On the page that says uncle Louis O Larson at the top there is a number in a box with an arrow on the left and an arrow on the right. To see the first page with Lars Johanneson Kleppe's name click on the left arrow.

Other cousins or nephews need names to be searched. The Norwegian naming practice means that you get your surname based on your father's given name. Lars Larson was the grandfather and Johannes Larson and your Louis Larson were his sons. Lars Johanneson Kleppe was Johannes Larson's son. Kleppe was the name of the farm they came from like their address. That's how there can be families of sons with different last names.

Hi all - Lisa, no need to subscribe to Ancestry. We've probably got just about all the records available there. I just meant If you already had info from Ancestry (or anywhere), to please post it.

I'll add transcriptions of the records jkmarler posted on links, and add a few additional records - all from the USA. In these records you can clearly recognize your own Louis, and then you can see how these link back to Norway.

Next after developing USA information is to search in Norway. We have to remember that a man named Louis might likely be called Lars in Norway. That would be normal. Also need to remember the patronymic naming system and the way the patronymic naming system evolved over time. Also need to remember that it was traditional for Norwegians to put a farm address at the end of a name. The address name changed when the person moved. At the time of immigration, a person might use his patronymic name (like Larson) or might use his farm address (like the farm name Kleppe), as a "last name."

Jkmarler posted a link to a transcription of the following birth:

Lars Olai Larsen
Born 13 May 1883
Baptized 12 August 1883
Hosanger in Hosanger, Hordaland, Norway
Parents: Lars Larsen born 1840 and Ingebor Olsdr. (Olsdatter) born 1842
Parents residence: Ø. Kleppe [Østre Kleppe]
Link to original church book record:
#18

The name, birth date, and father's name match "your" Louis. This particular young man was found immigrating to USA when he was age 19, which fits the family story for your Louis. In addition, later on a young man from this family travels to his uncle Louis Larson in St Maries, Idaho - so that is the evidence we need, to show your Louis is this Lars Olai.

I think it may be your Louis on an Ellis Island record under the name "Olai L Kleppe," age 18, arriving New York on the Campania from Liverpool in late April 1902. He is traveling to an uncle in Superior, Wisconsin (I'm having trouble reading uncle's name).

Below, link to a Geni family tree for Lars Olai Larsen, Østre Kleppe:
Link

The Geni tree puts the farm address Østre Kleppe at the end of everyone's name; I've removed it below. The Geni tree shows ten children in Lars Olai's family; many died young. All the info on the tree needs to be checked before we know if it's correct.

1. Lars Larsen b 1865-d 1865
2. Johannes Larsen b 07 Dec 1869 - d 1909
3. Anna Larsdatter b 1872 - d 1873
4. Anna Larsdatter b 18 March 1874 - d 1929; spouse Johannes Andreas Johannesen Mjelde
5. Larsina Larsdatter b 1874 - d 1874
6. Larsina Olina Larsdatter b 1877 - d 1882
7. Ole Larsen b 1880 - d 1880
8. Mons Larsen b 30 August 1881 - d unknown
9. Lars Olai Larsen b 13 May 1883 - d USA
10. Monsina Severina Larsdatter b 12 May 1886-d 1952 Norway

The siblings who lived to adulthood were Johannes, Anna, Mons, Lars Olai (Louis), and Monsina.

Birth of Johannes on this link. Born 07 Dec 1869, Hosanger in Hosanger, Hordaland, Norway, parents Lars Larsen and Ingeborg Olsdatter Kleppe Link

So the Geni tree is right about the birth of Johannes, brother to Lars (Louis).

A boy who is the son of Johannes will be named Johannesen. The Geni tree says Johannes had at least two sons who emigrated to the USA and died there:
1) Lars Johannesen born 24 Jan 1899 (also called Lars or Louis Johnson / Lars Klep)
2) Magnus Johannesen born 1903

So if that's true - IF - that's two nephews for Louis Larsen coming to the USA.
jkmarler posted an emigration record for Lars.

