in Oslo says she was buried 11 Nov 1950.

Here is the record of burials in that plot in Gravesetern i Oslo Kommune:
Gravnr: 14.005.00.025 Nordstrand kirkegård
Ragnhild Nessa
Ukjent - Ukjent
Gravlagt: 11.11.1950

Borghild Hjorth
24.06.1892 - 07.12.1967
Gravlagt: 14.05.1968

Per Staff
30.12.1914 - 03.03.2004
Gravlagt: 14.05.2004

Astri Ingeborg Staff
20.08.1916 - 02.08.2008
Gravlagt: 12.09.2008

The agreement on the "lease" of the plot goes to 2028.

Looking at the spelling here it is not surprising that she is hard to find. However I think there is a good chance that this is her. However according to this John is still alive in 1940 at least for the Census. The date on this census page is April 24.
