Hi, Thor Halvorson Myklebust b. 7. October 1835, immigrated to America 1853 by the ship " Augusta" from Bergen to N.Y.
This is the only thing I know about him.

Thor had a sister Anna Severeide and a broter Johannes (John) Halvorson living at Hamilton Co. Iowa. Thor is not mentioned in letters sent back to Norway.

Problem with this Thor Halvorsen is his birth year seems to be 1838 and he immigrated in 1872. He is probably the same person listed above .

Not looking good for this Thor Halvorson or Thor Haldorsen. Seems to have been born in 1838 and immigrated in 1872. Does not fit with your peson.

Here's what Find-a-Grave memorial has to say about Anna Severeide:
Birth: Sep. 18, 1835
Death: May 14, 1924
Rose Grove Cemetery, Williams, Hamilton, Iowa
Husband : Erick Severeide
Link

A different Anna, Anna Haaland Savereid, was born 15 Apr 1834, died 26 Apr 1887 in Story City, Story county, Iowa. Thus I don't think we've found the earliest records for Anna in the USA. Magnar, when did Anna and her brother John emigrate?

1910 US Census
Hamilton, Hamilton, Iowa
Gooman Wing 54
Hanah Wing 35 born about 1875 in Iowa
Joseph M Wing 8
Anna C Wing 6
Tolman H Wing 3
Anna Severed 75 widowed mother-in-law, to USA 1870 <----
Raymond Kallen 16

1920
Ellsworth, Hamilton, Iowa
John A Gimre 55
Bertha Gimre 51 born about 1869
Anna Swereid 84 widowed mother-in-law, to USA 1870 <-----

So Thor arrived in USA before Anna... means he didn't travel to join Anna in Hamilton county, Iowa. Erick Severeide in Hamilton county, Iowa in 1880 and 1885 census is married to Betsey.

Okay, here's why. Looks like the right Anna, but married in Story City:

MARRIAGE RECORD from Ancestry.com
Name: Anna H. Micklebrist, age 53, widowed
Birth: 1834 in Norway
Birth Place: Norway
Marriage Date: 7 Dec 1887
Marriage Place: Story City, Story County, IA
Father: H. T. Micklebrist
Mother: Brita Thorsdatter
Spouse: Erick A. Severide
FHL Film Number: 1403711
Reference ID: 2:3XDKVS2

Maybe Thor?

U.S., Civil War Pension Index
Thor Halvorson
Service: I 15 Iowa Inf
Date of filing: 15 August 1881
State from which filed: Ga [Georgia]
Application #426.891
Certificate #512563

Posted on Iowa GenWeb website - if this is correct, he is too old:
FIFTEENTH REGIMENT IOWA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY
Halverson, Thor. Age 35. Residence Keokuk, nativity Norway. Enlisted Oct. 21, 1861.
Mustered Jan. 24, 1861. Discharged Dec. 29, 1864, Savannah, Ga., expiration of term of service.
Link

Below, could be same soldier (served with same company):
Veteran's Name: Thomas Halverson
Home in 1890: National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Elizabeth City, Virginia
Year enlisted: 1861
Year discharged: 1864
Rank: Private
Service: I 15 Iowa Inf [Infantry]

Vesterheim Museum says a soldier named Halvorson might be in its database under Alverson, Halversen, Halvorsen, Halvurson, Holverson, Hulverson

Here is the only record, I can find for the Augusta in 1853. It carried 100 passengers, none of them are named Thor Halovorsen or even close to that name.

New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Arrival Date: 23 Aug 1853

Place of Origin: Bremen
Port of Departure: Bremen, Germany
Destination: United States of America
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Augusta

In a "History of Houston County (Minnesota I assume) there is listed : In 1852, Thor Halvorson, probably the first Scandanavian in the county, located in the southeast quarter of section 3, He made some improvements and did some wood chopping, but for several years spent most of his time away." Very little info and the immigration year is one year early.

History of La Crescent, Houston, Minnesota says Thor Halverson lived there until 1881. 1880 census, Thor Halverson is listed born 1826 in Norway. Too bad - that was a hot lead.
