I am looking for whatever I can find out about my grandparents. Olaf A. Nilson married Oline Olsen(?) about 1900 in Norway. They emigrated to Canwood, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1906, gained naturaralization in Canada in 1911. Moved to Duhamel, Alberta about 1919. Olaf died in 1921 and Oline died in 1950. They had 5 children, the first born in Norway.

Do you know where this information comes from? Olaf A. Nilson b. in Norway Feb. 23. 1879. Father Andish Nilson.
Andish, perhaps Anders.
On Norwegian, printed in the following manner; Olaf Andersen born Feb. 23. 1879, father Anders Nilsen.

Hi, paulinebeattie, as you can see, dates of birth (or approximate) will help to identify your family and distinguish them from other, similar people. Also, since a child was born to Olaf and Oline in Norway, his name and date of birth also confirm which couple in Norway is yours. Make sense? The key to finding the origin (birth record) of your people in Norway is to develop as much info as possible in Canada - and give the forum the benefit of those clues by sharing them.
The following Find a Grave memorial might be for your grandfather? and echoes the posts of Kaare and jkmarler:
Olaf A. Nilson Born 23 February 1879 Died 29 March 1922 Buried: New Norway Cemetery New Norway, Lloydminster Census Division, Alberta, Canada |

And in the 1921 Canada Census, they were living in Alberta, which is a good match to the JaneC find above.

More about the 11.05.1906 Oslo departure found by jkmarler:
Traveling with Olaf age 27 and Oline age 35 is Arthur Evang Anders. age 8 months. Residence Furnes.
A perfect fit with the 1916 Canada census Anton posted.
In past times, Norwegian naming custom was for a person's last name to be father first name plus "sen." Son of Anders would be Andersen. Modern practice was for the children's last name to be same as father's last name - as was also naming custom in Canada. A son of Anders Nilsen could be Olaf Andersen, and then switch to Nilsen when immigrating to Canada. |

Can you tell me how I can translate those documents that you referred to, "Kaarto". Is there a program on the computer where I can translate into English? These are my grandparents and with these documents I can go farther back. |
