So if Tomine is a widow (stone mason's widow) at Einar's baptism May 1898, and his father is not Sven, then her husband Sven died before May 1898 and perhaps before fall 1897. But I did not find the death in Halden church book, through May 1898. |

Great find!
And not to disparage johnsimensen's Norwegian language skills, but he might need a transcription / translation of all that. I know I do!
Taking a quick version of names and date-of-birth from 1900 and 1910 census transcriptions, the children are: 1. Carl Oskar Hjalmar Svendsen b ca 1888 - Hjalmar in 1910 2. Johan Alfred Fritjof Svendsen b ca 1892 - Alfred in 1910 3. Sven August Svendsen b ca 1894 - August in 1910 4. Einar Fritjof, missing in 1910 5. Aksel Olsen b ca 1901 6. Viljam Olsen b ca 1907 7. Reidar Olsen b ca 1906
In the probate, which I find hard to read (due to both language and script) I think I see: 1. Hjalmar Svendsen, USA 2. Alfred Svendsen, USA 3. August Svendsen, Australien 4. Einar not mentioned in probate 5. 6. 7. Aksel, William, and Reidar Simensen - location?
I get the feeling that Sven August Swensen's mother (and family) called him August. And you mention that in Australia he was called "Gus."
Traditional to name children after grandparents. Tomine's father was Karl; Sven August Larsen's father was Johan; and Sven August himself likely his father's namesake. Honorary first names like these don't necessarily become a calling name. Both my parents have honorary first names (after grandparents) but are called by middle names that belong uniquely to them.
John, the switching in surnames can be confusing so ask again if so, or read about patronymic names and the way Norway modernized to using permanent family surnames into the early twentieth century (that is, switching last name was a cultural phenomenon). |

Yes, known to be in Australia as of 1931 - good point! John, do you have his death certificate? Typically it lists parents. Wondering if the informant knew those names. |

Interesting question. He was already long in Australia by 1924 (it seems to me I read about the birth of a daughter Miriam Olive in 1920 in the newspaper and there's his WWI service.) |

About the 1924 certificate noted at far left of Svend August birth-baptism record, yes good question. Obviously johnswensen is best to answer. I'll just toss out that Svend's brother Johan Alfred Fritjof Svendsen (called Alfred and born 1892) emigrated Dec 1924. Could the priest mistakenly mean to have made a notation re the brother? A long shot.
Back in an edit to say later evidence found shows this is the correct Alfred.
1940 US census New York, Kings, New York Residence: 1530 E 57th Street Alfred Swensen 47, born about 1893 in Norway, carpenter Ragenheld Swensen 46 b Norway Grace Swensen 10 b New York Adele Swensen 5 Residence in 1935: rural Halden, Norway** in same household: William Swensen 24, son, married, b Norway, rigger (docks) Dorothy Swensen 18 Arthur Eriksen 29, son-in-law Ruth Eriksen 20, daughter, b Norway Marvel Eriksen 1 Residence for Ruth in 1935: rural Halden, Norway
** 1940 census asked people to report their 1935 residence.
About "Marvel Eriksen": the handwritten original might say "Muriel."
I viewed the transcription at Ancestry.com. Slightly different transcription of same record here (found with simple Google search): http://www.mocavo.com/search?start=0&limit=10&dataset%5B%5D=126214&nc%5Bhousehold_id%5D=021087751 Same family in 1930.

The Fulton newspaper site has an obituary for Hjalmar Swensen. He died 24 Dec 1973 so Sven August Swensen is not mentioned since he died in 1951. Alfred Swensen of Long Island and 1/2 brother Rirdar Simonsen of Norway are the only surviving siblings. Hjalmar did have children who are mentioned. Paper name is Harlem Valley Times [Amenia, New York] Paper date is Thursday, 3 Jan 1974, printed page 12, col 2-3. I couldn't find a web address for the page but here is posted file info below:

Hi
4 of Svend's siblings lived in Norway when their mother died 1931. His 3 half-siblings Aksel Norman (1901-1971), William Ludvig (1903-1984) and Reidar Marenius (1906-1984) are all burried at Os cemetery, Halden. Aksel and Reidar used Simensen as surname, William used Olsen. Their father August Olsen Simensen (1873-1949) is also burried there.

According to information from Geni the wife of Aksel was Ragnhild Marie (1907-1993) and their was son Svenn-Åge Simensen (1934-1952). They are also burried at Os cemetery. Aksel and Ragnhild also had a daughter according to Geni. Her name is Anne-Lise Thomassen (born Jan 22, 1929 dead March 29, 2013). She was married to Asbjørn Thomassen (1926-1995). He is burried at Asak cemetery in Halden. https://lokalhistoriewiki.no/index.php/Asak_kirke_%28Halden%29
The death of Anne-Lise was announced in the local newspaper from Halden. She left behind two daughters and two grandchildren. (Only their given names are written in the notice)

Vivi,
Is there a funeral home in charge of Anne-Lise's service? (Someone had to pay for the service and the home may have kept contact information or full names of survivors or their hometowns.)
Who holds the care contracts on the burials in Halden? |

Wow!!! Lots of new info here.
Here's Hjalmar's obit. (Great find, Jackie)
"Hjalmar Swensen, 84, a Wassaic resident, died Monday, Dec 24, at the Victory Lake Nursing Home, Hyde Park (Dutchess county, New York). Born in Norway February 27, 1889, he was the son of Sven A. and Mina (Eriksen) Larsen. Mr. Swensen was a retired seaman. His wife, the former Clara Kise, died in September 1971. Mr. Swensen is survived by four daughters: Mrs. Nellie Swindell, Brooklyn; Mrs. Ester Swartz, Clinton Corners; Mrs. Marion Larsen, Rochester; and Mrs. Robert Barlow, Wassaic; 14 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; a brother Alfred, Long Island; and a half brother Rirdar Simonsen, Norway; and several cousins." -- died 24 Dec 1973, obit 02 Jan 1974
Find a Grave website includes family memorials and more obits. Photo of Hjalmar Swensen grave marker: http://image1.findagrave.com/photos/2010/158/53414894_127602233498.jpg The name Tomine was likely pronounced with the final e said as "uh" - Tomina. Mina must be her nickname. She is also Mina in the 1885 census. Nice to know what she was called.
So there's a basketful of cousins for your dad, John. |
