Here is a quote from a timeline on the "hunter" family tree on Ancestry.com

7 Nov 1897 Residence
83 Orwell Street, Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England
From wedding certificate - shown aged 28

The wedding certificate is not posted - but seems to be in the possession of this tree creator.

In the 1927 wedding certificate posted by jwiborg for Violet, the father Louis Martin Lawson has occupation of lumper - same as 1911 census. This is someone who loads and unloads cargo, presumably, and possibly the work is taking place on the docks. So if some record calls Louis a "fisherman," that's another record from the UK still yet missing from the thread.

If he was occupied as a sailor he may be one of these:

In his first post Dave Hunter stated.

quote:
The reason I think it was him that my auntie found him on the ship "BURTON" on the 1881 census is because he had his name down as Louis Lawson, but born in Horten Norway in 1859, age 22 years

This is likely the person the Aunt found,

All 1881 England Census Results
Name: L. Lawson
Age: 22
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1859
Gender: Male
Where born: Harten, Norway
Civil Parish: Vessels
County/Island: Lincolnshire
Country: England
Street address: "Burton"
Education:

Employment status:

View image
Occupation: Fisherman
Registration district: Caistor
Sub registration district: Great Grimsby
ED, institution, or vessel: Burton

I have left off the rest of the list of men, they seem to belong to many boats. The boat with L Lawson on board has a crew of five, four English and one L. Lawson from Norway. The location of the ship is intriguing "Great Grimsby"

The original manifest lists hiim as single, originally a deckhand crossed out and changed to fisherman.

This is the reply from My Aunt in Australia re the above documents-

Yes, Aunty Violet was one of my mothers sisters and I remember her and Uncle Charlie. If she was born in 1904 she would be older than 19 when she married in 1927 though ???
They had maybe 5 - 6 children. The youngest two were more my age and I was friends with one of them Valerie. The other was called Charlie and he died quite young, late teens, early 20's.
An older sister was called Irene. my grandmother went to live with them in Nunsthorpe when the houses in Orwell Street were all pulled down, she was going to live with us but that was then my mother died.

Regarding Violet Isabel Lawson:
  • The marriage certificate from 1927 says she is 19 years old, ie. born ab. 1908.
  • Census-1911 says she is 3 years old, ie. born ab 1908.
  • The birth certificate I provided says she is born 03 Dec 1904.
I strongly believe this little girl born 03 Dec 1904 died, and they got a new girl named Violet Isabel in 1908.
This looks to be her.
Violet Isabel Larsen
Christening: 21 Feb 1908, Clee, Lincoln, England
Parents: Lewis Larsen & Florence Larsen
The Violet who married Charles William Neller was born born 07 Feb 1908 and died 16 Aug 1977.

To recap; I think we should look for Laurits Martin Larsen, born 17 Apr 1872 in Christiania, Norway.
I think "Christiania" (Oslo) is this context could include the neighboring areas, especially westbound towards Drammen, Buskerud and Horten, Vestfold.

Searching the Ancestry.com data base, "All Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927" born 1872 plus/minus 2.

There are no Laurits Martin Larsens for Oslo.

For Buskerud there are three, and they all seem to use Martin as the first name followed by Lauritz. None of them from Drammen.

For 17 Apr 1872 there are none in all of Norway. For April, 1872 we have one in Buskerud.

ame: Martin Laurits Larsen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 3 apr 1872
Baptism Date: 9 jun 1872
Baptism Place: Tyristrand, Buskerud, Norway
Father: Ole Larsen
Mother: Pauline Nilsd

For Vestfold there are four and none of them in Horten.

Now I assume that this data base is not complete but it does cover over 21 million baptisms.

Although I would not rule out 1869 either since most of the census data give 1869 as his birth year.

I do like the direction of Horten, Drammen and Christiania.
