You might also consider Ancestry.com. Because today is Memorial Day they have a free search military records for at least today.

Here is one record from Ancestry.com. They have 22 Military Recods on him. Although there appears to be at least one record on someone else also name Sam Bondhus. , wrong birth date. This is the earliest I could find.

BIRTH: abt 1867 - Norway
MILITARY: 12 Jun 1893

Sam T Bondhus in the U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914
Name: Sam T Bondhus
Birthyear: abt 1867
Birthplace: Norway
Enlistment Age: 26 5/12

If you are able to use the Ancestry.com site free today you can look at a lot of military records for him, and look at the original documents.

Bondhus is a farm in Ĉnes subparish in Kvinnherad

Sam is most likley an abbreviation for Samson or Salomond, common names in this area.
