Well Gilbert may have some legs as a candidate. Here is the 1885 Minnesota State Census for Gunderman Thompson and family. The wife is named Engeber in this census. The children are listed as Thomas, John, Martha 21 Ingebright 19, Nils 17, Sarah 15, Betsey 13, Jennie 11, Ingebor 9, Andreas 7, Matilda 1.All listed as having been born in Norway except for Matilda. If Gilbert were a son of Gudmund he should be around Martha and Ingebright. .

Minnesota, Territorial and State Censuses, 1849-1905
Name: Gunderman Thompson
Age: 46
Census Date: 1 May 1885
County: Todd
Locality: West Union
Birth Location: Norway
Gender: Male
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1839
Race: White
LINE: 14
Roll: MNSC_43

Here is, I believe, the head of household Gudmund leaving Norway with wife Ingeborg, 2 year old Andreas, and an 11 year old Sigrid & others (you have to page through the children to see the group) heading for Osakis, Minnesota:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/gen/vis/8/pe00000000067189

Sigrid is possibly the first wife of Olaf Buness in another topic on Norway Heritage. The brother Andreas is living with Sigrid's daughter Ida Brakken in the 1920 census.

Sometimes the old method for Emigration is usefull.

For certain, many times much preferred.

Here the family is in 1875 still on the same farm:

Sigrid's baptism #7:
Source information: Nord-Trøndelag county, Meråker in Øvre Stjørdal, Parish register (official) nr. 706A02 (1862-1877), Birth and baptism records 1870, page 25.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=6620&idx_id=6620&uid=ny&idx_side=-28

Brother Ingebright shares a July birthdate with target Gulbrand Tomasson:
Source information: Nord-Trøndelag county, Meråker in Øvre Stjørdal, Parish register (official) nr. 706A02 (1862-1877), Birth and baptism records 1866, page 14.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=6620&idx_id=6620&uid=ny&idx_side=-17

I suppose the "bright" or "bret" of Ingebret might be reminiscent of the "bert" part of Gilbert....

So Gilbert Thompson could be the same person as Ingebright Gudmundsen? Well there is a Family Tree on Ancestry.com that thinks so as well. The Tree has no father listed for this person. Shown as

Gilbert "Ingebrigt Gudmundsen" Thompson
Birth Jul 1866 in Norway
Death

No spouse listed but six children are listed and the Tree is linked to the 1900 and 1910 US Census posted already by Jackie. The Tree is owned by a David Kluxdal.

Redid it and it worked for me, try again and let me know. For some reason the link will not work as desired. It takes one to the main Trondheim Emmigration page. However if you enter the year and er lik and 1882. Followed by Ettternamn and Inneheld and Gud you will go to the correct page.

You have found much information about a guy with the name Gulbrand/Gudbrand - but he is NOT from Trøndelag, which is the complete page 2. As I wrote on the first page, he was born in Oppland!

Great work lyndal40. Anne, yes, that's right. In the beginning Gilbert Thompson looked as if he could be your Gudmund. As was said, not enough was known about Gilbert, to be sure. All the research was necessary to show whether he was the right guy or not. If more /new candidates are found, the same process will be needed again.

Anne,
Did Gulbrand have any siblings or cousins, aunts or uncles who came to US?

What were the names of the farms Gulbrand lived on in Vang?
