The guy I have mentioned, was born in Vang in Valdres in Oppland on July 27, 1865. His parents were Thomas Jøgersen and Marit Knutsdaughter. They lived at a place called Torstad. His confirmation took place on May 23, 1880, and the minister has written on the left side of his name that he left Norway in 1883. Via an emigrant protocol (Emigrants via Oslo/Christiania 1867-1930), Gulbrand Tomasson, 17 years old, left Oslo for Waupaca (in Wisconsin) on May 11, 1883. I am then wondering if it is possible to find more information about him! Anne in Oslo

A family who left on the same day as Gulbrand and are also from Vang Valdres is found arriving in New York on May 25th on the Adriatic. So far I have not found Gulbrand on that ship.

This is my best guess as to your Gulbrand arriving in America. Name is relatively close and age is spot on. Looking at the original manifest I would say that the last name is very likely Tomasson and the first name could be Gulbrand.
New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 Name: Galbian Tounsson Arrival Date: 25 May 1883 Birth Date: abt 1866 Age: 17 Gender: Male Ethnicity/ Nationality: Norwegian Place of Origin: Norway Port of Departure: Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland Destination: United States of America Port of Arrival: New York, New York Ship Name: Adriatic Search Ship Database: Search for the Adriatic in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database |

Being unsuccessful in finding Gulbrand / Gudbrand Thomasson here is an extreme long shot in Gilbert Thompson.
Gilbert Thompson b Jul 1866 udv 1883 1900 census: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MMR3-DBC
Gilbert Thompson b. 1865 udv 1882 1910 census: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MLGY-3PD
Gilbert Thompson in 1916 Canadian census: https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Agilbert~%20%2Bsurname%3Athompson~%20%2Bbirth_place%3Anorway~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1864-1866~&collection_id=1529118
During the time the family was in Grand Forks, two daughters of M/M Gilbert Thompson died. An Ida Thompson died of diptheria near 2 Aug 1908 (family resided as 611 N 5th St) and Lena Alice Thompson b. 1 March 1903 Day county, S.D. d 21 Feb 1910, family residing 609 N 5th St.
Didn't find Lena Alice's birth record in the 100 year old birth records of South Dakota database but did find the births of a set of twins Peter and Bertha Thompson on 2 Aug 1902 in Day county to father Gilbert Thompson and mother's maiden name Anna Kluxdal. If both birthdates of 2 Aug 1902 and 1 Mar 1903 are true indicates a very tight turn time, not impossible, just difficult.
There were several other mentions of a Gilbert Thompson of the era of 1903-1913 in the Grand Forks Herald but lacking enough information to truly identify. One was a story of employee theft from the Nash grocery warehouse in which a Gilbert Thompson was mentioned as a non-prosecuted --didn't even lose his job!--small-time participant. And the other mention was 5 publications of a legal ad in May & June 1912, advertising a mortgage sale on a defaulted promissory note dated 5 Jan 1910 for $200 from a Gilbert and Anna Thompson on which properties were security, properties described as Lots 23, 24 in Block 69 & Lot 16 in Block 60 in Alexander and Iver addition were to be sold to recover $235.10 +$25.00. Don't know if any of these were for 609/611 North 5th St.
But as I said this candidate is an extreme long shot.

Interesting find Jackie. a Family Tree on Ancestry.com identifies Anna S Thompson as Anna Sofia Kluxdal Birth Mar 1862 in Wautoma, Waushara, Wisconsin, USA, Waushara County is adjacent to Waupaca County. The site identifies her father as Iver Johannessen. "aka Ever Johnson" Kluksdal.
Connects the family with this record.
1880 United States Federal Census Name: Ever Johnson Age: 78 Birth Year: abt 1802 Birthplace: Norway Home in 1880: Mount Morris, Waushara, Wisconsin Race: White Gender: Male Relation to Head of House: Self (Head) Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: Emeline Johnson Father's Birthplace: Norway Mother's Birthplace: Norway Neighbors: View others on page Occupation: Farmer View image Household Members: Name Age Ever Johnson 78 Emeline Johnson 48 John Johnson 21 Anna S. Does the database say anything about Anne Sophie's husband and her family?
Is the brother George identified as Rev. Gudmund Kluxdal? |

Information on Anne Sophie includes only husband's name and info probably from the 1900 US Census. and a list of the couples seven children along with birth years. Source is probably 1900 Census
Gilbert Thompson Birth Jul 1866 in Norway |

I am so very impressed by all the fantastic answers I have received from you. "Rollo" was the name of the ship he left on, and I do not know any other names that went westwards with him from Vang in Valdres - but it may have been those who are mentioned in the answers, although the boat was different. The Gilbert Thompson-name is probably his new one. I am asking then: Was he married? Did he have any children?

Probably Gudmund and his wife and son in the 1900 US Census. Maybe a little early to assign Gilbert Thompson to Gulbrand Tomasson. It is possible that Gilbert is the son of Gudmund Thompson of Todd County, Minnesota.

Google found a family tree at Ancestry very like the one already mentioned in which Gilbert Thompson is also identified as "Ingebret Gudmundson", no source but likely to do with this finding of the Gilbert and Anna couple in 1895. As I said, twice, it would be a long shot for Gilbert to be Gulbrand but by the numbers he was at least not ripe for immediate elimination.
Making the name Gulbrand into Gilbert is a fairly common happening as well as making Thompson from any T-beginning patronymic. Also the 1895 Minnesota census doesnot give relationship data to the head of household, that information would have to be found elsewhere. So maybe back to Square One. |
