OLFEN / SVENDSEN Family Bible found. Goshen , New York, USA.
Inside the front cover it says:" Audrens(Andrens) Olfen ~1881"
I believe it also says: Pastor T.N. Bruun (Bruin)
The back cover says: Sverre Svendsen, Borghild Svendsen - 1890-1901.
Lilly Svendsen - no date.
It also includes a letter. Many more names, I cannot make out. Pages are highlighted- in pencil- words written in margins.
I'd LOVE to return this to the family. There is also a letter, I cannot read.

This is a Hardcover, Leatherbound Bible. I haven't got a clue what language this is. The script is very ornate -Google translate= either Danish or Norwegian. Inside page reads: Leftamente, Chriftiania. Vaa Det Brittiffe og Udenlandffe Bibelfelfefabs Befoftning, Grendahl & Son. 1875. That's all I have.
If the family is still in N.Y., I am too! |

The name is Olsen, not Olfen. The way they wrote the letter "s" looks like an "f."

Perhaps the front of Bible name is Bible owner, or first owner.
Could it say "Andreas Olsen - 1881"?
Was this person born 1881? or was the Bible purchased/ pesented in 1881?
Seems like a well studied Bible. Used by owner (Andreas???) for confirmation?
In the back, could this be births of three children in a family,
Sverre Svendsen b 1890
Borghild Svendsen b 1901
Lilly Svendsen b --?--
Grøndahl & Søns was a Norwegian publishing firm - could that be the publisher?

Goshen New York is in Orange county along the border with New Jersey and fairly close to New York City.
When do people get Bibles?
I got mine when I was confirmed. The pastor signed it and my name and the date I was confirmed was also inscribed. So think of Andreas Olsen confirmed 1881 means that he would roughly have been born about 1866.
Does the letter have an envelope with a postmark or is the letter dated? |

The Sverre Svendsen and wife Borghild lived in Oneida County in 1925 New York Census. However Oneida is in far upstate New York. But they probaby lived in Brooklyn in the 1930 Census.

eibache, can you confirm the language is Norwegian not Danish? Can you shed any light on the publication info - does it state the Bible is published for foreign distribution? "Udenlandske"
jreale, if you want to or are able to take the search to the next level, consider scanning the letter and uploading the scan to the free website "tinypics." That website offers a URL that is suitable for forums. When the URL is copied and pasted to this thread, an image of the letter will appear here. When scanning the letter, set to a low resolution setting so that the digital size is appropriate for the web, to keep the letter from appearing overwhelmingly large.
Meanwhile a question was asked about the letter - is it dated, is there an envelope or postmark or address. Any further description of the letter and/or its contents might help. |
