I am updating family history and would like some help on this family - Per Hallvardson Hovland (b. 1791, d. 1837) and Gunnhild Eiriksdtr Hovland (b. 1792, d. 1845). Did the following remain in Norway or emigrate to the USA - Torleiv, b. 1820; Sigrid, b. 1822; Hans, b. 1825; Anna, b. 1827; Marta, b. 1832; Gunhild, b. 1834 and Peder, b. 1836? I know Knut b. 1824 came to USA but where did he settle? Ole, Erik and Gjertrud all settled in Brush Creek Township, Faribault Co., Minnesota. Also I have some info that Per died in a tragic accident in 1837. Is there any record of "how" he died? I appreciate any help you can give me! |

According to that same tree Knut married Johanna Olsdatter Natvik in 1853.
Knud Pedersen in the Norway, Select Marriages, 1660-1926 Name: Knud Pedersen Gender: Male Marriage Date: 1 mai 1853 (1 May 1853) Marriage Place: Laerdal,Sogn Og Fjordane,Norway Spouse: Johanna Olsdr FHL Film Number: 126470

Knut and Johanna and children (see numbers 128b to 132) left Bergen Norway in April 27, 1855 for New York on the Bark Kong Sverre, arriving July 4. Actually according to the Ancestry.com record it was July 5.
http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_list.asp?jo=1106
Here is the arrival record for son Ole age 4.
Ole Knudsen in the New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 Name: Ole Knudsen Arrival Date: 5 Jul 1855 Birth Date: abt 1851 Age: 4 Gender: Male Ethnicity/ Nationality: Norwegian Place of Origin: Norway Port of Departure: Bergen, Norway Destination: United States of America Port of Arrival: New York, New York Ship Name: Kong Sverre
The rest of the family are there and can be seen in the original record , however transcription makes them difficult to find. For example, this is my best guess as to how Knut Pedesen Hovland was transcribed.
Name: Karis Frederick Howland Arrival Date: 5 Jul 1855 Birth Date: abt 1825 Age: 30 Gender: Male Ethnicity/ Nationality: Norwegian Place of Origin: Norway Port of Departure: Bergen, Norway Destination: United States of America Port of Arrival: New York, New York Ship Name: Kong Sverre

Probably the same family in 1870 Census.

Interesting! About Knut - It has to be he and his family on the bark Kong Sverre but I feel he is #128b as Knud Pederson Howland, I don't know who 129 is, Knut's wife Johanna Olsdtr Howland is 130 and their 2 children are #131 and 132. I don't think that is the right family in Illinois. I feel that they must have come to the Minnesota area, perhaps Wisconsin as this is where others had settled. Any info on Marta, Gunnhild and Peder? Thank you for your help! |

You are probably correct about the famly in Illinois, About the bark Kong Sverre ships register, the original document on Ancestry.com probably sheds some light on that. It shows a 128 as Nels Trytten just as the Norway Heritage ships passenger list does, then a name at 129 crossed out and impossible to read but age 19 and written over that and difficult to read is Knud Pedersen Howland age 30. Under him at 130 is Johanna Peder age 25, under her at 131 is Ole Knudsen age 4 and under him at 132 is Peder do (ie same as above) age 9 months. |

Here is an interesting candidate in the 1870 Census. Ole and Peter birth years are a little close together.
Knud Peterson in the 1870 United States Federal Census Name: Knud Peterson Age in 1870: 46 Birth Year: abt 1824 Birthplace: Norway Home in 1870: Madison, Winneshiek, Iowa Race: White Gender: Male Post Office: Ridgeway Value of real estate: View image Household Members: Name Age Knud Peterson 46 Johana Peterson 39 Ole Peterson 17 Peter Peterson 16

Some of the Family Trees have Sigrid marrying a Johannes Rasmussen in 1842. That may not be correct, here is a Sigrid Pedersdatter marrying a Johannes Jensen in 1842. That may be the correct marriage. The father of Johannes Jensen is Jens Rasmussen, that may be where the confusion starts.
Sigrid Pedersdr in the Norway, Select Marriages, 1660-1926 Name: Sigrid Pedersdr Gender: Female Marriage Date: 22 mai 1842 (22 May 1842) Marriage Place: Laerdal,Sogn Og Fjordane,Norway Spouse: Johannes Jensen FHL Film Number: 126470

I notice in most of the Family Trees the parents of Per Hallovorsen born 1791 are left unnamed, and in a few cases the mother is listed as Sigrid Salamonsdatter. I wonder if this is not the family or at least the mother and child in the 1801 Norwegain Census. The mother is listed as unmarried And two below her is Peder Halversen born 1891. The location looks appealing.

A possible candidate for Peder baptism and parents.
Peder Halvorsen in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927 Name: Peder Halvorsen Gender: Male Baptism Date: 2 nov 1791 Baptism Place: , Luster, Sogn Og Fjordane, Norway Father: Halver Christensen Mother: Siri Salamonsdr FHL Film Number: 126462

I think that would be the right Per Halvorson. I find in the Ardal database that his father is listed as Halvor Kristenson Fjosne, 1747-1797, and his mother as Sigrid Salomonsdotter Stein, 28.08.1757 - 1836. It also states that they were not married. In the 1801 census, is that several families living on the same farm as there are so many names listed under the Domocile. |