US Naturalization Records, Washington Eastern District - Spokane
Lars Johannesen Kleppe (Louis Johnson) (Lars Johnson) ***
Birth: 24 Jan 1899
Last residence: Bergen, Norway
Naturalization Date: 17 Jun 1941
Residence: Spokane, Washington
Wife is Clara Elizabeth Kleppe. Married 04 July 1936 in Portland; she was born in Spangle, Washington.
This document says they have two children:
1) Claudine Ingeborg Kleppe born 30 Aug 1937, born Spokane
2) Laureen Janice Kleppe born 20 Aug 1838, born Spokane
Lars emigrated under the name Lars J. Kleppe, arrived New York 14 January 1925 on the SS Mauretania
He formally petitions that his name be changed to Lars Johnson.
*** the alternate names in parenthesis are included in the petition as shown

Lars's 1925 trip here, from New York Passenger Lists database:
Ship Name: Mauretania
Departure: Southampton, England
Arrival New York: 14 Jan 1925
Lars J Kleppe, age 25
Birth: abt 1900 in Hosanger, Norway
Traveling to Uncle Louis O Larsen in St Maries, Idaho

1940 US Census (ignore the typos)
Spokane, Spokane, Washington
Address: South Browne Street
Laro Johnson 40 born in Norway, car repairman
Clara Johnson 33 born in Washington
Claudine Johnson 2 born in Washington
Laureenn Johnson 1

Again, this Lars is a nephew of your Louis. He's the son of Louis's brother Johannes.

That Geni family tree seems to be created by a Norwegian, may be a descendant of Lars Larsen and Ingeborg Olsdatter (Louis's parents). You could try making contact through Geni.

The records for Louis O Larson (born Lars Olai Larsen, of østre Kleppe farm) show that he grew up on Osterøy Island, northeast of Bergen. He was baptized in Hosanger church, which is in Hosanger village on the island.

A beautiful place for you to visit!

1910 Norway Census in Hosanger herred, Hordaland
Residence: Kleppe Østre
Ingeborg Olsdatter born 20 Oct 1874 in Hosanger (she's widow of Louis's brother Johannes)
Ida Johannesdatter b 25 Aug 1897 in Hosanger
Lars Johannesen b 24 Jan 1899 in Hosanger (he's Louis's nephew who came to USA)
Ole Johannessen b 28 Oct 1901 in Hosanger
Magnus Johannesen b 15 Oct 1903 in Hosanger (he's Louis's nephew who came to USA)
Bertha Johannesdatter b 10 Feb 1906 in Hosanger
LARS LARSEN b 10 Feb 1842 in Hosanger (he is Louis's dad)
Ingeborg Olsdatter b 10 Feb 1844 in Hosanger (she is Louis's mom)
Jenny Johannesen b 26 Jan 1900 in Herloe, foster daughter
Johan Larsen b 14 Oct 1878 (he's Monsina's husband)
Monsina Larsdatter 12 May 1886 wife of Johan Larsen (sister of Louis)
Anton Johansen b 22 July 1910 son of Johan and Monsina

See the above census on this link:

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01036697001211

Notice how the birth dates for Lars and Magnus match their birth dates in US records.

Here is a family tree you made Lisa, in which you used Louis's middle name of Olai (would have been a good idea to have shared that middle name with us!) and say Louis died in Spokane, Washington (not Idaho):

Lisa, please go to Ellis Island website (free) and search for Olai L Kleppe, age 18, traveling in April 1902. Look at the passenger manifest. "Olai" is traveling to an uncle in Superior, Wisconsin. Can you read the name of the uncle? As I mentioned I found it hard to read. This might be Lars Olai traveling, and the uncle might have children, and these might be the cousins in the USA remembered by your great-grandmother.

Another research route would be to carefully examine the Geni family tree I posted. If you find any one noted as going to the USA, we could look into it.

Any shortcut route like that might be worth pursuing. Otherwise you're left finding the separate life records for many people, a massive task, and no assurance that persons found going to USA are the "right" cousins anyway.

Another route is to check family photo albums and memorabilia for the names of the cousins, so we have some one to search for.

Likely if the cousins had played a significant role for Louis and Clara, their names would be mentioned in her 13-page memoir, so perhaps they aren't so important to find. The needed research seems out of proportion, if no shortcuts pan out.

Quite a bit of info on Ole Olsen Moen (or Turmoen) is posted in Emma's thread. I created a recap in case that helps you in sorting through that thread.
