I received this marriage certificate from the New York City Municipal Archives today. It's from my great-great grandfather's first marriage. I know that Axel Lie (my great-great grandfather) was born in the town of Svelvik, Vestfold, which this record corroborates. Unfortunately, I can't seem to read the birthplace of his wife. I've tried a few spellings, and nothing seems to come up. If anybody happens to recognize the place name, it would be very helpful.

Hi

You probably have this, but here is the baptizm of Axel in Strømmen, Hurum. He was born 14. dec. 1859.

Thanks all for the help! Unfortunately, I can't find a Marie Anne/Mariane Larsdatter born to Lars Henriksen and Petronelle/Petrine in Hedmark county in the right time period, nor can I find any marriages between a Lars Henriksen and Petronelle/Petrine. Does anybody have any suggestions or helpful hints?

I was also able to find this indexed record:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVS2-7YWX

...but I can't entirely verify that it's the right Mariane Larsdatter. The dates seem to line up to within a few years, however.

Yes, the wife seems to be difficult to find. The closest I was able to come up with on the Ancestry.com Norwegian marriages data base was a real long shot for the parents?

Name: Lars Helgesen
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 5 jun 1843
Marriage Place: Aamot,Hedmark,Norway
Father: Helge Helgesen
Spouse: Petronelle Jensdr
FHL Film Number: 307253

Also see number 24

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=9187&idx_id=9187&uid=ny&idx_side=-206

The only child they had that I could find with a close birth year is:

Name: Lina Larsen
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 1 feb 1855
Baptism Date: 15 apr 1855
Baptism Place: Aamot,Hedmark,Norway
Father: Lars Helgesen
Mother: Petronille Jensdr

And another long shot for ba;ptism. This would need for the marriage certificate to have been filled out quite incorrectly.

Name: Maria Larsen
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 1 mar 1856
Baptism Date: 15 jun 1856
Baptism Place: Loten,Hedmark,Norway
Father: Lars Olsen
Mother: Berthe Hendriksdr
FHL Film Number: 124294

This might be the same person with her mother and step-father in the 1865 Census.

1865 Census

Also see number 24

If this record is the same as the one posted above it gives a slightly different set of names for the parents of the bride. Looking at the original document, I think the name of the brides father is Lars and not Saro.

Not making much progress on finding a birth record for Mari Anne/Marianne Larsdatter. So perhaps we can make some progress if we post what we know about Axel Lie.

Probably him leaving Norway in 1881.

By 1892 he is found with his second wife Christine. First wife died in 1888 according to a Family Tree on Ancestry.com. Census shows two children, probably from his first wife. Annie and Liddie.

Looking at a Family Tree for Axel Lie, it lists his father as Andreas Nielsen and his mother as
Anne Marie Johannesdatter

The Family Tree indicates that this person is a sibling to Axel.

Johan Markus Andersen in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Johan Markus Andersen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 11 jul 1862
Baptism Date: 7 sep 1862
Baptism Place: , Strommen, Vestfold, Norway
Father: Andreas Nilsen Lie
Mother: Anne Marie Johansen
FHL Film Number: 127644

And this would be the family in the 1865 Census.

http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0701&kenr=000&bnr=0176&lnr=00

Perhaps the names of the parents in the Marriage records are not completely accurate. Maybe we need to ignore the marriage record for a little while and see what we can find.

Ignoring the parents names for Mari Larsdatter born between 1853 to 1856 brings up this family in the 1865 Census.

1865 Census

Birth year and location match up fairly well with the Mariane Larsdatter found by Jan Peter

quote:
Mariane Lars. (25) left Oslo on 15 Aug 1881, and listed residence was Løiten, Hedmark.

Here are some of the records for her immigration

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/gen/vis/8/pe00000000955787

http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=12&filnamn=emikra1&gardpostnr=39663&merk=39663#ovre

And as posted earlier her arrival.

Name: Mariane Larsen
Arrival Date: 3 Aug 1881
Birth Date: abt 1856
Age: 25
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Norwegian
Place of Origin: Norway
Port of Departure: Copenhagen, Denmark and Norway
Destination: United States of America
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Thingvalla
