Hello, we've traced my ancestors back several generations in Norway, and now I am looking to find distant cousins who may be part of this forum.

Is anyone else a descendent of Nicolai Joensen of Midthun (born October 1780) and Kari Ottesdatter of Gulen (born November 1780)?

They had seven children in Gulen: Halfri (1807); Joen (1809); Marie (1812); Otte (1815); Elling (1817); Johanne (1820); Hans (1824). The surname is Nikolaisen, Nicolaisdatter, and Joenssen depending on the source.

Thank you! This is very good information for me to move forward...
I suppose I need help using the Digital Archives. When I do a regular person search for their names, none of this information comes up. I have no idea how to find the information that you acquired. Could you give any tips for what to search? For example, how did you find the family's move to Askvoll? Do you use the search function, or some other more diligent method? Once I learn that I should be able to do more tracing of descendents on my own. Thank you so much!

Lyndal... that person is me. :-) That is my site and my Ancestry tree. Johanne Nicoliasdatter was my g-g-g-grandmother and now I am trying to fill in the other branches from her siblings. :-)

It says that "Pigen" The girl Johanne Nielsdatter moved in to Gulen parish April 12 1840 and she was 17 years old. The purpose was "att tjene" to work. She came from Fiskesæth in Hosanger, Seims "Sogn" parish where she was born. She was living at Evindvigs "Præstegaard" rectory.

Ah, thank you Einer. I appreciate your translation, because it verifies that I was foolishly looking at the wrong entry (immigration, not emigration). I found Johanne Nicolaisdatter's emigration record on the next page. :-)

Probably Lyder Johan Joenson Midthun in the 1900 US census at Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin Minnesota:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M938-8P6

Lyder's wife Lovise's funeral was celebrated in Glenwood Lutheran church she having died 17 May 1905 at age 67. In the record her father is named as lensmann Lasse Ellingsen.

Probably Bertel Joenson in 1900 census also at Chippewa Falls:

I found the information about the family's move to Askvoll in the Gulen bygdebok.

Thanks, jwiborg. I figured out how to do it now... a very step by step process! It is neat to see the other families as well when you search through each page.

So far I haven't been able to find Johanne's name in the immigration record to Askvoll. http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_id=8598
I know she had moved to Oslo to teach at Tofte's Gave orphanage before 1857, so I am also going to look through Askvoll emigration records for those years to see if there is a record of her leaving there.

I found the record for the marriage of Johanne and Elling at Oslo Domkirke on 19 September 1856
Entry #167
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=662&idx_id=662&uid=ny&idx_side=-324
Ungkarl (bachelor) Elling Iverson, age 38, father Iver Johnsen
Johanne Johnsen, age 36, from Eivindvik, father Nikolai Johnsen, gardbruker

Could anyone help fill in the missing pieces from the handwriting? Thank you.

I'm also wondering if this might be Johanne's immigration record to Oslo. She had moved to Askvoll in 1840, but was in Oslo before 1856 for the marriage, so I'm trying to pinpoint when she arrived in Oslo. I still need a lot of practice with reading the handwriting and deciphering the words. Entry #119? http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_side=44&show=15&uid=546168&urnread_imagesize=gigant&hode=nei&ls=1
EDIT: I don't think that is her record. Person #119 is from Dokkemoen. I'll keep looking.

Elling Iversen's occupation: Indspektør ("Inspector")
Father Iver Johnsen's occupation: Forpagter ("Leaseholder", ie. renting a farm)
