Here is another record, the death record of Lars H Rusten, the record below shows him as Lars W, but looking at the original I read it as an H. Also I think the burial year is the same as the year died. The origianal shows a hard to read 1893, The deceased then have a date in front of their name, for Lars it is a hard to read death date as maybe 11/4 or maybe 19/4 and a 19/4 for burial date. He is listed as having died in Odin and born in Norge. He is listed as being 70 years old.

Lars W Rusten in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Records, 1875-1940
Name: Lars W Rusten
Event Type: burial
Death Date: 19 Apr 1893
Burial Date: 19 Apr 1896
Church Name: St Olaf Lutheran
Church Location: Martin, Minnesota

What I know for certain is that my Sigurd was the brother of Mary Larson Serkland. She is listed my Dad's baby book along with her daughter Mae as giving him gifts for his birth. I met Cousin Mae several times and have photos of Sigurd with Mary and photos of Mae. This is the correct Sigurd according to the date and place of birth and verified on his death certificate and WWI registration. One thing that is curious is that in the 1895 census, two years before the confirmation, Sigurd is listed as living with another family. His father had died by that time and his mother may have been hospitalized. He was only 11 when his father died. That could also be contributing to the reporting of names.

That goes with the name on the headstone of Lars Hanson Rusten.

And then this is some other person with a similar but reversed name who died later than your Lars Hanson Rusten.

Name: Hans Lars Rusten
Death Date: 1908
Cemetery: Saint Olaf Cemetery
Burial or Cremation Place: Ormsby, Martin County, Minnesota, USA
Has Bio?: N

Looks like they are buried in the same cemetary. Is this then the son of your Lars Hanson Rusten?

Yes, that is my thinking. I contacted the Pastor am was waiting for more info to be certain. The age of Kari in the church records matches my information, but the headstones has 1878 as the birth year. Death year is correct. They had a daughter Kari who was born in 1878. I could not find her in the 1885 census, so I am inclined to believe that she died as a young girl before 1885. The pastor was going to look for more information. I have also requested records from St. Peter's Hospital where a Kari Lars Rusten was recorded in the census records from 1900 until 1920. This should help fill in the gaps.

Looks like more records are needed to sort this out.

Minnesota Historical Society (free website)
DEATH RECORD
RUSTIN, KARI LARS
Date of Birth: NA <------------ missing info online is available (or likely is available) in the original death record
Place of Birth: NA
Mother Maiden Name: NA
CERTID# 1920-MN-009043
Date of Death: 12 MAR 1920
County of Death: NICOLLET <---------- location of the state hospital in St Peter, Nicollet, Minnesota

A copy of the death record will cost under $20 and should or may tell her parents names (though surely her father is Lars Hansen Rusten).

Find-a-Grave for Kari the younger - tombstone says Kari Rusten 1878 -1920 (as has been previously posted) Link

St Olaf Lutheran Church
Ormsby, Martin county, Minnesota
churchbook (indexed on Ancestry.com)
Page 245 - 1920 deaths - there is no Kari of any surname. So the Kari buried at the St Olaf cemetery is likely the woman who died in Nicollet county

Find-a-Grave shows a second Kari Rusten died 1921 at that same St Olaf cemetery, but again no such person is noted in the St Olaf churchbook, and Minnesota historical society has no Kari dying in 1921, so perhaps that's just a Find-a-Grave error.

I believe obtaining records from the state hospital at St Peter would be problematic....but let us know if that works.

*******************************

Hans L Rusten who died 1908 - per St Olaf churchbook in Ormsby, he was age 56 (born 1852) which matches the oldest son of Lars Hansen (Rusten).

Great .....

Browsing the St Olaf confirmations in the churchbook
1896 Ole Hanson, age 16, born 24 June 1880, in Albion, son of Hans and Mari Rusten. Recall the Hans Larson that married Marit Olsdatter Moen (Turmoen) who was said to be also called Hans Larson Rusten born September 1851 - he lived in Albion which adds credence to the story that he's called Rusten (which I believed, just saying here's some documentation).

For Sigurd's confirmation, says family belongs to the Odin congregation and behavior was ---?--- god.

1892 Confirmations in the St Olaf Churchbook
Peter Larson age 17, born 28 August 1875 in Lom, Norge, parents are Lars and Kari Sønstenæs (? hard to read the place name exactly but this is the gist of it - same as that farm name where we found Lars Hansen in Lom). Peter was confirmed with Lars Hansen, born 27 Dec 1876 in Lom, son of Hans and Marit Larsen in Albion.

Here is Peder's birth 28 August 1875 in Lom - parents Lars Hansen and Kari Olsdatter - last record on the page: #49

Lars H. Rusten who dies in 1893 is not called Hans in the churchbook record of his death, as has been said.

So why are Lars and Kari suddenly transformed into Hans and Kari earlier, in 1882 when Sigurd is born - and later, in 1897 when Sigurd is confirmed - plus an 1885 census record with a Sigurd as a child to Hans and Kari.

I can see why this has been a tangle for you lcampbell.

The original of Peter's death certificate is viewable on Ancestry.com.

Texas, Death Certificates
Peter Larson
Birth Date: 28 Aug 1875
Birth Place: Norway
Residence: Sabine, Jefferson, Texas
Age at Death: 68
Death Date: 12 Aug 1944
Death Place: Sabine, Jefferson, Texas, USA
no parents named - informant is Hilda C Larson

I was curious whether Lars Hanson transformed into Hans Hanson for any of the other children.

When Sigurd died his brother Peter listed their father as Lars Larson not Hans Larson, but yes, it is a tangle! We have definitely made progress though!

1885
Odin, Watonwan, Minnesota
Hans Hanson age 62 b Norway
Kari Hanson age 55 b Norway
Lars Hanson age 13 b Norway
Mary Hanson age 11 b Norway
Peter Hanson age 9 b Norway
Sigurd Hanson age 3 - Born in Minnesota
....Now look who is living right next door......
Amund Larson 28 b Norway
Anna Larson 27 b Norway
Mary Larson 3 b Norway
Lars Larson 2 b Norway
Ole Larson age 0 b Norway

This neighboring family lends credence to the idea that "Hans Hanson" should be Lars Hanson (Rustin), because the neighbors must be son Amund and family.

The family of Amund Larson and Emma Olson Moen (from page 3 and other earlier references in this thread):
Amund S Larsen b 15 Oct 1856 in Lom, Norway
Emma Olson Moen b 12 Aug 1857 in Norway
Marie S. Larson b Aug 1881 in Minnesota
Lars S Larson b 25 Jan 1883 in Minnesota
Ole Larsn b 11 Oct 1884 in Minnesota

Maybe the pastor at St Olaf in Odin (who serves three congregations I think, in Long Lake, St James, and Odin) is over burdened and making mistakes in his records. Which wouldn't explain the 1885 census and Sigurd death record parents.

lcampbell, If you have similar name, date, location info on the other siblings, that will help....or anyway will save the rest of us from searching for it. For example, I'm not seeing Kari in St Peter in 1900, where you said you found her.

Lars Hansen and Kari Olsdatter's son
Lars
born 28 January 1872 in Lom (before the parents married):
#44
SOURCE: Oppland fylke, Lom, Ministerialbok nr. 7 (1863-1884), Fødte og døpte 1872, side 49

So WWI record, death record etc. in USA should match that date.
